I Stayed with a Nomadic Family in the Sahara (Mauritania)

→ Join me for daily adventures on Instagram:

The nomadic people of Mauritania live in one of the harshest environments on earth: the Sahara desert. It's an extremely wild and rugged place, and although their lives are very hard, our guide Abdou is in love with the poetry of the nomads in how they live their lives. He decided to take me and @fearlessandfar on an incredible journey to meet with one nomadic family that has lived in the desert for generations.

Thank you to the best guide - Abdou - from the tiny Auberge Zarga in Chinguetti, Mauritania, for taking us out to the desert to meet Soliman and his family, in January 2020 (yes, this vlog is a little overdue ????)

I STAYED WITH A BEDOUIN FAMILY IN THE DESERT IN OMAN | ايفا زوبيك

☆ INSTAGRAM:

Welcome to Oman! What an incredible country and destination in the Middle East. In my first video in the Oman series, I show you what it's like to live with a bedouin family in the desert.

At the beginning of my Oman trip, I stayed with a real bedouin family, in their desert compound in the Wahiba Sands. I followed them around as they went about their day, tried to help out and filmed bits of their lives to show you just how difficult they have it - and how they manage their day-to-day in one of the harshest environments on the planet.

Berber Tents and Looms from the Sahara Desert

We have a great little book giving much more information. It can be sent around the world and purchased directly here: Special offer if you buy more than one!

Two different types of tent, the 'Persian' tent, a simple drape of a large sheet of cloth, and the 'Arabic' tent, more sophisticated with bands of densely woven wool to hold the fabric taught. This allowed larger tents to be made with far less wood in the poles, relying for its strength on a pair of centre poles whose angles can be adjusted to raise and lower the height of the tent.

We also look at two looms, the horizontal loom, laid out on the floor of the desert and painstakingly slow to weave on. It takes around six months to weave enough fabric to make a tent, and the vertical loom. This is not a 'backstrap' loom and every line has to be picked apart by hand.

Eating with NOMADS in the SAHARA DESERT ???????? Medfouna (Berber Pizza) in Morocco!!

???????? We travelled to Morocco with Moroccan Food Tour - They have amazing food tours and cooking classes across Morocco (Marrakech, Rabat, Casablanca, Fes and MORE). Go check them out :

We’re in the Moroccan Sahara, far from the lush green forests and vibrant Atlantic coastline that we saw in previous episodes. The Sahara Desert stretches over one third of the African continent, spanning the borders of 11 countries. Being the largest “hot desert” in the world, the scorching heat, arid landscapes and sparse vegetation make it a challenging place for humans to inhabit; yet it is home to two million people, most of which are nomadic. In this video, we want to highlight what life is like for these Amazigh nomadic people living in the Moroccan Sahara.

Step back in time with us at a local souk (Marché Central Rissani), where nomads bring their products from surrounding villages by donkey. We will be stopping by a street food stall that makes the most DELICIOUS Medfouna (Berber Pizza). We ordered beef and also a vegetarian Medfouna. We will show the full preparation of this stuffed Moroccan pizza, and enjoy it with Moroccan Mint Tea. We will also visit a camel farm that produces fresh camel milk, and try it straight from the camel!!!

We will then take you DEEP into the desert, where we will be taking an adrenaline pumping ATV ride across the golden dunes. Then, a visit to a nomadic family to learn about how they live in such harsh conditions, their day-to-day challenges, and what their future will look like. The matriarch of the family kindly welcomed us and we enjoyed a bowl of couscous and tea under a camel-skin tent. Couscous is the staple dish for Amazigh nomads, as the couscous is easy to make and transport.

We will then hop on camels to see the dunes from a different perspective, while watching the sunset over the town of Merzouga. This was a spectacular experience for us and we hope you’ll enjoy this episode from Morocco!

If you want to experience Morocco like we did, make sure to visit with Moroccan Food Tour. This is our second tour across Morocco with them, and we HIGHLY recommend their tours & service: or follow them @MoroccanFoodTour on Instagram and Facebook.

Living 24 Hours with a Berbers Tribe (North Africa)

The Berbers are nomads, wandering through the dunes of the Sahara, all over North Africa. Common in Morocco, these nomadic people have a unique way of life. I join Eva Zubeck and we join a berber family for 24 hours.

This is my first encounter with Berbers, and I learned a lot... like how a goatskin is a great place to keep milk cool, and you can cook bread in sand. Yum, crunchy.

This is the second video in the Mauritania series. Let me know what was the most ineresting moment about our stay with the Berbers of North Africa, and make sure to watch the first episode. Iron Ore train Hopping!

