I STAYED WITH A BEDOUIN FAMILY IN THE DESERT IN OMAN | ايفا زوبيك

☆ INSTAGRAM:

Welcome to Oman! What an incredible country and destination in the Middle East. In my first video in the Oman series, I show you what it's like to live with a bedouin family in the desert.

At the beginning of my Oman trip, I stayed with a real bedouin family, in their desert compound in the Wahiba Sands. I followed them around as they went about their day, tried to help out and filmed bits of their lives to show you just how difficult they have it - and how they manage their day-to-day in one of the harshest environments on the planet.

Growing up in Arizona, I've always been fascinated by the desert. That's why I am particularly interested in the BEDOUIN TRIBE of North Africa and the Middle East. Believe it or not, there are over 8 million bedouins (nomadic Arabs) living across 21 desert nations.

Over the years, I have had some incredible experiences with bedouins in countries like Yemen, Oman, Sudan, Algeria, Mauritania, and Jordan — and today, I finally got around to telling you the story of the Bedouins while here in the Sinai peninsula of Egypt.

All I have to say is that bedouins are some of the most open and hospitable people on earth -- they will force-feed you and serve you copious amounts of hot sugary tea. I really admire their lifestyles and I'm excited to share this story with you.

→ Viral video about Stephanie on @GlobstoryPl's channel:

Yayai is part of the Maasai tribe, one of the largest and best-known African tribes. One of the Maasai traditions that continues to live to this day is the custom of polygamy (or, more specifically, polygyny). As someone with a European upbringing, I've always been taught that a successful relationship can only exist between two people... But that's not how everyone around the world lives and thrives.

I've decided to ask Yayai about what marriage is like in her Maasai culture, and she really opened my eyes to the fact that there is no single recipe for a good relationship (except, maybe, to respect your partner!). I'm hoping you've also come here with an open mind and without judgment - because even if you may not agree with someone's way of life, you should always find a way to respect it (if they're not doing anything to harm you).

I also know that there's a lot that I will never find out about, and of course many other socio-political issues at stake here. But it is not the purpose of this video to discuss them at length: this video is merely a small dip into the idea of polygamy in Maasai marriage, and that's the scope of it.

Secret Cave with Human Bones on a Desert Island

It's day 4 of my desert island quarantine, and we went for a little mountain hike to find a cave that we've heard is filled with human bones and skulls... What we found was truly jaw-dropping!

Yikes. What do you think happened there? How did this place come about? Leave a comment and give us some food for thought - and imagination ????

Please note: I arrived on the island a few days before COVID-19 travel bans kicked in around the world. Given the choice between leaving and travelling across several international airports, potentially catching something on the way, vs. staying, healthy, I decided to stay. The vlogs were filmed a few days ago, and it's now been over two weeks since my arrival.

Living with Family in Mongolia (CAMEL HERDERS)

I got an invitation to visit a camel herder's home in the Gobi Desert: of course I went! Big shout out to Sixt Mongolia for setting me up with this tiny but mighty car that carried me from Ulaanbaatar to... well, the steppe, the desert, remote towns, and various other amazing places ????

Note: This video was filmed last summer, in 2019 - pre-COVID times!

Inside a Remote Village (One Family Lives Here)

Day 6 of my desert island life. We've made it to the tiny village on the beach, where our host and friend Abdullah lives. There's only one family here scattered across a few small houses, and we're blessed to be staying here.

The Bedul Bedouins of Petra | FULL DOCUMENTARY

In the early 80's, Jordan and Unesco expelled the humble people of the B'doul tribe from the ancient city of Petra to declare it as a world heritage site.

While hundreds of thousands of tourists from all over the world flock to the site, the local community seeks to rebuild their life on the tiny territory allocated for them.

This documentary film is a journey to the heart of the B'doul tribe of Petra. It is also an approach intended to be lucid about the inscription to the world heritage of one the most visited and sought-after destinations on earth.

Berber Tents and Looms from the Sahara Desert

We have a great little book giving much more information. It can be sent around the world and purchased directly here: Special offer if you buy more than one!

Two different types of tent, the 'Persian' tent, a simple drape of a large sheet of cloth, and the 'Arabic' tent, more sophisticated with bands of densely woven wool to hold the fabric taught. This allowed larger tents to be made with far less wood in the poles, relying for its strength on a pair of centre poles whose angles can be adjusted to raise and lower the height of the tent.

We also look at two looms, the horizontal loom, laid out on the floor of the desert and painstakingly slow to weave on. It takes around six months to weave enough fabric to make a tent, and the vertical loom. This is not a 'backstrap' loom and every line has to be picked apart by hand.

Living ALONE on Yemen's Remote Socotra Island

Socotra is hands-down one of the most epic places I've been to. On my recent trip to this Yemeni island with Welcome to Socotra, I spent an unforgettable 2 weeks camping, hiking, swimming and exploring.

In Socotra, on a remote beach, I met a modern-day Robinson Crusoe. This man lives alone, isolated from the rest of the world, and I want to tell you about his life.

Check my Instagram for daily updates on my adventures to not-so-popular tourist destinations:

Living with a Family in a Mountain Village (5 WEEKS)

I will never forget this family. The Kebanys welcomed me into their home for for well over a month (end of April until end of May), in my last weeks on Socotra Island. I got to stay with them in their mountain village, Shibhon, and get to know them, their traditions and customs, and daily life. A lot of the culture in Socotra revolves around nature *and* your community: neighbours, friends, family members. It blew me away.

This Is How Desert Nomads Live in Wadi Rum, Jordan ???????? هكذا يعيش البدو الصحراويون في وادي رم ، الأردن

As part of my Wadi Rum tour - I have requested my tour guide to take me to one of the Bedouin families who live in Wadi Rum. This family live during the winter in Wadi Rum and during summer they move to a different location since it can get really hot in the desert.

Overall interaction with the family and seeing how they really live has been very interesting and eye-opening. I hope you enjoy the tour as much as I did being there.

Living 24 Hours with a Berbers Tribe (North Africa)

The Berbers are nomads, wandering through the dunes of the Sahara, all over North Africa. Common in Morocco, these nomadic people have a unique way of life. I join Eva Zubeck and we join a berber family for 24 hours.

This is my first encounter with Berbers, and I learned a lot... like how a goatskin is a great place to keep milk cool, and you can cook bread in sand. Yum, crunchy.

This is the second video in the Mauritania series. Let me know what was the most ineresting moment about our stay with the Berbers of North Africa, and make sure to watch the first episode. Iron Ore train Hopping!

Eva zu Beck: What it's like to be a Tourist in Iraq | Baghdad and the Ancient City of Babylon

Iraq wouldn’t be most people’s first choice of destination. The country has been considered unstable for a long time now. The German foreign office warns people off visiting. Years of dictatorship, war and terrorism have left their mark. But this country between the Euphrates and Tigris rivers is also a cradle of civilization, where some of the earliest advanced cultures developed.
Travel vlogger @evazubeck explored ancient Babylon, once one of the most important cities of antiquity. Back in Bagdahd, she visited bazars and cafés, and immersed herself in the Iraqi capital’s nightlife. Watch her adventures!
Good to know: Since April 2021, travelers from 37 countries no longer have to apply for a visa in advance to enter Iraq. Instead, you can get one on entry. For a long time it wasn’t that simple. So Eva grabbed her chance at the end of 2021.
