The secret to learning another language quickly: Speak from day 1

A multilingual presentation of the Speak from day 1 package, which explains everything I know about learning another language quickly: Speak it from day 1. This package has been upgraded since I recorded this video and is now a part of my FI3M Premium package here:

Sales of this package help me to blog and make all my other videos for free. While this is a pitch for the product, you absolutely do not need to buy it to learn another language; only if you are curious about the details of how I do it.

Please take heed of the message of the video: speaking the language is the secret, not anything you might buy. No matter what, get out there and speak the language with people!

Irish guy wants to learn fluent Japanese in 3 months.. in Spain アイルランド人がスペインにいながら、3ヶ月で日本語ペラペラになれるのか

If you can't hear this, plug in headphones & it will work! Left&Right channels cancel one another out on some (not all) devices!! This video has subtitles in English AND Japanese! Click Youtube's captions option to activate. Blog post about this:
(I'll fix this sound issue for all future uploads of this series)

Some questions people generally have in these projects are answered in this video, for instance:
1. Why do this in 3 months? Why not just take your time? 01:06
2. Why the hell are doing this in Spain?? Why not just go to Japan now and spend longer there? 01:43
3. Is this a scam? Fluent in 3 months sounds like a dubious claim. 02:56
4. What do you mean exactly by fluent? 03:55
5. I think fluent can only be used when you speak exactly like a native speaker, so you are wrong to use it like you do Benny 04:14
6. What about all Kanji? 05:35
7. How do you plan to do all this 06:24
8. Some final encouragement 07:25

Please see the blog post for many questions answered that you may have. I explain my Kanji decision in more detail, give a timeline of how I see the project progressing, and say how I'm fixing issues I've had in similar 3 month projects in the past.

I'd really appreciate it if you shared this video with your friends, and don't forget to subscribe because there'll be WEEKLY updates! The first video entirely in Japanese will come already in a few days! :)

One edit: Ignore what I said about the JLPT. This test is NOTHING like the CEFRL tests, in that it completely ignores spoken ability (as well as writing ability), and only consists of a multiple choice $20 exam. It is taken very seriously by many institutions in Japan, but to me a language exam that doesn't test your spoken abilities is not a complete language test. I'll have a Japanese native with an academic background test my spoken level at the end of the project and share my results with you, even if I won't be awarded a certificate.

How I Plan to Learn Japanese in a Year

*Update*
Hey folks! I've started learning Japanese and, as expected, I've made a few tweaks to the plan along the way. There'll be a video about this at some point, but for now, here are the highlights:

1) GRAMMAR: I've received a TON of great grammar recommendations from viewers (thank you). The most-recommended resources are:
- Tae Kim's Guide to Learning Japanese
- Genki I & II
- Tobira
- Japanese From Zero

2) VOCABULARY: I'll need a significantly larger vocabulary than I initially stated here. While the 2000-word number I give in this video *is* equivalent to a B2 level for most European languages, Japanese requires quite a few more. I'll need more like 5000-6000 to hit the same level in Japanese. However, I had also overestimated the number of flashcards (and thus, time) per word that it will require (so, in theory I should be able to handle more vocabulary). I'm beginning vocab now (2 weeks in) and will have a better idea of how quickly I can progress as time goes on. More on that later.
3) KANJI: I was corrected by a couple viewers on this (thanks!): Contrary to what I stated here, Kanji actually do offer some hints about pronunciation. However, that doesn't help me much, in that they're still pretty unreliable for predicting pronunciation, due to there *almost always* being multiple readings possible. So, this doesn't really change anything for me, per se, but I just wanted to clear this up.

Polyglot tour of flat in 8 languages and 6 dialects

I decided to make this video to show my apartment in Berlin, but to make it more interesting my commentary is in 8 languages: English, Irish, Esperanto; French, Portuguese, Italian, German and Spanish, and in 6 dialects: France vs Quebec, Sao Paulo vs Rio, Spain vs Argentina.
This is all in one uncut take.
I actually prefer using my languages for conversation rather than talking to a camera, so this felt a little unnatural to me. This means that I didn't speak these languages as well as I normally would.
Switching between them so quickly is really hard!!! I probably mixed them up quite a lot. Sorry for not speaking them so well this time. Anyway, I hope you enjoy the video!

Tim Ferriss on language learning: Interview with Benny of Fluent in 3 months

Go to this blog post for a quick intro about Tim, and a full transcript of this entire interview. Otherwise, you can activate captions (in English) here on Youtube.

In this video I talked to Tim Ferriss of Four Hour Workweek fame, all about language learning. It was a great chance to see what we had in common, understand his background and motivation for getting into languages, and learn more about his strategies, as well as a fun sidebar where I try to persuade him the Irish language isn't that bad.

Sorry for the bad video quality, and only half my face coming through at times.

As mentioned briefly, I have ten copies of Tim's book I can give away to those with a US address (actually, his agent is letting me, I won't be mailing them to you from Brazil :) ).

Thumb up this video and then leave your comment here about the most valuable experience YOU have had from speaking another language, even if it's been from the basics. You might want to leave it on the blog post (link above) for more of a character limit than Youtube allows. I'll pick my favourite ten ones and request your US postal address on Monday. Thanks!

More details on his book, which is entirely about rapid learning in general, while using lots of examples from cooking, can be found here:
