Child's Wooden Go Kart - Easy to Make
Asked by my grandchildren: “Build us a go kart grandad!” . Old pram wheels are not easy to find so bought new wheels from gokartdaddy.com. The wheels and axles are top quality but the same could not be said about the brake. It is poorly engineered and will not work using the supplied bolt. The solution is not difficult - by adding an extra bracket, mounted on a block screwed to the side of the kart solved the problem. The steering limiters are essential if you want to avoid crushed toes. The ‘R’ pins supplied with the wheels came out the first time the kart crashed into a hedge and a wheel came off. so were replaced with proper cotter pins. The total price for this project: £150. True, you could buy a ready-made kart for less but it wouldn’t be such fun or get the same envious looks, not just from other children but adults also. Have fun but please remember: a fully functional brake is essential and a cycle helmet would be a wise precaution.

Prototype Redneck Gocart/Dunebuggy
This is an old version of my redneck go cart, there have been dozens of versions, and it no longer looks anything like this. This old version could go up to 45 mph. It had an accelerator system that I designed using a system of pulleys, a wire, and a spring. It had one drive tire (a snowblower tire) and two extra rear tires for stability. The other rear tires were slightly higher so that the drive tire always touched the ground. The steering was composed an electric scooter tire and handlebars. It also had a windshield made out of Plexiglas. Although there were no brakes, it decelerated very quickly and could sop between 10-20 ft depending on how fast it was traveling. The acceleration was also really fast, which was surprisingly because the engine was only 4 hp (not including the straight pipe).The new version is 6.5 hp, and can go up to 60 mph.

Manco Gokart Gets A Flat
Just fixing up my recent Swapmeet buy($150). Slapped a Briggs 3.5hp engine on it, gassed it up, took it for a spin, and popped the tubeless drive tire trying to do donuts. Just aired it up and I'm good to go for the weekend again. Will very soon be buying an innertube to put in the tire to prevent this from happening again.

My Joe doesn't ask for anything. So when he showed me a picture in The Dangerous Book for Boys and said he wanted to build it I was on it. I got him some wheels from old motobecanes . He got tires and tubes. We used old beams from our old ceiling to support the axels, and the board for the body... We found that somewhere. It has been a huge hit in our neighborhood. Unfortunately we have no pavement around here, and there are no hills to speak of. Maybe that's good though. It would be tempting to go well beyond the safe limits of this little cart.
