【4K】Ferry ride and walking in Suomenlinna Fortress, Helsinki

Not a Vlog, just Finland without talking. Enjoy the walk.

Returning back to take another walk around Suomenlinna Fortress. Last time I made a video walk around the place was in spring 2018. Starting with a ferry ride from the market square to the fortress, then wandering around different areas this time around.

Had to stop the walk a little bit earlier than I had planned due to it getting a little bit too uncomfortable in the high heat. One of the hottest days here, temperature got as high as +31°C (87,8°F) later in the day.

Suomenlinna was built during the Swedish era as a maritime fortress and a base for the Archipelago Fleet. Work on the fortress began in 1748.

Thanks for walking with me, see you next time.

A Tour of SUOMENLINNA SEA FORTRESS in Helsinki Finland

SUOMENLINNA SEA FORTRESS travel vlog: I caught a ferry from Helsinki to Suomenlinna, a historic sea fortress built by the Swedes in the 18th century to protect against Russian expansionism.
???????? See more of my travel vlogs from Finland here →

Suomenlinna Sea Fortress is around 3 miles off the coast of Helsinki and accessed by regular ferries that depart and arrive at least every hour. The sea fortress is built across eight small islands and is listed as a UNESCO World Heritage site. I decided to make my visit a day trip from Helsinki and spend a few hours walking around the islands on a self guided tour.

Sadly this was my final day in Finland but I enjoyed the slow pace and relaxing nature of walking around Suomenlinna and taking in the pretty gardens, historic fortifications and charming views. Thanks for watching and I’ll see you in the next country!

Ferry ride to Suomenlinna Sea Fortress from Helsinki, Finland including touring around the island

On a lovely sunny afternoon we enjoyed a ferry ride from Helsinki, Finland to Suomenlinna visiting a Sea Fortress, wandering around the island and enjoying black licorice ice cream as part of our walking tour around the island. With a couple of days in Helsinki under our belt, we wanted to explore around some of the outer areas - including a trip a nearby island. Meeting up with Audrey's friend who is studying in Finland for the day, we ventured off to Suomenlinna, a historical maritime fortress and one of Finland's most popular sights. The brief ferry was as comfortable a ride I've ever been on before. With temperatures reaching the low 20's I felt a refreshing breeze against my face as the gentle rays of sun penetrate my skin.

The 15 minute ferry ride also afforded me an opportunity to photograph Helsinki from a different vantage point.

We felt extremely lucky to have delayed this trip considering we had planned this trip the day before when the weather was overcast and rainy.

Upon arriving this once virtually barren island was picturesque with its wild meadows, lush gardens and natural cliffs. In many ways this quaint little getaway reminded me of Prince Edward Island in Canada.

Given the many cozy cafes, restaurants, parks, fortifications and canons on this small island, it's no wonder Suoemenlinna attracting more than 700, 000 visitors annually!

Suomenlinna, a UNESCO Heritage site, (formerly known as Sveaborg in Swedish or Viapori in Finnish) is an inhabited sea fortress which is actually now considered a part of Helsinki. Popular with both foreigners and tourists alike, its the perfect destination for a lazy afternoon picnic, bite of ice cream or a picturesque destination for a wedding.

Literally, 'Suomenlinna' translates as 'Castle of Finland' and was once a former strategic fortress used to thwart off Russian expansionism.

We enjoyed just randomly wandering around the island marveling at how peaceful and serene the pace of life was compared to Helsinki.

We spotted several couples getting married, children playing under the shade and couples holding hands while sharing ice cream.

By far our favorite activity was just sitting down to enjoy a picnic in a picturesque setting overlooking some local boats in a quieter remote area of the island overlooking a rocky spot by the sea.

For those seeking a summertime day trip from Helsinki, I highly recommend visiting this UNESCO heritage site.

This is the kind of destination where planning several hours to leisurely stroll around the island - with an extended picnic with family and/or friends - is the perfect way to spend a summer day in Finland:

On ihana aurinkoinen iltapäivä nautimme lauttamatkan päässä Helsingistä, Suomen Suomenlinnan vierailulla Sea Fortress, vaeltelee ympäri saarta ja nauttia musta lakritsi jäätelöä osana meidän kävelykierroksen ympäri saarta.

