I’ve been wanting to make this video since I crossed the finish line into my 197th and final country - SAUDI ARABIA! It took me 10 years of nonstop travel to achieve this goal!

Having just graduated from UC Berkeley, he traveled to every country in the world for the thrill of being able to plan out every part of the trip – including routes, visas, accommodations, and even booking 100 plane tickets BEFORE the trip even started – leaving little room for error!
When Indy Nelson finished his journey, he was the youngest (24 years old) and fastest to visit every country in the world (539 days). Want to know how much it would cost you to see every country in the world on one continuous trip? Because Indy kept detailed notes on how much he spent in those 539 days and shares with us the cost!

Part 176 - Two Days in Karakol - World Cycle Tour 2018
Saturday 8th and Sunday 9th September.
Two Days in Karakol.
We used some time here to prepare the bicycles for our flight next week and other practical stuff like getting a haircut etc.
Then it was time for the real reason for visiting Karakol - enjoying cake and cappuccino in Fat Cat Cafe. It is not easy to find real coffee and cake in Central Asia so we have been told about this place by other travelers.
We then saw a few of the sights.
On Sunday we had a few more things to prepare with our bikes and then it was back to Fat Cat Cafe for the whole afternoon. We were lucky that our friends John and Fern that we have met a few places now were also in Karakol. So we had a nice afternoon with them sharing stories from the road.
Tomorrow we are crossing the border to Kazakhstan and driving to the city of Almaty in a taxi van.

대서양에서 태평양까지! 미대륙을 기차로 횡단하는 총 5,467km의 여정! 로키산맥을 넘어 네바다의 평원을 지나며 장엄한 대륙의 경관을 볼 수 있다. 미대륙 횡단열차가 놓여진지 올해로 150년. 그 세월에 담긴 미국의 역사와 문화도 만나본다. 전 세계 여행자들의 꿈! 미대륙 횡단 기차 여행을 시작해 보자! 인천공항을 출발해 14시간 후 뉴욕에 도착했다. 미대륙 횡단열차의 출발점인 뉴욕 맨해튼. 나는 기차를 타기 앞서 먼저 역에서 가까운 타임스 스퀘어 거리를 둘러보기로 했다. 뉴욕의 중심지 타임스 스퀘어는 즐거운 분위기가 넘친다. 뉴욕 맨해튼의 남동쪽에는 이스트 빌리지라는 곳이 있다. 이곳은 유럽에서 온 이민자들이 모여 살던 곳인데, 100년 넘은 노포들을 곳곳에서 볼 수 있다. 이스트 빌리지의 명소 중 하나인 한 맥줏집. 무려 165년이나 된 가게다. 아일랜드에서 온 한 이민자가 문을 열었는데, 링컨 대통령도 이곳에서 맥주를 마셨다고 한다. 160년 동안 뉴욕은 상전벽해로 변했지만 이 집은 예전의 모습을 그대로 간직하고 있다. 사람들은 고향에서 마시던 진한 맥주 한 잔으로 이민생활의 고달픔과 향수를 달랬을 것이다. 맥줏집 바로 앞에는 큰 교회가 하나 있다. 우크라이나 가톨릭교회다. 마침 이 날이 성모승천대축일이어서 미사가 진행 중이었다. 19세기 중반 유럽에서 이민자들이 대거 이주했을 때 넘어온 우크라이나 사람들이 뉴욕에 정착촌을 형성했고, 이곳은 ‘리틀 우크라이나’로 불리고 있다. “이분 이름은 나탈리아 보고슬라바인데요 직접 작사 작곡해서 노래해요. 성모 마리아, 예수, 성인들에 대한 노래들을 많이 작곡했어요.” 보고슬라바 씨는 자신이 지은 우크라이나 어 성가를 들려주었다. “성모 마리아께서 잠드셨네. 성모 마리아께서 잠드셨네.” 펜실베이니아 역에서 시카고행 기차를 타고 대륙횡단 여행을 시작한다. 장거리 여행객들이 많이 이용하는 2인용 침대칸은 무척이나 좁다. 위쪽의 침대를 밀어 올려 2층으로 만드는 구조다. 신기한 건 이 좁은 공간에 화장실이 따로 있다는 거다. 기차는 허드슨강을 따라 북쪽으로 달려 다음날 아침 시카고에 도착한다. 한 부부를 만났다. 둘 다 은퇴를 했는데, 15일 동안 기차로 미국 횡단 여행을 한다고 한다. 가방 안에는 손주들에게 줄 선물이 가득하다. “이건 버펄로예요.” “어디서 사셨어요?” “옐로스톤에서요. 이건 무스 인형. 다른 손주는 지금 이글 스카우트예요. 그래서 그 아이를 위해 지팡이를 샀어요. 숲속을 다니니까요.” “둘이 대화를 많이 하고요, 함께 창밖을 바라보며 아무 말 하지 않고 있어도 좋아요. 남편은 영화를 보고, 저는 사진을 찍기도 하지요. 남편이 헝클어놓은 사진들을 제가 정리하기도 하고요.” “저는 사진을 많이 찍는데, 아내가 알아서 삭제해 주죠.” “맞아요. 이렇게.” 저녁 시간이 되자 사람들이 식당칸에 모여든다. 객실에 가져가서도 먹을 수 있게 포장해 주는데, 식단은 소박한 편이다. 파스타나 스테이크 같은 메뉴에 빵과 샐러드, 커피가 곁들여진다. 기차에서 도시락을 먹는 딱 그 느낌이다. 다음날 아침 10시경. 뉴욕을 떠난 지 19시간 만에 일리노이 주 시카고에 도착했다. 뉴욕이나 시카고 같은 대도시는 기차 플랫폼이 지하에 있어 나오는데 시간이 좀 걸린다. 짐이 많거나 몸이 불편한 사람은 전동차를 탈 수 있다. 시카고는 미국 철도의 중심부인데, 기차역 역시 미국에서 가장 아름다운 역 중 하나로 꼽힌다. 웅장한 르네상스 양식으로 지어져 박물관 같은 느낌이 든다. 시카고 갱 알카포네를 다룬 영화 언터쳐블의 계단 총격 장면도 여기에서 촬영됐다. 시카고에 도착한 날이 금요일이었는데, 마침 프로야구 경기가 진행되고 있었다. 내셔널리그 중부지구의 라이벌인 시카고 컵스와 밀워키 브루어스와의 경기다. 경기장 앞은 잔디밭으로 돼 있는데, 사람들은 여기서 경기를 보며 즐거운 시간을 보낸다. 시카고가 6대 1로 앞선 8회말, 시카고의 5번 타자 카일슈와버 선수가 솔로 홈런을 터뜨렸다! 시카고와 밀워키는 중부지구에서 2,3위를 다투는 라이벌이지만, 이날은 시카고 컵스의 일방적인 우세였다. 결국 컵스가 7:1로 완승을 거뒀다. “정말 기분 좋아요! 여기 오느라 잠도 잘 못 잤지만 정말 즐거워요.” 경기장은 축제분위기로 변한다. 사람들은 서로 포옹하고 어깨춤을 추며 승리를 만끽한다. 경기가 있는 날은 주변 도로의 차량이 통제된다. 시카고 하면 마이클 조던의 시카고 불스가 전설이지만, 야구 열기 또한 대단했다.
