Kite Crashes - Why It Happened?

Hi guys. We have several different crashes today.
We are gonna save that one for last so make sure you stick around to the end.
I'm not looking to make fun of anyone or put down anyone. It's all aboout looking at crashes or incidents that
happened and learning something from them. Also helping newcomers understand what went wrong so that they can
kind of make a better judgement on if the sport is right for them or not. Though yes, sometimes it can be funny or scary. And a little of
laugh is not prohibited to anyone. Moreover if you do kitesurfing, than you know how dangerous it is and what a small misatke
can bring you up to. And everybody who started kitesurfing knows how painfull it can be especially when you are beginner.
I don't know anybody who does kitesurfing and did not have accidents. Its all about time and practice.
So, let's get right into it.
Allright, I have few crash videos lined up ready to go.

Let's get into a clip number one. This is a very relevant video.
This video comes from Fartssmellgood channel on youtube. He is about to launch his Cabrinha kite. Seems like everything goes well from the beginning.
And in a moment the kite starts to behave aggressively forcing the guy to his right side. I'm pretty sure the guy is quite experienced. But what could
cause such abnormal behaviour of the kite? If you'll look more closely on his lines on the bar then it will come all togeather in pieces.
His right line is wrapped around the bar. Now it's only about 5 cm difference between left and right lines. But that is a lot of difference to
throw the kite on the right side. Luckily this guy has a quick behaviour on releasing safety mechanism. He knows something is wrong, he does not
know yet what exactly is wrong but he is ejecting his safety mechanism to get him in safer position. He did not get hurt. If he did not do it so quickly he could get severe damages. Those situations require immediate reaction from the kiter. So he did quite well. It was frightening experience for him and it definitely could have gone A LOT worse. Just to bear in mind - before giving thumbs up - check the lines are stright and clear and not wrapped around the bar.

Second clip - the guy does everything good. His speed is quite fast for those waves. And he also seems to be quite experienced. One thing I can notice is that his kite is more in horizontal position - closer to the sea. Which makes his speed faster but it will not lift him up when necessary. Usually when I'm riding such waves i'm trying to keep my kite closer to 11 or 1 o'clock. It helps me to jump over the wave if i need. Here he wanted to gain speed however he underestimated the wave and its impact on his front side of the board. If you will not rise the front of the board on time then this exact thing happens. The board goes stright into the water with a force and it stops immediately the guy. Which is resulting in such roll. He seems to be fine but the front flip he made is too fast.

Next video is from West Sussex (UK). October. Is 40 knots outside (which is more than 45 miles/hour). So its pretty windy. His kite is just 6m. He is just launching the kite and goes into the water. And suddenly one of the lines is getting cut off / untangled. Not a happy start of kitesurfing day.
It seems like this guy is a beginner or started kitesurfing recently. And I will tell you why am I thinking like this. Never ever try to grab 2 or more lines under tention with bare hands. Especially on such wind. Usually I can grab one line at the begining of the bar when i try to relaunch the kite. This is needed to fly it up from the water. And I can grab it about 50 cm from the bar with a mind that i will be able to release it at any moment.
What he is doing here - he grabs 2 lines barehanded in a 40 knots wind. It can easyly cut the skin on all his fingers at once.
All of his lines are equal and under the tension while he is wrapping them on the bar. This means that the kite can catch the wind easily. And once it will happen - it will fly with all its force to a random direction. This is a matter of time when the kite will start biting hard. Of course now he knows it. This is how we learn. What needs to be done here - only one front line should be looped around the bar - it has to be pulled and tied on the bar first. At least 2 meters of a single line should be tighten on the bar. There will be only one line which holds the tension of the kite. All other lines should have several meters of slack. And only after you are sure that the kite has tension on one line only - then you can wrap all lines simultaniously on his bar. This means the kite can not fly. Note - if a kite starts flying or pulling during the self rescue - you can let go of your bar and eject your leash to free yourself from the kite.

Revolution Kite Fly in a 360 Degree Time-Lapse on April 15, 2015

A time-lapse of some kite flying while clouds pass overhead in the mid-day sky. A 360 degree video view.

I wanted to try out the time-lapse function of my Kodak SP360 camera. Since there was a nice veil of clouds passing overhead I let the camera record while I was practicing with my Revolution B-Pro mid-vent kite. Added some tinkly music during the edit. This was about 45 minutes at a 2 second interval.