Suomenlinna, the biggest Sea Fortress in the World - Finland 4K Travel Channel

A visit to Helsinki should also include a visit to The Fortress of Suomenlinna. The fortress lies on a group of partly connected islands, at the entrance of Helsinki's harbor. We set sail with a small ferry boat and go ashore in a bay. Slightly uphill, we reach the bastion Höpken and enter the courtyard with the tomb of Augustin Ehrensvärd. Ehrensvärd was the builder, who began construction of the fortress in 1748.
At that time, Helsinki still belonged to Sweden. That is why they called the complex Sveaborg (Sweden castle). Peter the Great founded St. Petersburg, moving the Russian frontier closer to Sweden.
In 1788, the fortress had its first practical test during the Swedish Russian naval warfare. After the capitulation in 1808, the fortress was a navy base of the Russian Tsar empire for the next 110 years. Finland became an autonomous Russian Grand Duchy. Up to 13.000 soldiers were here at the same time. During the Crimean war in 1855, the English and French fleet fired at the fortress and damaged it. Finland attained the independence in 1917, but a civil war claimed further victims. Suomenlinna became a prison camp, where 3000 prisoners found the death.
The fortress gained once again great importance in the 2nd World War. As a base for coastal artillery, air defense and submarines, it served the Finns for national defense. After the Second World War, it lost its importance. In 1973 one transformed Suomenlinna into a museum.
Because of its well preserved military architecture, the Fortress of Suomenlinna belongs to the UNESCO World Cultural Heritage since 1991. It receives 900.000 visitors per year.
First, we visit the casemates and gun positions of Susisaari in the south of Kustaanmiekka Island. The strategic position of the fortress is amazing. But also how one used the landscape to deposit ammunition depots in the rocky subsoil and to let the gun positions disappear between the hills. Up to 900 artillery pieces were placed here.
The iconic symbol of the fortress is the King's gate. In the early days, it was the only access to the fortress and secured by a drawbridge.

By Ferry from Åland to Helsinki - Finland 4K Travel Channel

Coming from Stockholm, we make a short stop in Mariehamn to embark and disembark passengers before we continue our journey by ferry to Helsinki. Most of the ferries berth here to profit from a tax exemption in their duty-free shops. At the end of the day, we enjoy the last light of the day before we go to our cabin, to get some sleep. The cabins offer little space, but for one night it's fine. There is everything you need.
In the morning we enjoy the bright sunshine on deck. The white silhouette of Helsinki appears already on the horizon. Again, the ferry must pass a strait. It is the port entrance between the islands of Kustaansalmi and Vallisaaren, guarded by the fortress Suomenlinna.
In the background are the large cruise ships that dock in the port of Vuosaari. Our ferry heads to the south harbor Eteläsatama in the city center.
On entry into port, we pass the island of Valkosaari, once a hospital and a quarantine ward. Today there are two restaurants.
During the mooring, we have a nice view of some of the city's sights like the Helsinki Cathedral (Finnish: Helsingin tuomiokirkko) and Uspensky Cathedral (Finnish: Uspenskin katedraali) from the deck. In front we see the Presidential Palace and the Supreme Court.

The Baltic Sea Is Crowded with Gigantic Ferries

At any given moment, there are dozens of gigantic ferries travelling between Finland, Estonia and Sweden. Naturally, the capitals Helsinki, Tallinn and Stockholm are popular destinations, but you shouldn't forget Turku. It's one of the biggest cities in Finland and only a two hour bus or train trip away from Helsinki. Why? Because the archipelago between Turku and Stockholm is simply incredible. It's a huge experience just to witness the apartment house sized ship zig zag between hundreds of small, rocky islands. And the nature is intoxicatingly beautiful. Of course, intoxication of a different kind is also available on board: many people go there just to eat, drink and party away. It's like having a big night out, and then waking up in a different city completely. Dare you try?
