Surviving Motorcycle Hell: How to Make it Through Winter

Well, winter is here, the snowblower has been moved to the front of the garage and the bikes are all bundled up, waiting for spring. What is the two-wheeled addict to do now that we cannot ride? Here are a few things that do do keep myself motivated during these dark times.

Top 10 tips to stay Warm and Dry on a Long Motorcycle Trip!

How to stay Warm and Dry on a Long Motorcycle Trip?

We all know how great is to ride in the nice sunny day, but it is a different story when it’s cold or when it’s raining. In this video I will give you 10 practical tips

If you go on the long motorcycle trip it is almost guaranteed that there will be some really cold days, maybe rain, or both at the same time. You have to face the reality and confess that there are some negatives of riding motorcycle.

1. Rain gear.
It is so obvious, buy a decent rain gear. It doesn’t matter how good and how expensive is your riding gear. There is no 100% waterproof. It could be after 5 minutes or after 5 hours, but it will start leaking. Choose a model with two parts – top and bottom. The full body suits are nice, but it is very difficult to wear it, especially on the road.

2. Wear it on time.
Yes, correct, wear it on time. The rain never start just like that from no were. You will feel it, see it and even smell it a long before it starts. Do not believe that it could be just few drops and your gear will survive. If it’s not will be too late. If you soak your gear, will be useless to have the rain coat on the top. It will make everything worst – the water will penetrate your gear and will come inside.

3. Synthetic materials.
Use only synthetic materials. They do not hold the water and dry quick. Probably you have heard the phrase: “ Cotton kills” – correct, with cotton clothes you can put yourself in real troubles.

4. Dress on layers.
Layers are the key. On the hot days – just t-shirt. When it become cold add another with long leaves on the top. If it’s not enough switcher on the top. It is very handy, especially when you have to cross the mountains. On the picks is cold, but after few km hot again. When you have layers you can easily fix this.

5. Nice size wind shield.
Sounds not on the place, but believe me it is. It protect not only from the wind, but also from the rain. It is the same with the hand guards. If you have both you will notice a significant difference, especially when it’s not raining hard. You will be almost un touch. When you don’t need to stop all the wind with your chest will be much easier to keep your body warm.

6. Medical gloves.
I told you about it in the previous video, but I will do it again. You can wear it under your gloves and they will keep your hands dry and warm. Cost nothing, but will make big difference.

7. Rain boot covers.
Do not forget to buy one. The boots are the same as the riding gear. It will be a matter of time to start leaking. With the covers you just double secure the situation.

8. Pin lock
If your helmet come with pin lock great, If not you can buy an universal and mounted on your visor. You will be so thankful when it starts raining.

9. Wind stopper.
Buy a nice full face wind stopper. Small and light like this are fine, but when the weather change you will need something like this. It will help you in the cold, but also on the raining days. As you can see it completely cover my head, my neck and part of my chest. Once you zip your jacket you will feel a big difference.

10. Waterproof bags
Bags like this you can find in almost any motorcycle or hiking gear shops. They are cheap, but will keep all of your stuff dry. It doesn’t matter do you have soft bags or hard cases you can use it in both. They will also help you to have some order. For example you can have big size for the clothes and small for socks, under ware, electronics and so on.

Many of you asked me: what gear I use and where they can find it? I have created this Amazon shop to make it easy for you.
Note: The links I am going to provide are Affiliate. An affiliate link means, that I will earn a small commission, if you decide to buy something and it doesn’t cost you any extra. I don’t feel as if you owe me anything, but if you are going to buy the product anyway, then why not?

How to stay Hydrated on Motorcycle?

The Best Hydration System for Motorcycle Touring

It’s always amazed me how something so important is so underestimated! Most of you will spend so much time and energy on different adventure gadgets, but will never ever think how important is to stay hydrated. This small bag cost nothing, compare to the rest of the gear, but it is a must have item for every motorcycle rider. In this video I will share my opinion about it, stay with me!
Welcome back guys. I don’t know how many riders I met on the road in last 10 years, but I have to say that about 20% were with hydration packs.
I don’t know why, but people always underestimate the need of such an item.
On the long riding days I will recommend to drink water all the time. When you are thirsty it is already too late. Even if you are not thirsty you have to drink. When you don’t have enough water you start to lose concentration and the best way to do it by having one of these hydration packs.
You can drink once per 15 min, half an hour or more. You can have just couple of drops, but it will keep you concentrated all the time.
Most of you believe that it is the same if you just have a simple bottle of water. Before I continue I want to show you short video clip from my last trip.
Another example is when you fight with the time or ride in the rain or on a busy road with a lot of trucks, you just overtake them all and now if you stop you have to do it again and many more…
You will simple ignore the water until the next stop. In most of the cases this will be fine, but there will be some moments when this will be very bad idea.
Another benefit to have it it’s because it is always there in my backpack and I use it all the time. It doesn’t matter where I am, on the bike or around the city. If you have a bottle you need to hold it. Even when I go to bed or in the tent I always take it with me.
The only moment where I cannot use it was last winter on my trip to the Balkans because it was too cold. Actually the weather forced me to stop more often so I was able to drink enough and stay hydrated.
You have to know that when you travel with motorcycle, your body consume double, maybe triple more water and this is when the conditions are normal. When it’s different story. Especially if you do it with mesh jacket or even worse ride with t-shirt and sandals. You actually drying like fish on the sun. Another example are the cold days your body needs double, that’s why the hikers need to melt snow. Also when you travel on high elevation as I just did in India you need to drink much more water than you normally do.
As I told you in the previous video the man could survive without food one month, but only couple of days or even hours, depends of the conditions without water. If this is not reason to have it then I don’t know what would be!

Are You a Biker or a Motorcyclist? And, Does it Really Matter?

Are You a Biker or a Motorcyclist? And, Does it Really Matter?

I usually do not spend much time thinking about such topics, but recently I have been lurking around the net, and find that the this is a topic of much discussion. Personally, I think worrying about what other people think you are is a waist of time. It is also a waist of time to focus on minor differences between groups, when in truth, we all have much more in common than we think.

Planning for a Motorcycle Trip: Creating the Big Picture

Planning for a Motorcycle Trip: Creating the Big Picture

In this video I am starting a new series planning for a big trip in 2019. I want to take a 60 days trip around the US and the first step is to create the big picture. That is, I create the vision of the overall trip by identifying the places I want to ride or visit and then letting my mapping software create a basic route. Once this is done, I will go back and break the large route up into individual segments. In this case 60 of them.

Overcoming Travel Anxiety | Thoughts from the Road

At least once on every trip I have a moment where I stop and ask myself “Why am I doing this, why did I think this was a good idea.” This is normally followed by a series of other anxious thoughts.

Traveling Alone vs. With Friends

I got a suggestion from one of my Slab insiders to do a video talking about the differences between traveling alone vs. traveling with friends. I thought this was a good idea, so I made this vlog covering the topic.

[S2 - Eps. 22] Let's get OUT OF HERE - Tierra del Fuego Patagonia

I've been very lucky with a week of great weather, but now there is some bad weather predicted for Tierra del Fuego. I don't want to find myself stuck in Ushuaia for two weeks with snow, so today I'm riding out of here.

It's was a long day of riding, a border crossing and to top it off, some nice dirt-road but I reached Porvenir!
