How The World's Largest Community Kitchen Feeds 100,000 Daily At Golden Temple, India | Big Batches

This is the largest free kitchen in the world. Open 24 hours, year round, this food hall feeds 100,000 people for free each day. And on religious holidays that number can double.

Just one of these huge bowls is enough to feed around 10,000 people.

We visited Amritsar in India to find out everything that goes into feeding such a large crowd, and to see just what it takes to make such Big Batches.

How Sikh Chefs Feed 100,000 People At The Gurudwara Bangla Sahib Temple In New Delhi, India

Open 24 hours a day, 365 days a year, the Gurudwara Bangla Sahib temple in New Delhi, India, feeds 30,000 to 40,000 people every day for free. And during religious holidays, that number can swell to well over 100,000. To keep up with demand, the kitchen uses machines to help cook a majority of its food.

We visited the temple during the birth anniversary of the 10th guru, Gobind Singh, to see how it prepares a celebratory feast in such big batches.

Inside the WORLD'S LARGEST Community Kitchen (Golden Temple, Amritsar)

Punjabi and Hindi subtitles are available ❤️

In this video of Living the Jo life, we visit Amritsar in the state of Punjab in northern India, which is the center of India’s Sikh community. Amritsar is located only 30 km from the Pakistan border. To enter the famous Golden Temple (also known as the Harimandir Sahib or Darbar Sahib), which is the holiest gurudwara in Sikhism, you need to cover your hair. We first found some scarves for Kylie and Ella and then a turban for Kasper. To get to the Golden Temple, we walked down the Heritage Street and Golden Temple Road, which are busy shopping streets with lots of stores and side streets with markets. When entering the Golden Temple complex, you are greeted with a stunning view of the Golden Temple, which is surrounded by the holy water of the square pool. As part of the complex, you will find the Langar Hall, a community kitchen that feeds over 100,000 people every day. It was so heartwarming to experience the generosity, selflessness, community spirit, unity, and tireless efforts of volunteers helping out preparing and cooking the food, dishing up the food, and washing up all the dishes. It was such an amazing and unforgettable experience to witness first-hand the kindness and compassion of humanity, which embody the Sikh principle of equality. The Golden Temple complex is a site not to be missed, and it should be on every traveler’s bucket list.

How 5 Tonnes Of Sweet Rice (Zarda) Is Cooked In The World's Largest Cauldron In India | Big Batches

The Ajmer Sharif Dargah in Rajasthan, India, is one of the holiest Sufi sites in the world. There, devotees cook a sweet rice dish in a deg, or cauldron, for the thousands of pilgrims who visit the shrine each day. The cauldron is one of the largest in the world, measuring 37 feet wide and 15 feet deep, with a capacity to cook 4,800 kilograms. We visited the shrine to see how these devotees prepare their prasad, or religious offering, in such big batches.

The Kitchen Serving 40,000 People a Day

With one of the largest kitchens in Asia, the Shri Saibaba temple in Shirdi, India, prepares, cooks and serves quantities of food that are nearly unimaginable. The kitchen dishes out as many as 40,000 meals per day, every day, all year long. It takes 600 people working in two daily shifts to prepare all this food. Yet despite all the effort, meals are free to the public. Why? The temple believes that those who are hungry deserve to be fed, and those who are thirsty deserve to be given a drink.

How 150,000 People Are Fed For Onam In Kerala, India | Big Batches | Insider Food

Onam is a 10-day harvest festival celebrated in Kerala, India. It marks the first month of the Malayalam calendar and commemorates the return of the mythical King Mahabali from the underworld to his home in Kerala.Mahabali's return and the harvest are celebrated with floral artwork, traditional dances, boat races, and a traditional feast known as the Onam sadya.

The feast has 15 to 20 distinct dishes, but in some cases, it can have as many as 40. All of the dishes are served on banana leaves and eaten by hand. Eaters use rice as the vehicle for forming the perfect bite. While the traditions of Onam are rooted in Hinduism, Keralites across the state, regardless of religion and caste, enjoy the festivities and a traditional meal.

We visited Vinayaka Caterers in Kerala, India, to see how it prepares sadyas for 150,000 people.

World's Biggest Free Kitchen #288

#shorts

The Golden Temple - Amritsar | World's biggest Kitchen serves 100,000 people DAILY! | Punjab, India.

The Harmandir Sahib is an open house of worship for all men and women, from all walks of life and faith. It has a square plan with four entrances, has a circumambulation path around the pool. The temple is a collection of buildings around the sanctum and the pool. One of these is Akal Takht, the chief center of the religious authority of Sikhism. Additional buildings include a clock tower, the offices of the Gurdwara Committee, a Museum and langar – a free Sikh community run kitchen that serves a simple vegetarian meal to all visitors without discrimination. Over 100,000 people visit the holy shrine daily for worship. The temple complex has been nominated as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and its application is pending on the tentative list of UNESCO.

The best months to visit would be between October and March. But if you hesitate to visualize yourself in multiple layers of clothing, you could skip planning an Amritsar trip in December and January!

Depending on your level of religious fervor, any time is a good time of day to visit. If you are the kind who wishes to avoid getting into endless queues, then an early morning at 4 AM or late at night are great times to go to the temple.

There is accommodation available right next to the temple complex for those who are looking at a quick entry and exit type of visit.
