Behind the Image (episode 3) with Jess Findlay

Join me and Jess Findlay as we talk all things photography, his most spectacular Barn Owl image and his journey on becoming a professional wildlife photographer.

Born and raised just outside Vancouver, in Burnaby, British Columbia - an area rich in biodiversity - it didn't take Jess long to spark an interest in the natural world. His childhood was spent hiking and birdwatching with his family, throughout the Pacific Northwest. With help from his father, also an avid hobbyist nature photographer at the time, this interest in the outdoors developed into a passion for artistically documenting living creatures and dramatic landscapes. In 2011, Jess was awarded the International Youth Photographer of the Year award from Nature's Best Photography; prompting him to take this serious hobby to the next level. Since then, Jess has gone on to be awarded in the prestigious BBC Wildlife Photographer of the Year competition, among other accolades. Photography has brought him deep into the backcountry of the Pacific Northwest, the far reaches of the Aleutian Islands, the high Alaskan Arctic, and throughout remote regions of Central and South America. Living in an area with charismatic wildlife rivalled only by the surrounding scenery, Jess has developed a unique style combining elements from both landscape and wildlife photography; creating contextual images that bridge the gap, speaking to both the animal's and environment's story. Equally at home alone in the wilderness or in a group setting sharing his experiences, Jess is eager to continue exploring; raising awareness about the world's incredible natural beauty, as well as guiding photography workshops to help others pursue their passion. Jess' work has been displayed at the Smithsonian Museum of Natural History in Washington DC, the London Natural History Museum in the UK and the Royal British Columbia Museum in Victoria, Canada. He has also lectured at the renowned Annenberg Space for Photography in Los Angeles, California. (Taken from Jess's Website.)

Photography Session 1

-- Learn the secrets to take your best photos.

These are some of the images I´ve captured in photography sessions in the last months.

We, human beings are emotional. Life brings out the best and the worst in us. And all that comes out through the emotions. Photographs are the best way to capture these emotions. And as soon as the emotions are captured in a photograph, they become memories. In fact, some of our best memories are from photographs.

Photographs make us stop and reflect upon those moments that we have already lived. They make us nostalgic and emotional, all at the same time. Birthday parties, weddings, Christmas with family, baby showers, anniversaries, natural disasters etc. whatever might have been the occasion, photos capture them in all their glory. They give us an opportunity to analyze how our lives have changed or remained the same. We can have a look at our lives through them more attentively because they force us to focus on a particular moment.

It is often said that a camera lies. But that's not true. Every moment captured by the camera once existed. Otherwise, how would it have captured. But, there is no shying away from the fact that a camera can interpret. The composition, lightening, angles - all can be interpreted. But, therein lies the beauty of photography and also, its power. It is not accurate but it is real. A photo can inspire some, change the views of some, and shake up the ideals of some, may educate, and may inspire to act and so on. They can invoke the innermost feelings of human beings like fear, anxiety etc.

Photographs not only affect the personal lives. They may also affect the public. For example, the Vietnam war (1965-1975). The images brought back from the war affected the public opinion greatly. In fact, the US army even integrated photo journalists in their combat operations so that they could photograph for them.

In today's modern world, the social media has increased the importance of photos even more. Just consider the example of Facebook. Sharing of photos is the most usual activity there. And, why not? They are the most interesting and powerful way of communicating one's feelings. They allow us to convey something, which might have not been possible through words.

In fact, the importance of photos in one's life is so much that if it is asked of people that what would they rescue from their burning house, most of the times, their answer would be the photo album or the digital images.

They grab our attention like nothing else. And, let's put it this way. With time, our mind becomes fickle and we start forgetting things. The only way we can record them is through pictures. They have been and will remain the best way to store one's memories and emotions. In fact, they are the prized possessions of one's life.

