How to spend 2 days in La Paz, Bolivia? | Aliz’s Wonderland

After our 3 days Uyuni Salt Flats tour, we travelled from Uyuni to La Paz and spent 2 days there. La Paz is the highest located capital in South America and it has a unique location between the mountains of Andes.

Want to learn more about La Paz? Visit my blog and read my post to find out the best places to visit in La Paz, Bolivia.

This is how we spent 2 days in La Paz:

DAY 0 - TRAVELLING TO LA PAZ
We travelled to La Paz from Uyuni by bus during the night, which took around 10 hours by Todo Turismo bus company. You can also purchase your ticket in advance online on the website of Kanoo Tours.

0:41 DAY 1 - DISCOVERING THE CENTRE OF LA PAZ
Our bus arrived in La Paz around 6:30 am. Then we headed to our hostel, La Posada de la Abuela Obdulia and slept a few hours.
After our brunch and coffees at Café del Mundo, we started to explore the centre of La Paz:
- starting at Witches' Market
- checking out San Francisco Basilica and San Francisco square
- strolling on Calle Jaen, the historical street
- walking to Plaza Murillo
- exploring the famous market, Mercado Lanza

3:13 DAY 2 - LA PAZ FROM A DIFFERENT ANGLE
Our 1st day in La Paz wasn’t that eventful and impressive, so on the 2nd day we tried out the local transportation systems and visited its neighbourhood.
- Valle de la Luna (Moon Valley) was our 1st destination, which is located 50-60 minutes from La Paz by a collectivo (minibus). The clay and sandstone formations of this area were shaped by wind and rain over thousands of years.
- Mi Teleférico operates at 4000 m above sea level in La Paz, so this is the world’s highest and longest cable car transportation system. We travelled by 3 lines and adored the panorama from above.
- At the Central station (one station of Mi Teleférico), we stopped by Typica café, where we drank specialty coffee and had lunch.
- After that, we planned to visit the Coca Museum, though it was closed, so we just had dinner close to it at Restaurant 1700.

After our 2 days in La Paz, we headed to Copacabana. It has a fantastic location at the lakeshore of Lake Titicaca. It should be on your bucket list, so make sure to add it to your Bolivian itinerary. In this blog post, I’ll tell you how to get there, where to stay and 6 things you cannot miss in Copacabana, Bolivia:

A complete guide to Copacabana and Lake Titicaca - Bolivia travel vlog | Aliz’s Wonderland

Copacabana is situated at Lake Titicaca, which is the world's largest navigable high-altitude lake with its 8372 km2, sitting at an altitude of 3812 m. The lake is situated between the mountains of Peru and Bolivia.
We travelled to Copacabana after 1,5-week travelling in Chile and Bolivia, so our 5 days there were very relaxed. Don’t worry, staying 3-4 days would be also enough to see the most significant spots around Copacabana.

Let’s see how we spent 5 days in Copacabana:

0:22 DAY 1 - TRAVELLING TO COPACABANA
Copacabana is approachable by taxi, rented car or as part of a tour. We chose the EASIEST AND CHEAPEST WAY and travelled there by bus from the Central Bus station in La Paz, which took 4 hours for us. We bought a bus ticket online on Tickets Bolivia, which offers transportation by multiple companies. Direct buses depart from La Paz at 7:30 am, 8 am and 1:30 pm.
After a 2-3 hours scenic drive we arrived at the boat station of Tiquina, where all passengers had to take off the bus, buy a boat ticket and cross the strait by a small boat. On the other side, we waited for our bus, which was transported by a little ferry.

Tickets Bolivia -
For more information about how to get there, prices and Copacabana read my blog post:

1:54 DAY 2 - A TRIP TO ISLAS FLOTANTES (FLOATING ISLANDS)
Islas Flotantes (Floating Islands) are located in Lake Titicaca and are accessible by boat from Copacabana. Tickets can be purchased at many places in Copacabana, though at tourist agencies it might be more expensive. We bought our return tickets in a kiosk at the lakeshore (at the end of Av 6 de Agosto).
During the 20 minutes ride, you can adore the snow-capped peaks of the Cordillera Real, green hills and blue vastness of the lake.

