How Poor People Survive in the U.S.A

Around 40% of America's wealth is held by the top 1% of Americans and only 1.6% of America's wealth is spread between the bottom 50% of Americans. This is America's wealth gap and it's only getting bigger, but perhaps more alarming than this is that 40 million Americans are living below the poverty line! that's approximately 1 in every 8 Americans.

America is known worldwide as a rich and powerful nation which makes The American Dream and striving to succeed seem like good mantras to follow, and this may be so.
In America, hard work and dedication are rewarded, anything is possible if you strive for it. on the flip side, if you're lazy and unambitious you won't do so well.

Why So Many Poor?
Although you may think that people are poor because of a lack of ambition this isn't always the cause. In a society with such a large wealth gap, the middle is a precarious place to be. Rising housing costs mean that more and more middle-class people rent, this is because a house is no longer a place to live anymore, it's an investment vehicle.
So if you've got a decent job, you've got health insurance and you're renting a nice place to live, all's well. But If you get ill, have an accident, or lose your job, things get complicated and what was a spiraling slope to riches rapidly becomes a slippery slide to poverty.

How Do The Poor Survive?

Food
In 1965 President Lydon B Johnson declared War on poverty in the United States and created Food Stamps which are distributed to the poor. Today more than 40 million Americans depend upon them. The amount given depends upon your income and the number of children you have, an unemployed single mother with three children receives around $600 a month which is not enough considering the average food budget for a family of 4 is $1000 a month.
There are however Non-profit organizations and volunteers who visit poorer areas in food trucks offering free meals to children.

Healthcare
Lack of insurance makes it virtually impossible for unemployed people to receive proper medical and dental care.
Fortunately, there are non-profit organizations such as Remote Area Medical that offer Pop-up clinics all over the country. These clinics appear in an area for a weekend and offer free dental care, medical consultations, and eye tests on a first-come, first-served basis.
In what looks like something from a disaster movie or refugee camp, thousands of volunteer doctors, nurses, opticians, and dentists work to provide free care to as many people as possible.

Housing
with no property of their own and no possibility of renting, those lucky enough to own one, live in their car.
Many cities have designated Safe parking lots where people living in their cars can sleep, some even have amenities like an outdoor kitchenette or portaloo.
Those who don't have accommodation live on the streets, under bridges or in tents.
In Los Angeles, the number of homeless people has doubled in the last few years, and tents line the streets of downtown L.A.
Outraged by this increase, a man called Elvis has decided to take a stand. He builds small wooden houses and gives them to the homeless, each house is fitted with a locking door and windows, alarms and smoke detectors, and a light and socket that run off a solar panel on the roof and is paid for by online donations. The mayor of Los Angeles has banned him from doing this claiming that it is illegal and if he's caught he will be prosecuted, rather than stop, Elvis avoids getting caught.

so even though there are many people willing to donate, help, volunteer, and fight against poverty, the problem will continue to grow until we change our society, a society that instead of rewarding those who strive to succeed, punishes those who fail.

The Truth About UK Homelessness: It's Not Just About Money and Housing

Subscribe to
The number of homeless people in the UK is on the rise, and the government is allocating a significant amount of money to address the problem.

However, providing housing and distributing food, while important, does not address the root cause.

In order to help these individuals live safely and with human dignity, there is an organization that offers assistance right to the street.

This episode has been filmed in 2019.

Bangladesh: People Struggling to Survive in the Most Overpopulated Country in the World

Hey, have you tried an eSIM? Get US$3 off your first eSIM data pack from Airalo. Use code ILYA6216 when you sign up or apply it at checkout.

Bangladesh is a land of troubles: the water here is black, the traffic is insane, the people are poor, and the metro only goes one way; children don’t go to school, because they have to help their parents earn a living, and men sell their girlfriends to brothels. Bangladesh is also a place where ships from all over the world end their “life”, and where manual labor is so cheap that it is getting scary.

With all the problems of Bangladesh, will I be able to see anything good in this small country in South Asia? Let’s find out!

San Francisco: The GOOD, The BAD, The UGLY (California Documentary)

San Francisco, California — a city so beautiful it’s hard to believe it’s real. Yet at the same time, it is gritty and dystopian, its underbelly fully exposed for the world to see. In this travel documentary, explore the nature and geography of this 7x7 peninsula, take a closer look at the quirky, colorful Victorian architecture and the history behind it, visit one of the most iconic Victorians in town (that looks like the Addam's Family mansion), and walk through the Tenderloin, a complex neighborhood that is ground zero of San Francisco's homeless and drug crisis and home to the city's Southeast Asian immigrants.

INSIDE the MIGRANT CAMPS of Tijuana, Mexico ???????? (Very Emotional)

???? WATCH NEXT: First Day in Russia
???? PLEASE SUBSCRIBE, it helps a ton!
???? GET YOUR TRAVEL DEEPER Shirt:

Tijuana, Mexico is one of the most important cities in North America. It is the gateway into the United States from Latin America, and is home to the world's most trafficked border crossing.

The San Ysidro border crossing in Tijuana, Mexico connects Tijuana with San Diego, California. This border crossing has always been an important social, political, and economic passageway for both US Citizens and our neighbors to the south.

In more recent years, the Tijuana border crossing has been a centerpiece of news coverage all over the globe because of the sheer number of people attempting to get into the United States.

Social, economic and political unrest in Latin countries such as Guatemala, Honduras, El Salvador, Haiti, Cuba, Nicaragua, and other areas around Mexico, have led to a large influx of people trying to seek a better future in the United States.

My biggest goal for coming down to Tijuana, Mexico this week was to experience this unbelievable migrant wave first-hand, and try to explain their story a little bit better than the news does.

Luckily, through Border Tours, we were able to connect with the Migrant Affairs office in downtown Tijuana, and arrange a visit to (just) two of the migrant camps setup here in the Mexican border city.

What I experienced in these migrant camps, still sits with me today...

Please let me know what you think in the comments!

The past few days in Antananarivo, Madagascar have been overwhelming, intense and eye-opening. And I apologize for the delays in posting these videos -- it's been nearly impossible to find decent enough wifi.

Madagascar, as a whole, is a beautiful tropical island with stunning greenery, giant baobab trees and unique wildlife (like lemurs!). It's also massive -- about twice the size of my home state of Arizona -- floating 250 miles off the southeastern part of mainland Africa.

But putting the natural beauty aside, Madagascar is one of the World's poorest countries, with the 5th lowest GDP per capita. Walking on the streets of Antananarivo, I couldn't help but observe and analyze what I was seeing --- people just barely managing to survive, working labor-intensive jobs with very little pay.

My new local friends and I took a mini road trip to some outer villages, where I learned about the daily life of people working in the markets. Here's what I discovered.

If there's any takeaway from today (and through travel in general) -- it is to appreciate the life I live. If you are reading this as well, consider yourself lucky because you have internet, which most of the people in Madagascar cannot afford.

The Harsh Reality: 'Pagpag' - Food from Garbage in the Philippines.

Fried chicken is so popular that the Philippines even have its own fried chicken brand. It’s also a dream food that some poor Filipinos can’t afford in real life.

Low-income earners can only eat chicken bones with bits of meat left. This kind of food from organic waste is called in Tagalog “Pagpag”.

Even if it is not hygienic and dangerous to health, it’s the only way to survive for many poor people in the slums of the Philippines.

This episode has been filmed in May 2017.
