Devils Pool Victoria Falls: Inches From Death!
The Devils Pool at Victoria Falls can be either very scary and exciting, or pretty calm and just neat to look at it. We got to experience it while literally inches from death as the water flow was at its peak in January and they were only one week from shutting down visits because of the risk factor becoming too great.
Once the pool is closed, tourists are forced to visit the much calmer Angels Pool, and we had this option as well on our excursion.
With the flow being so high, they also insisted that everyone confirm they are a strong swimmer. Of course all 9 of our group said, Yes, I can swim but once we were shown the course that we would tread, 3 in the group suddenly decided that they were not strong swimmers.
It might seem expensive at about $100, but we think it is money well spent. You'll definitely get your heart racing and your adrenaline pumping...something we think everyone should do every now and then!
FYI: We recorded this with our GoPro Fusion, a 360 camera that we really enjoy because we don't have to worry about where we are pointing the camera, we just hit record.

DEVIL'S POOL at Victoria Falls, Africa: Not for the feint of heart!!
While Victoria Falls is neither the highest nor the widest waterfall in the world, it's classified as the largest, due to its combined width of 1,708 meters (5,604 ft) and height of 108 meters (354 ft). The Victoria Falls are roughly twice the height of North America's Niagara Falls and well over twice its width. While Africans knew of the falls for centuries, David Livingstone, the Scottish missionary and explorer, was recorded as the first European to have viewed the falls on November 16, 1855, from what is now known as Livingstone Island. The Zambezi River below marks the border between Zambia and Zimbabwe.
My friend Gabriel and I traveled for 10 weeks in southern Africa, seeing so many beautiful places and meeting wonderful people. Devil's Pool was definitely one of the more memorable (and expensive) things we did. For backpackers, the price tag of $110 (I think it was only $90 or $100 when we were there in 2017) was a splurge, but I'm so glad we did it. It seems super scary, but mostly it felt safe...as long as you didn't think about it too much.
The lunch or dinner tours are more expensive, so we didn't do that. Plus, I think you have a better chance of seeing rainbows in the morning, but we weren't lucky. The guides are great. Very experienced and super nice and helpful. I was 60 years old when I did it, but I think there were older and heavier people there too. You can either swim across or walk. It's not too deep and in October or November the current isn't too strong.
What I did chicken out on was the bungee jump from the bridge that connects Zambia and neighboring Zimbabwe. Unfortunately, I had seen the video of the time the bungee broke and an Australian woman barely survived the fall to the rocks and the crocodiles in the Zambezi. I'm pretty sure I would have done it otherwise. I watched a ton of tourists do it, and it seemed like they enjoyed it. But I just couldn't get the nerve.
We did do class 4 white water rafting on the Zambezi, which was also thrilling.