MEETING THE NOMAD FAMILY IN SAHARA

We drove to what seemed like a very remote area in Sahara to visit the Nomads. This vast area in the desert has only two families living in a house made of clay. It was amazing to see how they live their lives in the desert. They looked happy. Made us think how peaceful their lives are, away from all the chaos in the city.

INCREDIBLE 24 Hours in the Sahara Desert - Merzouga, Morocco

We just made it into the Sahara Desert in Morocco! In our last episode, we left Fez and drove for 9 hours to Merzouga. The drive was actually a lot of fun because we got to see so much of the diverse Moroccan countryside. We made it to our camp just in time for an incredible sunset! In this episode, we are learning about the nomadic way of life, dancing in the desert, and ending the day riding camels through the Sahara.

7 Days Living with the NOMADS OF IRAN

→ Join me for daily adventures on Instagram:
→ Huge thank you to IRANomad Tours, who invited me on this adventure. Check out their work in responsible tourism here:

I find it funny when I hear people calling me a digital nomad. My privileged way of life, where I get to work on my computer from anywhere in the world, is nothing like the lifestyles of truly nomadic people. And there's fewer and fewer of them left in the world.

On this adventure, I joined IRANomad Tours and a family of Bakhtiari nomads in Iran - some of the very last nomads in the world - as they crossed the Zagros Mountains. Together with their giant flock of sheep and goats, and other families from their tribe, we trekked over the mountains for a week, towards their summer pasture. It turned out to be one of the most adventurous and life-changing journeys I've taken so far.

San Bushmen of the Kalahari Desert - A House That Could be Built Without Metal Tools

What is the first house? Where and when did people start to build? Were caves our first shelter...or nests?

In the centre of the Kalahari Desert in Botswana a few San hunter-gathering bushmen still live a fairly traditional way of life. While this may be thought of as primitive technology, this is actually a sophisticated house, ecological and organic in its design and perfectly adapted to the climate and culture of the bushmen. An egalitarian society in which men and women work and share equally the huts are arranged around a central hearth around which the family mostly sleep, but we learn that not only are the huts for living in, but a young bushman girl when she comes of age will be kept inside the hut for three whole weeks to teach her that she must not play with the boys. An old bushman lady tells us the story.

Is this the oldest house in the world? The huts are only a few months old, but the design may go back four million years? How can this be possible? A few thoughts about where architecture all began.

Thank you so much to the wonderful open-hearted and wise-beyond-words San bushmen for sharing their skills with me.

Merzouga is a small town located in the Sahara Desert in the south of Morocco. In this video, we will show you our 3-day safari experience so you know what to expect from a camel trek. A Day in the Life of a Tibetan Nomad Family; How do Tibetan Wife and Husband Divide Their House Work

Hidden between snow mountains, there is a tent house of a nomadic family in the valley.

It was a day that I spent with the family, showing you how Tibetan nomads keep their traditional life when the world is modernizing all around them.

The day started with a simple breakfast. The handmade yak butter tea provides them with their daily energy needs.

After breakfast, the male nomad went out to graze yaks. The job seemed easy, but it was a long and boring time in the empty valley.

How did the man kill time during the long hours of grazing?

He carried snuff with him so he could relax during breaks. Sometimes, he played a solo game, such as throwing a stone. Just like a kid in the valley, he amused himself by finding natural toys from nature.

On the other side, the yaks were leisurely enjoying a fresh grass banquet.

The yak is very important to Tibetan nomads, not only does it provide them with milk to make their daily butter tea and yak cheese, but it is also the source of income. The yak’s fur is also the raw material for their tent house.

While the male nomad and yaks were away from home, the female nomad worked hard at home as well, like collecting yak dung for fuel, drying nettles as winter food for yaks and horses, looking after the elder and kids at home, and making lunches and dinners for the family.

This is a chance to see how the different roles that the male and the female nomads play in their family life, and see how modern Tibetan nomads still maintain the lifestyle of their ancestors after hundreds of years, living in harmony with nature in the land.

Growing up in Arizona, I've always been fascinated by the desert. That's why I am particularly interested in the BEDOUIN TRIBE of North Africa and the Middle East. Believe it or not, there are over 8 million bedouins (nomadic Arabs) living across 21 desert nations.

Over the years, I have had some incredible experiences with bedouins in countries like Yemen, Oman, Sudan, Algeria, Mauritania, and Jordan — and today, I finally got around to telling you the story of the Bedouins while here in the Sinai peninsula of Egypt.

All I have to say is that bedouins are some of the most open and hospitable people on earth -- they will force-feed you and serve you copious amounts of hot sugary tea. I really admire their lifestyles and I'm excited to share this story with you.
