There’s a few popular Christmas markets here in Budapest, and the biggest one to visit is at Vörösmarty tér. There’s loads of popular Hungarian food to taste at this market, but we wanted to try the beef goulash to warm us up on this chilly day. Not too far is the Advent Feast at the Basilica, another European Christmas market full of shopping, food, and mulled wine.

In terms of Christmas markets in Europe, the ones in Budapest are huge and beautiful to explore, lit up in the main squares of the city. The Christmas street food that you find at the markets is, however, catered to tourists quite a bit, so we headed to a local Christmas market in Budapest to see the differences.

Here at our last Christmas market, we tasted the ultimate Hungarian street food, lángos. Not just a Christmas street food, but one loved by locals all year round, this garlicky, sour cream and cheese covered fried dough of langos really did it for us and finished off our Christmas street food tour perfectly.

We hope you enjoyed checking out the Budapest Christmas market in Europe with us, tasting some local lángos and a beef goulash at the Vörösmarty tér Christmas Market. Exploring the Christmas markets here and tasting some of the Christmas street food in Budapest, Hungary was such a treat for us. Stay tuned for more street food adventures next week!

Street Food in Budapest, Hungary. Christmas Markets in Vörösmarty, Erzsébet Square & Fashion St

instagram: settime2588

Budapest's Christmas markets offer a festive experience for visitors of all ages. Vörösmarty Square, the most famous market, features over 100 wooden cabins selling traditional handmade arts and crafts. The square is adorned with fairy-tale lights and boasts a 12-meter tall Christmas tree. Indulge in regional Christmas treats such as goulash soup, hurka sausages, and Beigli strudel.
After exploring Vörösmarty Square, venture to Deák Ferenc Street, known as Fashion Street, for high-end shopping amid colorful lights and festive decorations. Another option is the Christmas Fair at St. Stephen’s Basilica, where an ice-skating rink surrounds a two-story Christmas tree, and stalls offer local crafts and goods. Capture the festive atmosphere after sunset with a 3D visual show on the Basilica.
For a more local experience, visit Óbuda's Christmas market on the Buda side, featuring an ice skating rink, a traditional carousel, and concerts. Enjoy traditional Hungarian dishes like töltött káposzta (stuffed cabbage) while browsing handicrafts.
Erzsébet Square’s Christmas market stands out for its diverse food offerings. Beneath the city's Ferris wheel, indulge in Hungarian specialties such as cooked sausages, lángos (cheesy flatbread), and kürtőskalác (caramelized brioche). Adults can savor palinka, Hungary’s national fruit brandy, while kids enjoy hot chocolate and szaloncukor, a festive Christmas chocolate.

BUDAPEST CHRISTMAS MARKET & Hungarian Food!

We made it to our 25th country of #Hungary where we try delicious Hungarian food and experience the BUDAPEST CHRISTMAS MARKET at night!

European Christmas markets are the primary reason we chose to travel Europe during Winter and they did not disappoint! The Budapest Christmas market was so much fun. We tried a delicious Hungarian street food called Lángos, which was so tasty. We also tried the Kürtőskalács, or Chimney Cake, which was so fun to eat!

The Budapest Christmas Markets truly surprised us with how big they were and how many fun Hungarian foods they had, not to mention the shops, live bands and activities. Definitely add Budapest, Hungary to your holiday travel list!

Don’t worry, Christmas markets were not all we did. There are so many things to do in Budapest, so before experiencing the Christmas markets we went on a walking tour of the Pest side and, of course, ate more food at the #Budapest Central Market Hall.

Hungarian Christmas Foods

HUNGARIAN CHRISTMAS FOODS - For vlogmas episode three, I visited the beautiful Budapest Christmas Market to look for special foods Hungarians eat at Christmastime. The market is full of delicious foods but I was in search of treats that are saved for this festive time of year.

I asked a friend of mine, who is from Budapest, the first thing she thought of when she pictured Hungarian Christmas and she said, without hesitation, bejgli. Bejgli is a rolled pastry with a flaky exterior and creamy filling. It’s traditionally made with poppy seed or walnut. I opted for the walnut variety. It tastes really fresh and I liked the contrast of the smooth centre with the crunchy walnuts. It definitely tasted like Christmas and I wasn’t surprised that it’s a seasonal favourite. Marc said it reminded him of pumpkin pie! Don’t miss trying this at the Budapest Christmas Market or anywhere else at this time of year in Hungary.

The next Christmas treat I tried is called mézeskalács. These are cookies which are very similar to traditional gingerbread and you may see signs in English that translate to as much. But they don’t taste exactly like the gingerbread I know from home. These are extremely lightweight and feel light as a feather in your hand. They have the same spicy ginger taste but don’t have the density and chewiness of normal gingerbread. They’re more airy and flaky and, I thought, had a more neutral flavour overall. They’re special at the holidays and are known for the intricate and detailed decorations which are painted on with icing. I almost felt a bit guilty eating it - not guilty enough to stop me though!

The third very traditional Hungarian Christmas food I hunted down is simply called ‘Christmas candy’ or 'parlour candy' or, in Hungarian, szaloncukor. They are wrapped candies that look so cherry and bright that they’re also used to decorate the Christmas tree. Edible decor is always a good idea! I tried three flavours: cherry, orange, and honey. They were all delicious but honey was my number one favourite.

I loved making this video and sharing all the traditional Hungarian Christmas foods with you guys. I hope you enjoyed it as well! I’d love to know what you’d most like to try if you were at the Budapest Christmas Market OR tell me your favourite Christmas food where you're from. Leave a comment and let me know!

BUDAPEST CHRISTMAS MARKET - TRADITIONAL HUNGARIAN FOOD - 4K - 2023

The Hungarian capital welcomes you from the end of November with many Christmas markets. This is the opportunity to discover a magical atmosphere, an architecture sublimated by the Christmas lights but also to discover some traditional Hungarian culinary specialties of these end-of-year celebrations.

A real popular icon of Hungarian cuisine, Lángos is a pancake-shaped donut cooked in oil. This fried bread is then covered with garlic, cream (or sour), cheese, ham or sausage. It must be served hot to appreciate its soft heart and crispy outline.
The Lángos is also prepared sweet, covered with jam or chocolate.

Goulash soup (‘Gulyasleves’) is one of the most famous dishes of Hungarian gastronomy. This soup is made of meat (usually beef), vegetables (peppers, tomatoes, ..), potatoes, onions and paprika.
This thick and tasty Goulash soup is accompanied by bread and can serve as a main dish. At a Christmas market in Budapest you can also taste the goulash soup served in a loaf of bread!
