How much it costs to live on La Réunion

How much it costs to live on La Réunion

It is time to talk about money or how much it costs to live on La Réunion. I know that the prices on this remotest part of the European Union will be higher than in Germany. Many products however shocked me because many were 4 times as expensive as back home. This is just an overview what I paid however have in mind that my diet may different from yours or that prices are completely different after Covid-times.

Flights
During Covid19 everything changed, planning was a nightmare because you never knew if regulations change and if you are allowed to travel after all. So I booked my flights 3 weeks prior to depature. I paid 440€ for an Air France flight from Paris to La Réunion. October to December usually are the highseason on the island so it could cost easily double in non-pandemic times.

Accomodation
I only lived in AirBnbs because it felt like the most reliable option for me and my limited French skills. The reason why I speak about different prices per night is that I sometimes didn’t include the service fees that apply additional to the price per night that is shown on AirBnb.
If you want to stay in one place for several weeks on the island have a look for Facebook groups. I was part of one for Expats and there cheaper apartments/rooms were shared. The area between Saint Paul and Saint Pierre is the most expensive part. The higher you go the cheaper it gets. The south was pretty cheap compared to the other parts of the island.
Here is what I paid:
Apartment in Boucan Canot just 3 Min walk from the beach 60€/night
Room with bathroom in Saint Gilles-les-Haut with shared pool 32€/night
Apartment in Vincendo with own garden and seaview 26€/night

Car
I organized the car rental before I came to La Réunion but it should be easy to organize a car as soon as you get there. I paid the same as people who organized a car after they arrived. The prices start from 27€/day. I paid 31€ because I didn’t take the smallest car and wanted a full insurance.

Groceries
You get quite a lot of things in the supermarket however the prices are very high because most thing are imported and I heard about a special French fee for oversea departments. Beside the roads there are often stands which sell produce. It is a little bit cheaper there than in the supermarkets but still way more expensive than in Germany. Even the local fruits that have season aren’t cheaper.
Here are the products that were way more expensive than in Germany:
Bell pepper 200g 3€, Toast, 4,5€, Blueberries 7€, pack of cigarettes 11-14€, Sunscreen 300ml 28€, 25 Tide pots 22€, 750ml yoghurt 7€.

Free time activities
The French school was around 360-400€/week depending how long you booked your course for. The dives were around 50€ including all the equipment.

Do you need to speak french to visit La Réunion?

Do you need to speak French on la Réunion? This is a question I will answer in this video as well as what I am doing here.

But first things first. This is not an accurate picture to which amount the people speak French or English on the island. I neither measured anything nor had a look into official numbers. This is only my personal impression after a very short amount of time on the island. I don’t want to judge if it is good or bad if people speak English here or not. I just want to give advice where you might need your French vocabulary.
It could also be different when there is no Corona virus which limits the number of tourists on the island.

I also enjoyed both of my dives at the two diving schools and they tried their best to make my experience as nice as possible. I saw the briefing and debriefing in French as an exercise to practice my newly gained French skills. It was secure for me and will be for non-french divers at all times. I just want to emphasize that an “only French” introduction might not reduce the general nervousness many people have before they dive.
I visit a language school here to learn French because I can not image a nicer place to learn French. I had French already in school but forgot most out of it. It left me with a kind of trauma because I almost had to repeat a class.

Here I am visiting the school DP Langues . I can highly recommend the school (no this is not a paid promotion). I learned a lot and they really have a perfect fitting solution for your current level of French.

