Walt Disney World Resort parks close in anticipation of Hurricane Matthew. The Magic Kingdom closed by 5PM the day before the hurricane was set to make land fall. All parks were closed for Friday, October 7th, 2016.

HURRICANE At Walt Disney World! Hurricane Dorian Leaves The Magic Kingdom EMPTY!
As hurricane Dorian approaches the Florida coast, Walt Disney World prepares for the worst and decided to close all their parks early in anticipation of the storm. We walked into the Magic Kingdom an hour before park close and we were the very last ones inside the park! At 3pm the park was quickly evacuated of all guests and closed for the day due to the impending hurricane.

Walt Disney World officially closed as Hurricane Matthew hits Orlando
For all things Disney Parks, stick with
Correction: The first closure was on Sept. 15, 1999 for Hurricane Floyd. The next closure followed in September of 2004 for two days for Hurricane Frances. Right on the heels of Frances, Disney closed their doors again on September 26, 2004 for Hurricane Jeanne. And while not due to a hurricane, the park was evacuated on 9/11.
Hurricane Matthew is steadily approaching Central Florida as a Category Four with winds that may go beyond 145 mph when it hits the coasts. It’s no joke, and the attractions of Central Florida are taking the situation very seriously.
Walt Disney World is closing their theme parks, their water parks, their shopping district, their golf courses, and their sports complex on Thursday, October 6 at 5pm to encourage guests to stay indoors and be safe. All of these locations remained closed throughout Friday although operations are expected to resume on Saturday, October 8th. Additionally, their Halloween event, Mickey’s Not So Scary Halloween Party, was canceled for Thursday.
This is only the fourth time since opening day that Disney has closed its doors–three times in anticipation of hurricanes. The first was for two days in 1999 for Hurricane Jeanne, followed by closure on another day the same year for Hurricane Floyd. And while not due to a hurricane, the park was evacuated on 9/11.
For Hurricane Matthew, Disney already evacuated their Fort Wilderness campground earlier in the week, the bungalows on their Polynesian Village property and the Treehouse Villas at Saratoga Springs Resort. Those guests were moved to alternate accommodations by Disney as a safety measure.
Their Orlando properties are not the only ones that Disney closed. Disney’s Vero Beach Resort and their Hilton Head Island Resort in South Carolina also closed due to Hurricane Matthew.
It’s incredibly rare for the parks to close their doors to guests, but this speaks to the serious nature of the approaching storm. Some news outlets are reporting that when Hurricane Matthew hits the coasts, the damage will be of catastrophic proportions (possibly exceeding even that of Katrina and Sandy). The National Weather Service states that we should expect widespread outages and winds that exceed the hurricanes of 2004 that will launch debris capable of breaching structures. With this potentially being the worst storm Florida has seen in 118 years, these park closures are completely in line with what is in the best interests of their guests.
Walt Disney World Magic Kingdom Prepares to Close for Hurricane Matthew
On October 6th, 2016, the Magic Kingdom and all Walt Disney World theme parks closed early in preparation for Hurricane Matthew. For only the 4th time in its 45 year history, all 4 parks and the resort as a whole will be closed on October 7th.
In this video, you can see preparations for the storm underway as tarps are removed from construction zones, banners removed, and flags tied up all over the park.

See what some of the rain & wind from Hurricane Idalia looked like at Walt Disney World, filmed from the Presidential Suite balcony at Disney's Contemporary Resort. Thankfully the Disney/Orlando area didn't get hit bad at all, but we did get some heavy rain and wind at times. I attached literally every single clip that I filmed from the room. This was all filmed on August 30th 2023.

Hurricane Dorian at Walt Disney World Magic Kingdom & Epcot Orlando Florida 2019
In this video, I check out all of the preparations and adjustments being made at Walt Disney World for Hurricane Dorian! This was filmed in 4K UHD 60fps on September 3rd 2019. During this video, Hurricane Dorian was right outside Florida's east coast. The entire day was filled with heavy winds from the storm, but not much rain at all. Just last week, Hurricane Dorian was projected to go right through Orlando. Today, the storm arrived but stayed in the ocean away from us. The parks closed early just to be safe. The entire state of Florida is lucky that the storm stayed away from us! This storm was unpredictable but Disney still had to be safe and make preparations all over WDW to make sure everyone is safe if the storm did make landfall.
