How the U.S. Snagged All These Islands

x

World's MOST EXTREME Airports (Caribbean Edition)

Watch this video to explore THREE of the world’s MOST EXTREME Airports! The best part, they’re all a ten minute flight apart from each other.

St Maarten will be our base of operations for this Caribbean Adventure. We’ll first explore the world famous Maho Beach where it’s easy to watch jumbo jets land at the nearby St. Maarten Princess Juliana International Airport.

After that, we’ll make the unforgettable 10-minute flight to St. Baarths and experience the unbelievable approach into that island’s airport. It requires specially trained pilots to fly over a hill – and oncoming traffic - before essentially diving toward the airport below. It is hair-raising and anxiety inducing, not for the faint of heart!

We’ll see more of the island before flying to Saba, home to the world’s shortest commercial runway. The approach into that airport and landing is as close to landing on an aircraft carrier as I’ve ever felt, but it was the departure that was the most nail-biting of all!

This Caribbean Aviation Adventure is one we’d recommend to just about everyone. Hope you enjoy!

ALL ALONE on This Island | Scuba Diving Dry Tortugas | Sailing Vessel Delos Ep 326

There's nothing quite like realizing you're the only souls on an entire island! In this episode we continue our exploration of the magical and remote Florida Keys. After a great nights sleep Kazza decides to take the paddle board out for a spin in the calm and sunny conditions and paddles right over a nurse shark. The shark isn't spooked at all and she gets some great shots of it swimming under her. After taking care of our daily boat chores, like cleaning the bottom, we decide to go breath underwater and take Maggie out to the Wind Jammer Wreck. It's an amazing experience to scuba dive such a huge sailboat from the era of working cargo sailing ships. The visibility is AMAZING and we're surrounded by barracudas, schools of fish, and some incredibly healthy coral! After our dive we take Maggie out to Loggerhead Key and find ourselves completely along with the entire island, lighthouse, and beach to ourselves. The Little Nugs is in her element and absolutely loves exploring the beach while we take turns snorkeling. The weather takes a shift and we batten down the hatches for a 3 day blow where the winds are hitting 30 knots. We sit good and comfortable after moving Delos to a more protected spot. Finally, Brian goes on a night time-lapse mission and gets some incredible shots of the stars rotating behind Fort Jefferson!

Top 10 Islands in Asia 2019 | Travel Destinations

Every year for our World’s Best Awards survey, Travel + Leisure asks readers to weigh in on travel experiences around the globe — to share their opinions on the top cities, islands, cruise ships, spas, airlines, and more. Readers rated islands according to their activities and sights, natural attractions and beaches, food, friendliness, and overall value.
Source:

10. Java, Indonesia
9. Boracay, Philippines
8. Koh Samui, Thailand
7. Cebu, Philippines
6. Naoshima Island, Japan
5. Koh Lanta, Thailand
4. Maldives
3. Bali, Indonesia
2. Palawan, Philippines
1. Sri Lanka

The flight time (and resulting jet lag) required to get to Asia from the U.S. is no joke. But the heaps of praise readers bestowed on the best islands in Asia prove the effort is more than worthwhile. If you need any urging to leave your comfort zone — or at least your time zone — consider this: five islands on this list also appear on the list of the best islands in the world, including the verdant isle that has snagged the top spot in both categories.

The Philippine islands of Cebu (No. 7), Palawan (No. 2 here, but also voted one of the World’s Best Islands), and Boracay (No. 9) are longtime favorites, thanks to top-notch reef and wreck diving, white-sand beaches, hiking trails with waterfalls, and welcoming locals. Five-star lodgings with water views and doting service abound, from the Shangri-La Boracay Resort & Spa to El Nido’s four eco-friendly, waterfront Palawan properties.

In Thailand, Koh Lanta (No. 5), which also makes the World’s Best Islands list this year, and Koh Samui (No. 8) both continue to attract passionate fans for their thriving marine life, national parks, white-sand beaches, azure water, and spectacular food. Then there are the islands’ superlative accommodations: the Four Seasons Resort Koh Samui took the No. 9 spot among the best Southeast Asian resorts, and Koh Lanta’s Pimalai Resort & Spa, a member of Small Luxury Hotels of the World, delivers total beachside relaxation.

For a hit of culture, consider Japan’s Naoshima Island (No. 6), which makes its debut on this list. Located in the Seto Inland Sea, it is renowned for its installations of contemporary art. Pritzker Prize–winning architect Tadao Ando spent 15 years designing the area’s buildings and museums, as well as the Benesse House hotel, where each of the six guest rooms has a gorgeous sea view.

