How To Road Trip California, Be Cheap, And Still Have A Good Time

After finishing my California Road Trip video this summer, I realized I still had a lot of extra footage that I hadn’t used. So I decided to put it to good use in a new video. This video is the result: How to Road Trip California. It’s more of a narrative and slower in style than its predecessor, but I’m hoping you still like it. Here’s a link to the first video if you haven’t seen it:

Many people ask, “How much will it cost to road trip California? “What are the best places in California to visit?” and “Where is the best food?. The answers to those questions depend on a lot of different factors. California has so much to offer. To truly experience the whole state could take over a month. And you still wouldn’t see everything. Time, money, and personal preference should all be considered. My main question wasn’t as much “How to Road Trip California” as it was “How can I explore California in one week, with two friends, a camera, and a modest budget?”

I think I answered it.

AFFILIATE LINK DISCLOSURE: Friends, making a quality Loloho video is kind of like making sausage – only slightly more violent. It's a ridiculous amount of work that typically involves high dollar camera drops, blue-screen-of-death computer crashes, and at least one angry shotgun wielding old man shouting, “Hey! Get the hell outta here!” Once the final video is posted, rewards here on YouTube are few and far between (unless you are a masochist who enjoys being verbally abused by anonymous trolls). One saving grace is our affiliate links. JUST CLICKING THESE LINKS HELPS TO SUPPORT OUR LITTLE SHOW. Think of this clicking as like tipping - except that it doesn't cost you anything extra! If you eventually make a purchase via one of our affiliate links, we will receive a few pennies (and Sean typically invests these pennies in duct tape and video gear). Again, it doesn't cost you anything to click these links, and it's a great help to us. As always, safe travels, happy camping, and THANK YOU!

2 Week Road Trip in California

Our first time in the Golden State was beyond impressive. We took a 2 week workation back in May of 2021. We spent the weekdays exploring the big cities and the weekends camping in the national parks.
During the weekdays, we would wake up early (since both of us worked in EST) and be done by 2PM. We used the rest of the day to explore the cities and dine out somewhere nice for dinner.
During the first weekend we camped in Lodgepole Campground in Sequoia National Park and spend the weekend exploring the beautiful Sequoia and Kings Canyon National Parks.
The second weekend we camped just outside of Yosemite NP and had the most amazing time in the middle of the stunning landscapes in the Yosemite Valley.
Not everything we explored was covered in this video.
See below for our stays and brief itinerary:
*** Day 1-3 (San Diego) ***
Things we did:
- Little Italy
- La Jolla Cove
- Coronado Beach and Hotel
- Gaslamp Quarter (Lively neighborhood with great nightlife)
- USS Midway Museum
- Old Town
- Carlsbad (Flower Field) on our way to LA

Stayed at The Horton Grand Hotel in Gaslamp Quarters

***Day 3-6 (Los Angeles)***
- Dine at Sunset Strip
- Rodeo Drive
- Hollywood Boulevard (Dolby and Chinese Theaters, etc.)
- Dinner in downtown LA
- Rodeo Drive
- Beverley Hills
- Drove through Bel Air (this was actually our favorite part of LA, but unfortunately we didn't have any footages to share)
- Santa Monica (Another favorite spot in LA)

Stayed in an Airbnb in Beverley Hills, which was super conveniently located.
Check it out here:

***Day 7 - 8 (Sequoia & Kings Canyon NP)****
There are multiple 1 or 2 day itineraries available online to cover both these national parks, we just followed some of them
- General Grant Grove
- Zumwalt Meadows
- General Sherman Trail
- Moro Rock Trail

There are other more challenging and scenic trails in this beautiful NP and we would definitely recommend checking them out.

Stayed at Lodgepole Campground and this was one of the most surreal experiences camping under the stars at night. Highly recommend this campground (be sure to check it out well in advance of your trip as space is limited)

***Day 9-10 (Monterey/Carmel by the Sea/ Big Sur)***
- Princess Monterey Whale Watching Tour
- Refuge Spa in Carmel (We absolutely loved this, unfortunately filming is not allowed here)
- 17 mile drive (recommend doing this around sunset)
- Lovers Point beach (some great restaurants with a view near this spot)
- Took the drive down south to Big Sur along the pacific coast highway (absolute must do) and dine at the Nepanthe restaurant when you're there

Stayed at a Red Roof Inn at Monterey as everything else in this area is super pricey. (

***Day 11-12 (San Fransisco)***
We couldn't get a whole lot done in SFO as they were following strict protocols and half the city was shut at that time
- Golden Gate Bridge
- Steep Roads
- Drove around the silicon valley and stopped by the HQs of tech giants such as Facebook, Google, Apple, Microsoft, etc.
- Tried some of the Indian restaurants in San Jose as we were craving it after 2 weeks of other cuisines
- Union Square
- The Escape Game (Escape Room near Union Square) - Highly recommend this one if you're into it.

We stayed at Cornell Hotel de France , which was super boutique and located close to most of the main attractions in the city. We thoroughly enjoyed our stay here.
Give it a look here :

***Day 13-15 (Yosemite National Park)***
- Most things we did here was covered in the video. A quick google search will give you a myriad of options on how to schedule your trip around here.
This was arguably our favorite part of the trip. Yosemite was a bucket list item for the both of us and we are so glad that we were able to knock it off.

We camped at the Yosemite Lakes RV Resort.
Note: This is not a part of the NPS campgrounds but we were too late to get a reservation in one of the official ones.