What it's like to TRAVEL to La RÉUNION in times of COVID-19

Here are my thoughts on travelling during the COVID-19 crisis:
Travelling in Corona times is difficult and potentially dangerous to you and others, and I had a lot of concerns before I decided to go on my journey. In my opinion short term travels to La Réunion are a no go in times where the virus spreads faster than ever. In my case I moved for 3 month so I decided to go because I could isolate myself before the flight and after my arrival to keep the risk of spreading the virus to a minimum.
You need to be tested within 72hours prior the departure time of your flight and it is highly recommended that you repeat a test within the first week of your arrival.
Travelling to la Réunion is still possible but needs some preparation in advance. Beside the requirements for the flight you also need to think of possible lockdown situations during your stay. How will you supply yourself in case of a closing of all the restaurants? Is your health insurance covering a COVID-19 treatment abroad? Is my accommodation suitable for a lockdown?
With this careful preparation it is possible to move abroad at the moment. If you just plan to go on holiday to La Réunion I would advise you to wait until Corona infections went down again and it is safer and easier to go.
For me it turned out that La Réunion is a lot safer in Corona times than staying in Muni due to its remote location in the Indian ocean and the strict test requirements for travelling here.

YOU DON’T NEED A VISA TO VISIT THIS ISLAND IN FRANCE ????????

So how I am in the European Union without a visa -

Réunion is an island in the Indian Ocean (African Continent) that is a region of France ????????

Earlier you needed a Schengen visa to visit the island, however, the rules have been simplified for us, Indians (for stays of up to 15 days). All you need to do is -

1. Contact a local travel agency that is offering a package tour and they will then contact the agency on Reunion Island with a license to request visa waivers
2. Or apply to an incoming agency on Reunion Island for a visa waiver stamped form

You can reach out to @curated_holidays who arranged this for us ????

La Réunion - Palm Hotel & Spa

MY APARTMENT TOUR! MTV Cribs Style

Here is my apartment on La Réunion.
I found it through AirBnB and it is located in a small village next to the sea called Boucan Canot. It should be one of the best beaches on the island and is located on the westcoast of the island. It was not difficult to find an apartment however it might be a special situation with COVID-19.
There were plenty of offers on AirBnb however most owners don’t speak english. Usually I should not be a problem after the AirBnb-App has an integrated translation feature. I also use it in communication with my host. He writes in French and I answer in English.
The prices vary strongly, and you can find anything between 25€ per night up to 200€. I am travelling during the high season from September to December. The prices for hotel rooms were way higher.
For those who don’t know MTV Cribs is or was a TV show on MTV where celebrities showed their mansions. After grewing up with this show I had to do an apartment tour MTV cribs style. ????

What I hate about La Réunion

To make this clear from the beginning: I don’t hate anything about la Réunion. However this microclimate on the island and the early bird requirements that come with that are not my favourite thing about the island.

Usually the weather is really good during sunrise and often sunset. During the day a lot of cloud form in the mountain area so you need to get up quite early to enjoy the nice viewpoints. It is totally worth it!

My first destination was Maïdo one of the most popular viewpoints on La Réunion. A good spot for the sunrise and to get an overview of the beautiful Mafate caldera.

The second hike was at Cap Noir which is a round way on the north side of the Mafate caldera. I liked it even more than Maïdo because the sunlight comes from the side and not from the front as it is on Maïdo.
The last hike was at la Fenêtre des Makes from where you should have a nice view into the Cilaos caldera. On the day I was there (at 10 am) the clouds were already there.

Of course the weather is different depending on the season and it is not like that everyday. My guide book however recommend to start the hikes the latest at 7am. Usually you need to drive 60-90 minutes from St.Paul area to the most popular spots that I visited. That leads to departure times of 5.30-6am.

Sunset is even earlier. On the day I visited Maïdo the sunset was at 5.17am. Something I wouldn’t get up for every weekend. But it was great to see it once.

Lost on the hiking tracks of La Réunion

Today I want to talk about the adventures I had while hiking on La Réunion. I found my hikes mostly on . They have some good information but some hikes seemed to be outdated und not maintained anymore.

This ended in me having the most challenging hike of 28km and 9 hours of walking. It was called “Le sentier littoral de Saint Philippe au Tremblet” and parts of it were beautiful, but the second half was not that special but very long. I can only recommend to have a look at the comments to get more information about the latest conditions of the track.

The forest walk was in Forêt de Belouve and I can highly recommend the hike and even the drive there was nice. The waterfall is called Cascade Langevin.