(Part 2) M+ Matters- ARTWORKDOCUMENTATION: Photographing China

ARTWORKDOCUMENTATION, the fourth symposium in the M+ Matters series organised by M+, attempts to unpack the multiple roles that an object (or image) can inhabit — documentation, archive, evidence, historical record, material support — and how these align with our understandings of the work. Inviting specialists and practitioners from diverse backgrounds, ARTWORKDOCUMENTATION looks at the ways in which conceptions about artworks are in flux, and how these shifts — particularly in the institutional context — can engender new ways of thinking about collections, exhibitions and display. The symposium consists of two free public panel discussions, namely Photographing China and Rethinking the Categories of Art and Documentation.

Grace Noh received her M.A. in Art History from New York University Institute of Fine Arts. She not only depicts the passing of time, but also points out the physical and spiritual aspects of the “Irreversible”. Sora received her MFA from Pratt Institute, New York in 2018 and BFA from the School of Visual Arts, New York in 2015.

I have been going to Yosemite for 55 years and lived and worked there for 3 years. This video focuses on my Favorite Photography Locations in Yosemite National Park, specifically Yosemite Valley. All of the locations are very easy to find and many of them you can simply drive to and others are within easy walking distance.

A professional photojournalist since 1979 specializing in travel, landscape and wildlife photography I have traveled to over 80 countries with my camera and notebook in hand. For the past 11 years I have worked and lived on cruise ships traveling the globe. The channel is not just for those traveling by cruise ship, many places I have visited cannot be reached by ship. It is for all travelers regardless of how you reach your destination. My goal is for you to benefit from my experiences, lend advice and answer questions on destinations that you are considering and maybe some that you have not considered.

As far as the photography aspect I have focused on still photography. For you photographers this will give you an idea of some of the images that you can capture at the destination. For you non-photographers this will give you a sneak peek of a destination that maybe you are thinking about and maybe some that you have not thought about.

Bill Krupka: The Storytellers Network Season 3 Episode 6

Storytelling with Former CBS Affiliate Photojournalist and Video Marketing Specialist, Bill Krupka
In this episode, we hear from a storyteller I’ve had the opportunity to personally work with over the years. From the newsroom to the marketing department, Bill Krupka and I have collaborated a FEW times. Bill spent 22 years at a CBS affiliate in a top 40 TV market as a photojournalist. He’s interviewed heads of state. He’s covered – and told the stories – of tragedy, triumph and everything in between. Then he came to work with me in marketing, helping hopeful home buyers navigate their experience.

Today, Bill becomes the subject, a title he’s not always willing to put on, in order to share with The Storytellers Network his storytelling craft, his experiences and tips… in other words, HIS story.

It started for me because I was a gadget guy. I remember back in the 80s when my dad got his first video recorder that used VHS tapes. I liked that technology and being able to record video and sound. Bill Krupka on where his storyteller path began

The Transition from Journalism to Marketing
Bill joined the AmeriFisrt Home Mortgage team I was building... from the TV newsroom. Fortunately he knew me and knew how I worked. But it was still a huge transition. With that many years experience, he wasn't sure he could teach an old dog new tricks. But he went for it, and it worked.

Any transition can be scary... Bill says Just go for it. Even if the pace of work changes, the people change and the work changes, we don't grow in our comfort. We grow through challenging times. As Bill points out, we should move forward so we don't regret what we don't do.

The transition is definitely doable, but it is a different pace. Definitely go for it. I was at a television station for 22 years. I was comfortable. When you first approached me, it was huge. It was a scary thing. What if it falls apart. But I didn't want to look back on my life and go, 'If I had only...' - Bill Krupka and transitioning from one career to another
The Foundation is Important

Technology can help us tell better stories. It can also hinder our growth and make us lazy. From lighter cameras to drones, the tools we use will enhance who we are as storytellers. Bill says the important thing is to keep the basics in mind and to work from a solid foundation. Plus, the job has been done well before the newest technology.

Drones can be great. I think if you utilize them well, they can enhance the story you're trying to tell and give your audience a new perspective. You just have to be careful not to rely only on them. - Bill Krupka on storytelling vs. technology
