Dominican Cooking │ Punta Cana Dominican Republic

#InformationUpdated January 27 2022.
Learn to make mouth-watering Caribbean delicacies like coconut fish and drunken stew on this unmissable cooking class in Punta Cana – you’ll feel like a true Dominican chef!

On the day of your cooking class, we’ll pick you up from your hotel in Punta Cana and head to a special kitchen located in the east of the Dominican Republic. While we get ready to cook, you’ll be served two drinks to kick off the evening in style. Choose from mamajuana, beer, rum, white wine, mojito or cuba libre! There will also be bottles of mineral water available.

Kitted out in our aprons, we’ll begin the cooking class following the instructions of our expert multilingual guide to prepare our chosen recipe. At the end of the practical class, we’ll be able to taste the fruits of our labour and judge our cooking skills for ourselves, trying the dishes we’ve prepared. Afterwards, you’ll be taken back to your hotel in Punta Cana.
What will we make?

Depending on the day you choose to enjoy the cooking class, you’ll prepare a different recipe: you’ll make coconut fish on Tuesdays and “sancocho borraco” or drunken stew, on Wednesdays. Both are staples of Dominican cuisine!
Tuesday: Coconut fish

Coconut fish is one of the most popular recipes in the Dominican Republic and it’s incredibly simple: all you need is a good fresh whole fish (preferably snapper or grouper), salt, crushed garlic, a few teaspoons of coconut milk and, above all, a lot of love! The final result is a tasty dish that will delight your tastebuds.
Wednesday: “Sancocho borracho”

Sancocho is another of the most typical dishes of the Caribbean. This hearty stew is prepared with different meats and local root vegetables, and we’re going to make it “borracho”, or “drunken style”! We’ll cook the ingredients up with a few cups of rum or another alcohol drink that we like – delicious!

Ultimate Dominican STREET FOOD Tour of Roseau, Dominica! Endless CARIBBEAN FOOD and Market!

I've never seen a market like this! The Biggest Market in Roseau on the island of Dominica absolutely blew me away with its amazing food, culture, history, and people. The bustling market was filled with incredible Caribbean Food and Street Food. I could have stayed there for ages just wandering through the streets.

With another morning on the tropical island of Dominica ahead of me, I kicked off my
day with a market tour of its capital, Roseau!

BOLO’S MOBILE: At the Bolo’s Mobile cart outside, I got a saltfish and herring
sandwich made with a hot dog bun. The fluffy bun and briny meat were fantastic with
the pepper sauce! I also enjoyed a passion fruit and sorrel juice.

ROSEAU MARKET: Inside the market, we saw lots of vendors selling a variety of things:
clothing, household items, and fresh produce. I tried some delicious crab backs and
bush rum, sugarcane, tender coconut and coconut water, cow skin, saltfish & bake, and
pommecythere juice. Everything was fantastic!

COCONUT VENDOR: We then drove to a coconut vendor with a truck full of coconuts.
The coconut was monstrous and full of water and meat. It was the sweetest coconut
water I’d ever had in my life, and the meat was sweet, too!

FOOTBALL HOUSE: This building also houses the Dominica Football Association
offices. It’s the only place on the island where you can buy authentic Dominica jerseys. I
bought one for about $40 USD!

FRESHWATER LAKE AND TRAFALGAR FALLS: From there, we drove uphill through
the jungle to Freshwater Lake, the largest lake on the island. You can swim and kayak
there, but obey the signs for your safety. Then, we drove to Trafalgar Falls, which are
twin waterfalls in the jungle. It takes 10 minutes to hike through the rainforest to reach
them. They’re spectacular!

Dominican Food - TOP 9 Local Dishes You Must Try in 2022 - Mangú, Sancocho, Habichuelas

Local cuisine. Typical local food – rice and beans, rice with chicken. What’s unique – it is local “Sancocho“. This is a soup that has seven types of meat. Local people usually cook Sancocho for some specific events. I would recommend you to find coconuts and coconut water. You can negotiate a bit and have a great price for it. The best thing about it – it’s fresh and great for your health. Take it slowly, sip by sip.

The Dominican Republic has the best selection of tropical fruits and veggies. Punta Cana local food – Is one of the most popular search inquiries in Google search. So we can assume that a lot of people who go to Punta Cana are foodies.

Everything grown here is organic without being force-ripened, irradiated and free of pesticides. Apart of local markets and grocery stores everywhere in the country you will find roadside food stands and vendors with freshly squeezed fruit juices, coconut water, smoothies, coffee brewed from locally harvested beans, snacks, nuts as well as lots of food trucks with Punta Cana local food, fruits and vegetables harvested from 10 minutes to 2 hours away.

Very often you will see roadside stands with Punta Cana local food run by local children. These children are selling cashew fruits (where cashew nuts come from), fruit jam and roasted sweet potatoes. During mango season you can enjoy hundreds of varieties of mango, which will cost you about 50 cents each.

Tourists and visitors tend to dine in their resorts with international cuisine choice, but those who would like to experience real Punta Cana local food and culture will have lots of options.

Dominican Republic culinary style is a combination of Taino, Spanish and African cuisines and had Puerto Rican, Cuban and Middle East influence as well. Each region has its own dishes but the majority of food ingredients are still common – white rice, beans, yucca, chili, sweet potato, plantains, avocado, fish, corn.

But also Dominicans love fast food. Here, in Punta Cana, you can find a large number of trucks, where they cook hot dogs, burgers, serve Punta Cana local food that is typical for this region such as yaroa (plantains, cheese and meat mixed with mayonnaise and ketchup), chicharrones (made of fried pork belly or fried pork rinds) or mofongo (it has as basic ingredients green plantains, pork rind and garlic).

Dominicans often eat PicaPollo (literally “snack with chicken”). It is probably the most popular street Dominican food. Pica pollo is a dish consisted of fried chicken, frited potato and fried plantains (tostones). It is incredibly popular in the country.

Traditional DOMINICA BREAKFAST and CARIBBEAN FOOD TOUR in Portsmouth! BAKE and SALTFISH!

???????? More Dominica Videos:

On the morning of my first full day in Dominica, I headed out on a fun and diverse Dominican breakfast food tour of Portsmouth!

U&H LOCAL KITCHEN: After watching the cook, Ursula, work in the kitchen, we tried her saltfish (codfish) with salad and roasted breadfruit. The saltfish was tender and flavorful, while the roasted breadfruit was starchy and had a bit of sweetness. We also enjoyed a passionfruit, pineapple, and soursop smoothie, which had a tropical feel and helped wake me up!

BAKE AND CHEESE: Our driver Bongo stopped at a local convenience store for a bake and cheese, which is crispy on the outside but fluffy, doughy, and cheese on the inside. It smells a lot like a Brazilian pao de queijo!

LOCAL MARKET: We briefly stopped at a local market and saw some vendors selling produce and honey. The market was pretty quiet at the moment, but it becomes very lively on Saturdays, which is Market Day. Past it is a fish market and a pier overlooking the Caribbean.

GREEN LIGHT RESTAURANT AND BAR: Here, I got a saltfish bake, which had a crispy exterior and a soft, doughy interior. The salty, briny saltfish was perfect. Adding hot sauce gave it a kick—it was definitely spicy!

CONVENIENCE STORE: Inside, I met a Guyanese man who gave me a hat before we ended our tour!
