Pope John Paul II Celebrates Christmas One Last Time

A highlight for our crew was filming the midnight Mass at the Vatican on Christmas Eve — which happened to be Pope John Paul II's last Christmas. The vast basilica was packed, the pope seemed radiant, and our cameraman put our viewers right in the front pew. The Vatican is generally a very difficult place for visiting film crews to get permission to do anything. But for some reason, their welcome warmed at Christmas and we found ourselves with a prime spot in the center of St. Peters — midway up the central pilaster under Michelangelo's magnificent dome with a front balcony perch to catch the action.

What you didn't see was 10,000 worshippers tumbling out of St. Peter's at about 1:00 in the morning in the rain. Our crew, about the last people to leave the basilica, was unable to find a taxi, and had to walk through Rome for an hour laden with all their gear to get back to their hotel. Here's just a bit more of Pope John Paul II's last Christmas Mass. Subscribe at for regular blog updates from Europe. #ricksteves #ricksteveseurope #popejohnpaulii

Rome's Four Patriarchal, or Papal, Basilicas

A video guide of the four major Basilicas of Rome you must visit to complete a Papal pilgrimage.

The main distinction of the Papal Basilicas is that they each have a special holy door. These doors are only opened during Jubilee years. All one's sins will be forgiven if one manages to go through each of these doors within one day in one of these holy years. Unfortunately the last Jubilee was in the year 2000, so the next holy year is still 13 years away.

The only ones allowed to celebrate Mass in these basilicas are the Pope or those especially delegated by the Pope.

Major Basilica is the title given to the four highest-ranking Roman Catholic churches:

ST. PETER'S BASILICA

This building replaced Old St. Peter's Basilica, a Romanesque structure begun by Constantine in 323 on the site of the crucifixion of St. Peter. The obelisk which stands in the middle of St. Peter's square originally stood in Nero's circus, having been brought to Rome in 40 AD by Caligula and was thus witness to the deaths of numerous Christian martyrs, including St. Peter. It was moved to its current location in 1586. The present Basilica was constructed between 1506 and 1667.

Virtual Tour:

BASILICA OF ST. MARY MAJOR

This is the only one of the patriarchal basilicas to retain its original structure, although it has been embellished and added on to over the centuries. It is believed to be the oldest church in the west dedicated to the Blessed Virgin Mary. The lovely legend of Our Lady of the Snows is associated with the construction of this church.

Virtual Tour:

BASILICA OF ST. JOHN LATERAN

The first basilica was dedicated on this site in the early 300s. From that time until the 1300s, it was the principal residence of the popes. It is still officially the seat of the Patriarch of Rome. The current church dates from the 17th century.

Virtual Tour:

BASILICA OF ST. PAUL'S OUTSIDE THE WALLS

The site of St. Paul's martyrdom, originally outside the city of Rome. A first, rather small, basilica was built by Constantine around 320. A larger basilica, built in 390, was destroyed by fire in 1823. The current basilica is intended to replicate the original structure.

You also may want to take an online virtual tour of the Basilica of St. Paul Outside the Walls. (This is also the basilica with the famous portraits of all the popes on the walls.)

PAPAL AUDIENCE WITH POPE FRANCIS!-Vatican City

Every Wednesday, you can have the opportunity to get up close and personal with the Pope in St. Peter's Square at The Vatican with what's called the Papal Audience. The Pope gives prayers and blessings in several languages to the people in attendance. If you want to be close, you can get tickets (which are free) for one of two large seating areas and the Pope will either walk by or be driven by pretty close to where you are sitting. The best closeups I have of the Pope are at the end of the video, starting at around the 14:04 mark.

Why Pope Francis does not kneel or genuflect during Mass

This clip is taken during Holy Mass on the Solemnity of the Annunciation of the Lord, Milan, Italy, 25 March 2017. Pope Francis can be seen informing his MC at the start of the Creed that he wished to kneel during the 'Et Incarnatus Est'. It was, of course, at the Annunciation that God became Man so kneeling during these words is especially significant. The struggle to stand again explains the Pope's general avoidance of kneeling or genuflecting during services.

In Poland, Pope John Paul II is more than just a Catholic saint - he’s a national icon. Born Karol Wojtyła almost exactly a century ago outside of Kraków, the future pope would go on to become one of the most important figures of the 20th century, giving his homeland the courage to pursue democratic change, which would start the domino effect of bringing down Communism in Eastern Europe.

The Man Who Didn’t Want to be Pope

On February 10, 2013, in what began as a rather innocuous assembly, Pope Benedict the XVI stunned the world by announcing that he would be retiring.

Not only were people stunned, but to paraphrase King George in the Musical Hamilton, most people weren’t even aware that was something a pope could do.

Yet, it is something popes can do, and the precedent was set over 700 years earlier.

Learn more about Pope Celestine V, the man who really didn’t want to become pope, on this episode of Everything Everywhere Daily.