All of these islands are stunning in their own right, but one is so spectacular that it wins not only the coveted top spot, but T+L readers’ vote for best island in the world.

After the terrorist attacks in April, Sri Lanka’s booming tourism industry has taken a hit, but the island country is on the mend — and as glorious as ever to visit. It’s worth clearing your calendar to spend as much time as possible on this 25,000-square-mile jewel, located off the coast of India. Animal enthusiasts can explore its national parks and spot wildlife including leopards, elephants, and peacocks, while its sprawling tea plantations offer views out over the island’s lush, green hills. You could happily spend weeks on these inland adventures, but you won’t want to miss the coast, where divers, snorkelers, and waders alike revel in the cerulean waters that whales, dolphins, and sea turtles are lucky enough to call home.

ABOUT US:
Jupiter² was built in the Philippines by an Australian designer for Jamie. During his time away from work, Jamie lived on board and cruised South East Asia. One of his life dreams is to sail around the world. His plans came together at the end of 2018 when he met a Filipina lounge singer in China. Princess was yearning for a vacation since she had been working many years to support her family. Finally, her siblings got their own jobs and she decided to join Jamie on Jupiter² and go sailing. It was a wild decision for her because she had never sailed before. For the first time, they sail for two weeks around Phuket, Thailand. She began to see what Jamie love about the sea. They both resigned from their jobs in early 2019 and began cruising full time.

Hopefully some inspiration to Quit Job and Go Sailing.

BEST OF VENICE | Tips on avoiding CROWDS for a GREAT experience

Our next stop in our Italy tour was Venice. Venice is a beautiful city made up of over 100 islands. Between all of these islands are the canals filled with the iconic gondolas. We of course made sure to hop on one of these gondolas for the classic Venetian experience. We also spent time visiting a couple of the over 400 bridges throughout the city, as well as enjoying the beautiful architecture in the city such as St. Mark's Basilica. After walking around the city for several hours it was time to find some food and we found the perfect lunch stop. Sempione is a cute restaurant overlooking one of the many canals in the city. We were lucky and snagged one of the only balcony tables so we could sit right by the canal watching gondolas go by as we enjoyed our pasta!

JOURNAL ENTRY 5/4/17 THE BAHAMAS

As we approached Green Turtle Cay we came upon what looked to be a delightful little anchorage at Settlement Harbour. We dropped the anchor and spent a calm evening in a protected, but gusty anchorage.

We were excited to find this little spot, because of it's proximity to No Name Cay. We had recently found out that there are pigs living on the island, much like the more popular and well known pigs at Big Major Spot in the Exumas. There were a lot more pigs here in the Abacos, but they were definitely more smelly, gross and aggressive. There were lots of cute baby pigs to look at, but we were not able to get very close to many of them due to the mother pigs being very protective of them.

After a very brief pig diversion we got back to our more important task of finding dinner. One thing that we've really noticed in the Abacos is how much more reef access there is compaired to the Exumas. We motored around to the outer windward side of No Name Cay were there is no shortage of fish filled reefs and again easy access to tons of dive moorings.

After catching a fish for dinner we motored back to Turtle to find that our boat had moved about 200 feet from where we left it. It is a mystery to us how it randomly moved, even after being anchored there all night in gusty conditions. Our guess at the time was that one of the boats anchored next to us must have snagged our anchor line when they left the anchorage.

The weather forecast is showing the wind boxing the campus during the next couple of days, so we want to make sure we are in a well protected anchorage. White Sound looks like it will be the perfect spot for us, but we have to wait for high tide to get in through the channel with our 5' keel.

Upon dropping anchor at White Sound we noticed that our anchor wasn't catching the bottom at first. Randall dove on the anchor once we got a good tug, and found that our anchor was snagged on a large piece of chain. It is probably the only thing that stopped us from dragging further in the pudding like bottom. He also found a lot of random junk on the bottom of the bay, like an outboard motor, and engine block, and lots of chain and ropes. We later found out that this anchorage has a history of boats dragging and probably isn't the safest place to leave your boat during storms. Who knows, maybe the bottom at Settlement Harbour has a similar bottom too.

We are so relieved to have found such a well protected anchorage and we're looking forward to exploring this island and taking it easy for the next couple of days while we wait for the weather.
