In this video we go over how Hurricane Ida taught us which of the three portable generators that we tried is best for our 30amp Retro RV. We tested the Honda EU2200I, Honda EU3000IS and the Champion 3650W. We show starting each generator and compare the noise levels. We discuss which of the three portable generators is best to power our camper at home and while camping.

Westinghouse iGen2500 Unboxing & Break In
In this video, Sharon, one of the Two Tired Teachers, shows the unboxing and breaking in of a Westinghouse iGen2500. We already have a Westinghouse iGen2200. In future videos Sharon plans to compare the two and run them in parallel. Honestly the reason we bought the 2500 is so we could run it in parallel with the 2200 so that neither of them have to pull the AC alone.
One of the things we really like about the Westinghouse generators is they send you everything you need except the gasoline. It comes with the oil, a funnel, a spark plug socket and a way to turn it, as well as both a flathead and Phillips head screwdriver. The new generator came with a nice case.
Until Sharon started researching breaking in a small engine, she didn't realize it was so controversial. She decided to go through the breaking in recommended by people who work on small engines. It won't hurt anything and it might help.
The goal with the second generator is to have it run at optimal capacity for as long as possible. The break in involves a lot of oil changes.
The first thing Sharon did was remove the spark plug and pour about 2 T of Marvel Mystery Oil inside, (Any oil would probably work.) Then replace the spark plug. You don't want to try to start the generator with everything dry; you want to be sure it is well lubricated.
Once Sharon took the side panel off and added oil into the oil fill, she slowly pulled the cord, not trying to crank the generator, but to be certain that oil was in and on everything it should be. She pulled the cord about 10 times. Once the gas and oil were in, Sharon did those slow cranks.
With these first oil changes, Sharon didn't use the oil that came with the generator. Instead she used the cheapest nonsynthetic oil she could find. The reason for that is that synthetic oil reduces friction. As you are breaking in the generator, you want some friction so that those moving parts that have never worked together can seed.
With the first oil, Sharon ran the generator for 30 minutes with no load on it. She did that to clean out any residue that happened to be on the parts. It was time for another oil change. With the next oil change, Sharon put in more of the cheap oil, and ran the generator for one hour under half or less capacity. When she changed that oil out, Sharon could see metal shards that had come off. The oil was filthy.
For the next oil change, Sharon ran the generator at half capacity for 2 hours. This time she used a weed eater and hedge clippers. The load fluctuated as Sharon used the tools and turned them off. After she finished with the yard, she went back to the space heater to give the generator a load.
Sharon did another oil change. This time after the oil change where she still saw small metal pieces, she let the generator run for 3 hours. After 5 hours, Sharon plugged the RV into the generator and had it run the AC. We do have a soft start on our air conditioning unit, and it was turning off and on.
It was time for another oil change. This time Sharon used the oil that came with the generator.
Once the generator has run for 20 hours, Sharon will change to a synthetic oil.
Westinghouse Wgen5300dfv break-in
UPDATE:.7/2021
While this got us thru the ice storm of 2020 in relative style, it was not enough to power the water heater and 2.5 ton AC/heater unit. Yes it was ridiculous to expect it in retrospect, but the generator did power the house, and two 1500 watt oil filled heaters (used to break in the generator) they kept the entire house at about 62°, that is 1,500 square feet of space. the generator powered the house to include TV, heaters, 2 refrigerators, and a medium chest freezer, and electric stove much of the house is LED for the lights The wife was happy except the lack of hot water, and helping me fuel the generator (I didn't like messing with it either truth be told). The 100-lb tank lasted 36 hours roughly. And that was a tractor supply fill.
We have since had NG run to the house, and installed a gas water heater. The NG will be used to power the water heater, and wgen9500DF with electric start and remote start. The wife really wanted the electric / remote start ability. And I liked not having to pull start myself. I have since upgraded the electrical box to a 50 amp unit which is a game changer. 3600kw vs 12000kw is a substantial change in power. I have sold the generator to my electrician who saw all my preps well doing the 30 amp to 50 amp changeover, and wants to do something similar. So I guess this gets a stamp of approval from somebody that knows the business.
I have broken the new generator in using the same manner as the one in the video. Except I used natural gas.
Here is my setup for the break-in/bedding process.
I put in 10-30w non-detergent oil. In order to put an intermittent voltage load I used a bn-link short period repeat cycle intermittent timer instead of building one. I'm using a quick detach system on the connector at the generator and for my 100# connector I'm using an adapter that will accept my westinghouse supplied regulater. The adapter basically turns my tank into an XXL 20# tank. From watching other vids I cycle on the oil filled heaters (1000w ea) on 1 minute and off 10 sec. I will do this for 4 hours. After this is done I will drain the oil and put synthetic oil in for it's life

In the summer of 2015 we downsized our generator from a 7500w Onan Diesel to a 2500w Propane powered one.
In this video we answer the common questions we've got.. primarily, just how does such a small generator run our entire bus? And yes, we can run an AC off it (and charge the batteries).

Here's a travel tip for you folks with a Honda EU2000i inverter generator. Maintainence on this Honda takes only a few tools and just a little time, but is vital to the performance and longevity of this fine inverter generator. Basic maintenance should be performed regularly. In this video I will show you how I do maintenance on my eu2000i.