4:39 DAY 3 - DISCOVERING THE LAKESHORE
Copacabana sits between two hills, Cerro Calvário and Horca del Inca. The bay is home to many boats, so this part of the lake isn't recommended for swimming.
Trying out local dishes is part of travelling and discovering new cultures. THE MUST-TRY FOOD IN COPACABANA IS TROUT (trucha) and the perfect place to try it out is the lakeshore. Next to the harbour, you’ll find many kiosks serving trout. The menu and the prices are almost the same at every food stall.

5:12 DAY 4 - ISLA DEL SOL DAY TRIP
Isla del Sol is not just an ordinary island. It’s situated in Lake Titicaca and home to Inca ruins, scenic paths, cute llamas and other animals. You only have to enjoy this sacred atmosphere, get ready for high altitude and walk slowly.
During our Bolivian trip (March of 2020), ONLY THE SOUTHERN PART OF THE ISLAND WAS OPEN FOR VISITORS. Unfortunately, the northern and southern part had some differences again.
Read the blog post about our 1 day trip in Isla del Sol, Bolivia:
And watch the Isla del Sol travel video:

6:05 DAY 5 - RELAXING AND CLIMBING CERRO CALVARIO
The peak of Cerro Calvario dominates the lakeshore of Lake Titicaca at Copacabana. As I mentioned before, Copacabana lies at a high altitude, so WALKING AND CLIMBING CAN BE CHALLENGING.
The breathtaking panorama of the lake and the harbour will compensate for the exhausting hike. From the peak, you can also watch the sunset and its reflection on the surface of Lake Titicaca.

7:55 DAY 6 - TRAVELLING TO LA PAZ, EL ALTO AIRPORT
Buses depart from Plaza Sucre, the main square of Copacabana. For returning to La Paz, we chose a local bus, which wasn’t that comfortable but it stopped at El Alto, so we could reach the airport easier.

WHAT TO SEE IN LA PAZ + BOLIVIAN FOOD TOUR // BOLIVIA TRAVEL VLOG

After pushing our way through altitude sickness when we first arrived in La Paz, we finally made it out of our apartment and into the bustling administrative capital of Bolivia! A new country for us, we were so excited to see the sights and start getting to know Bolivia.

We spent the day exploring the city and trying as many local Bolivian dishes as we could, which is our preferred way of getting to know a new culture. We start our by day eating at a common chain restaurant called Wistupiku in the Sopacachi neighbourhood before making our way to San Pedro Prison, notoriously one of the most dangerous and lawless prisons in the world. From there we took mi teleferico up to El Alto to see the beautiful city views, and then headed back into the city centre to visit Mercado Lanza for lunch (which was an experience!). Then it was off to San Francisco Square where we found all sorts of art and food stalls, before finally seeing the notorious Witches Market which truly does hold many, many petrified llama fetuses.

Throughout this day of exploring we managed to try 8 Bolivian foods: humintas, pastel de queso, api, fricase, mocochinchi, a fruit salad dessert bigger than Nicole's head, helada de canela, and choripan. It was a full day of exploring and eating, but we finish the day feeling like we had experienced quite a bit of La Paz in just one day!

If you are wondering what to see in La Paz, if Bolivia is safe, or what foods to eat while you are in La Paz, then watch the video through to the end to see all the things you can get up to in just one day in the big city!

Travel guide to Santa Cruz de la Sierra, Bolivia | Aliz’s Wonderland

Santa Cruz de la Sierra was a totally different world after visiting Uyuni, La Paz and Copacabana. The mountain scenery and high altitude changed to humid weather, modern vibes and less poverty. I’d say not authentic Bolivia. However, we liked this other type of Bolivia with its exceptional flora and fauna.

Want to learn more about Santa Cruz de la Sierra? Visit my blog and read my post to find out The best things to do in Santa Cruz de la Sierra, Bolivia including a 2-day itinerary, map and prices.

HOW TO GET TO SANTA CRUZ DE LA SIERRA, BOLIVIA?
Viru Viru International Airport in Santa Cruz is Bolivia's largest international airport. You can fly there from Bolivia and other South American countries, as well as North America and Europe.
The airport is located 16 km from the city centre. The most affordable and easiest way to reach the centre is by airport bus 135. If you prefer comfort, just call Uber.

WHERE TO STAY IN SANTA CRUZ DE LA SIERRA?
Cosmopolitano Hotel Boutique has a great location in the centre. The boutique hotel was super stylish, and the staff was friendly and helpful. Our room was chic with minimal decoration and transparent glass walls of the shower.
