Angra Dos Reis is not just about Ilha Grande... there are so many other islands to visit and things to do. You really need to come here to fully understand. We hopped islands and swam with turtles.
In this video we take the cheaper option of staying on the mainland instead of the popular backpacker destination: Illha Grande. As it was not long after carnival, the island was fairly booked up and prices hiked.. We opted for Angra Dos Reis mainland, near Bonfim, in a place we had never heard of and had no idea what to expect.
Our hostel owner spoke no English so Google Translate was our new best friend. We had an amazing decking area and breakfast overlooking the bay, as turtles ever morning. This was the ONLY place we saw them in the wild in Brazil. I was lucky enough to get in and have a little swim with them.
Gemma wasn't so lucky, getting bit by a dog... but it was okay... more on that in the video. We also won at life when we went island hopping and managed to get a private boat all day long. Schools or fish, tiny islands and beautiful sun. Angra took us by surprise.
We are so new to vlog travel, having just provided highlights set to music before (see the SE Asia series). SO this adventure is filmed and edited on the road, in hostels, on the ground with THE most slow WIFI. Having to travel and edit is going to be challenging. We would love for you to follow us in the journey and hope the videos provide good information if you are planning to travel to the area or just interested. If it helps just one of you, then thats amazing!

Spent a few weeks in Brazil on the coast in Ubatuba. Visited the Portuguese colonial town of Paraty. Ended up on a boat in Angra dos Reis visiting Ilha Grande and other islands in the region. Had a delicious Brazilian churrasco on the water, eating picanha steak. This is must go place for a solo traveler to experience the Brazil life.

Come along with me as I go island hopping around Ilha Grande, Brazil! This place is a true paradise on Earth.
I'm fortunate enough to have been to hundreds of beaches around the world, but I can easily see why they say that Lopes Mendes beach is considered to be among the top 10 best beaches in the world.
The main town on Ilha Grande is called Vila do Abraão, which was easy to walk around and explore. Plus it has a lovely beach of its own. But, with 365 surrounding islands, a day of island hopping seemed inevitable!

you can buy your ticket at the CostaVerde counter - check the timetable here
We bought it to Concecao de Jacarei
To make your way to Paraty - we took the ferry to a mainland port town called Angra dos Reís
and from the port we made our way to the bus stop (just turn right and keep going) , NOT the bus station and here we waited to board a public bus to Paraty.
To get to Iguazu fall you need to fly to Foz do Iguaçu from Brazil.
If you are making your way from Argentina, you need to fly to Puerto Iguazu.

Boat trip around Angra dos Reis and Ilha Grande | Trip to Rio de Janeiro, Brazil 2020
Angra dos Reis, Portuguese for cove or bay of the Kings, is a Brazilian municipality located in the southern part of Rio de Janeiro state. Angra is located at an altitude of 6 meters and includes in its territory many offshore islands, the largest being the Ilha Grande.
Ilha Grande, Portuguese for Big Island, is an island located off the coast of Rio de Janeiro state, Brazil. The island, which is part of the municipality of Angra dos Reis, remains largely undeveloped. For almost a century it was closed by the Brazilian government to free movement or settlement because it first housed a leper colony and then a top-security prison. Cândido Mendes high-security prison housed some of the most dangerous prisoners within the Brazilian penal system. It was closed in 1994. The largest village on the island is called Vila do Abraão with approximately 1900 inhabitants.
Small-scale ecotourism is being encouraged on the island. Although it has no roads and motorised vehicles banned, the island has more than 150 km (93 mi) of hiking trails connecting all the coastal villages and hamlets. Lodgings have been made available near many of island's 100 unspoilt beaches. One of the most popular activities for visitors is to trek to Lopes Mendes beach, about a two-hour hike from Abraao. Travel companies are now offering sight-seeing trips to see the island's various beaches, mountains trails and waterfalls.
Most of the visitor facilities and the park headquarters are located at Vila do Abraão. The village may be reached from the mainland by local ferries and fast catamarans. On January 1, 2010 devastating mudslides killed at least 19 people on the island.
Tourism has also discovered Angra dos Reis in the meantime. The city is a popular destination for the inhabitants of Rio de Janeiro because it is surrounded by over 300 islands with paradisiacal beaches. Ilha Grande takes a special position here, it is the largest of the islands, lonely beaches and winding mysterious paths attract adventurers, and sometimes there is an involuntary stay: there is a prison on the island.

Among all of its islands, Ilha Grande stands out. Considered the paradise of adventurers, with its trails, waterfalls and deserted beaches, it played an important role in Brazil’s historical-cultural scenario for having housed a prison for almost 60 years.
In the past, Angra dos Reis was one of the most important ports of the Fluminense coast. Ships loaded with goods docked there from the other side of the world. Slave ships also arrived there with hundreds of slaves to supply forced labor in the coffee plantations of the region.
Ilha Grande (Great Island), the biggest island in the region, is one of the most sought out places for diving in Brazil. Shipwrecks, coral reefs and an exuberant marine fauna are part of the itinerary for those looking forward to diving into the blue-green waters. Ilha Grande is so beautiful that it has been elected one of the 7 wonders of Rio de Janeiro, in 2007.
The Island also offers places for adrenaline junkies, such as trekking, canoeing and wild paths for people who like to discover the diversity of their beaches. Angra's East end also has the infrastructure of hotels and restaurants, besides historical buildings, such as the Holy Trinity church, the monument to Aquidaba at Jacuecanga's bay, and Leme's Fort.
The Marco da Cidade (City Mark), the Colegio Naval (Navy School), the Ermida do Senhor do Bonfim (Lord of Bonfim Hermitage) and the Igreja de Nossa Senhora dos Remédios (Our Lady of Remedies Church) are all at the estrada do contorno (contour road).
Take the chance to get to know Paraty's - a nearby city - beautiful beaches, colonial mansions, exuberant fauna and flora. Heading south, there are great resorts to relax and rapids to enjoy diving and adventure tourism. Besides, there are the tourist sites such as the Vila Historica de Mambucada (Historic Village of Mambucada), the ruins of the Engenho Central do Bracui (Bracui Central Mill) and the Complexo Nuclear (Nuclear Complex).
Looking for accommodation online in Angra can be confusing, since the beach resorts and the downtown hotels can be hard to tell apart. If you just need somewhere to sleep before going to Ilha Grande the next day, don't book an expensive resort far from the port. The majority of accommodation options are on the Contorno road north of town. They range from luxurious hotels to small cozy inns, and attractive prices. The cheapest options are in the center.
