How Safe Is Guatemala for Travel?

Full safety review:

Guatemala is a country located in the Central American region.

It shares borders with Mexico to the north/northwest, with Belize to the northeast, with Honduras to the southeast, and El Salvador to the south.

It boasts two coastlines: a Pacific coastline in the southwest and a tiny patch of Caribbean coastline in the east, so apart from historically-motivated tourists, Guatemala is the perfect place for summer lovers.

It’s rich in culture and history stemming from Spain and the native Maya people which calls for hordes of tourists each year.

No other country has a history like that.

Overall Guatemala is not the safest country to visit. It has extremely high crime rates, of both violent and petty crime. You should be vigilant and take all possible precaution measures in order to minimize the risk of something wrong happening.

Solo in Guatemala's Most Violent Cartel Hood! (Zone-18)????????

Guatemala City is divided into different zones. The biggest and most violent is Zone 18. It is fully controlled by gang members (Mara 18) and every local I asked warned me not to visit this place at all. Not even its small central market.
I fully respect their advice which is for my own good, but I am very curious to see with my own eyes what this Hood Cartel looks like and most importantly what the locals there have to say about the most dangerous place in Guatemala City.

Let's see.....

Starting in Plaza Mayor, we'll be surrounded by a swarm of activity - an electrifying vortex of energy that will leave you breathless. And that's just the beginning, folks.

We'll soon find ourselves in the throes of Mercado Central, a marketplace that pulsates with life and color. So brace yourselves, for this is where the true soul of Guatemala resides.

As we weave through the crowds, you'll notice something peculiar - the warmth of the people here is simply unparalleled.

Whether it's the vendors hawking their wares or the locals going about their day, Guatemalans' friendly and hospitable nature is unmistakable.

And let's remember the sheer diversity of this city - from the eye-catching architecture to the street art that seems to spring up everywhere you look. It's like a living, breathing canvas, a visual feast for the senses.

And so, as we approach our final destination, La Linea, remember this - Guatemala is a country of many wonders. Still, the friendliness of its people is truly second to none.

What's going on in Guatemala? Coup d'etat? Protests? What you should know / Guatemala 2023

We go to the front line in the national protests, talk to Guatemalans to hear their opinions and explain a little about the roots of this upset.

Amidst the vibrant pulse of Guatemala, a movement awakens, shaking the very foundations of the land. A chorus of voices, resonating with a yearning for justice, echoes through the streets. The people, with fiery determination in their hearts, demand accountability and reform from their government.

The catalyst for this uprising was the confiscation of voting ballots, coupled with the accusation that the president-elect Bernardo Alavéro political party was not legitimate meaning he may not be able to take office in January, and a budget bill that slashed education and healthcare spending while increasing funding for politicians' expenses.

The people have called for the resignation of Attorney General Consuelo Porras as well as three others in the administration, accusing them of corruption and mismanagement. The government's response, a heavy-handed approach, has only fueled the flames of this movement, with riot police being deployed and a state of emergency being declared in some areas.

The protesters' tireless efforts have garnered global attention and support, with many expressing solidarity with the Guatemalan people in their fight against government corruption and impunity. As the situation continues to unfold, the ultimate outcome remains unclear. However, one thing is certain: the people of Guatemala will not rest until they have secured a better future for themselves and their country. A future of justice, transparency, and prosperity.

DIRTY & DANGEROUS! Historic GUATEMALA CITY is NOT beautiful like some might say...

Some Youtubers purposely paint a misleading impression of a place to please locals and gain likes / new subscribers. This can lead to somebody watching and then paying thousands to travel across the world, only to have their holiday / vacation ruined when they realize the video that persuaded them to visit said location was nothing but smoke and mirrors. Always be sure to investigate a place inside out so you can make an informed decision. There's way too many Youtubers sugar coating places these days (for their own personal growth of their channel).

On a side note, the everyday people of Guatemala City I met were genuinely very kind and sincere. It's the homeless people of Guatemala City who are wasted out of their minds on alcohol or drugs at all hours of the day (including sunrise) who totally ruin the atmosphere and sense of safety in the historic centre. Surrounding streets are not so safe and are plastered in graffiti. Go in numbers if you do venture into zone 1 and take caution at all times with yourself and your valuables.

This video is probably easier to watch that have me describe in here / why I came away with slightly dissapointed feelings about the historic centre of Guatemala City. Thank god for my stunning Airbnb; that place was my hide away retreat when it all because too much.
