Cuban Santeria: The Way of the Saints

Despite its many practitioners, Santeria is difficult to see first-hand – Santeria priestesses are often wary of foreigners. It was very unusual that they allowed a camera into this secret ceremony.

Most Cubans are Catholic. Many also believe in Santeria, a syncretic religion that was brought to Cuba with the slave trade. Santeria customs include sacred drumming, animal sacrifice, and trance-like state that is used for communicating with their ancestors and deities.

Santeria isn’t just a religion – it’s a reflection of the Cuban personality.

Born of resistance and survival - and now a celebration.

RAMADAN MUBARAK to all of my Muslim brothers and sisters out there!

As a Jewish traveler, you might find it shocking to hear that I have a deep love and appreciation for the Islamic world. After all, the world about 26% of the world is Muslim, so if you are going to every country, then you will spend your fair share being immersed in the religion.

In today's video, I want to bring back 3 special stories about Islam that I've discovered on my travels. The first one is about how my friend Sal, who I recently met in Senegal, reverted to Islam -- the second one is about spending Ramadan in the Maldives -- and the third is about how converting to Islam saved a young French girl named Justine.

Does Islam play a role in your life? If so, I'd love to hear it in the comments below!

Have you ever heard of the Baháʼí Faith? It's considered as the world's newest major religion, and it's absolutely fascinating to learn about.

I actually first heard about the Baháʼí Faith 5 years ago when I stumbled upon a beautiful Baháʼí temple in Delhi, India -- and over the years as I've met more Baháʼís, I've become intrigued by their beliefs and way of life.

In today's video, you will learn all about the Baháʼí Faith through exclusive interviews with Rainn Wilson, Steve Sarowitz and Radiance Talley -- three amazing Baháʼís who I've really enjoyed speaking with.

Just out of curiosity - how many of you guys have heard about the Baháʼí Faith before this video? Do any of you guys agree with their beliefs? Please comment below - I'd love to hear from you!

DO'S and DON'TS in Thailand

If you are travelling to Bangkok, Thailand, taking the time to learn about the culture is very important and appreciated by the locals. By watching this video, you are on the right track to understanding Thai Culture!

We are here to give you the most important Do’s and don’ts in Thailand.

In this video we explain you 10 do's and don'ts for when you are visiting Thailand! These cultural tips will get you started when you just arrive in Thailand or your trip to Asia.

by Co van Kessel Bangkok Tours.

Looking for an authentic and unique adventure? Co van Kessel bike tours and boat tours provides a refreshing alternative to the tired tourist experience. We do not battle the crowds at clichéd destinations promoted in guide books, but turn your attention to quaint local communities and charming excursions into the fascinating lifestyle and culture of real Thai people. Every day is different and every tour is a surprise as we focus not on destinations, but lose ourselves in the enchantment of the journey itself.

Co van Kessel, an innovative and adventurous Dutchman, pioneered bicycle tours in Bangkok more than 30 years ago. As a longtime resident and self-professed lover of Bangkok, he understood very well the picture of accelerated urban development (gridlocked traffic, concrete towers, and choking pollution) that has plagued the recent image of the city. He also had a hunch that this was not what Bangkok or Thailand was all about.

Making it his goal to re-discover Bangkok, Co spent thousands of hours on his mountain bike exploring the vast network of local streets, alleyways, footpaths and canals between the main urban thoroughfares. What he found, lurking behind the facade of modernization, were hidden worlds of peace and tranquility, a picture of “real” Thai life that has remained unchanged for countless decades; an identity of a city that is true to the Thai people, yet largely unknown to outsiders.

Whether it’s the colorful sights and smells of the local markets, the fascinating life of locals along the canals, or the surprising existence of bountiful green belts, Co discovered the essence of what makes Bangkok one of Asia’s most captivating cities. Since then, it has been his mission to share these discoveries with the rest of the world.

What we do

Our mission at Co van Kessel Bangkok Tours is to provide our guests with a singularly unique travel experience in Thailand. All our tours use Co’s extensive topographical knowledge of the greater Bangkok area as well as his keen eye for the interesting to take you where nobody else can or will.

We aim not to bore you with talk, but to immerse you in an experience where your individual fascinations emerge.

Bicycles, boats, and our feet become the tools we use to gain access to the previously inaccessible, behind-the-scenes lifestyle of the Thai. Here the roots of an ancient culture will become evident in a way you never could have imagined.

Western tourists turn to Hinduism, change religion at Maha Kumbh, Allahabad

Conversion in Hinduism? We didn't think so either...

The series of mantras and spectators were curious but unquestioningly welcome Mathew to their religion now he is to be given a new name Mathew becomes Mahindra Kumar Sharma. In less than two hours the Canadian Christian has converted himself into a Hindu. Like all religious festivals, the Kumbh also means different things to different people for some it is all about piety, some come to enjoy the carnival spirit for others it's a chance to renewal trance and meditation and many see it as a Woodstock experience.

It is this free interpretation that makes the Kumbh more than just a confluence of sacred rivers. In the coming together of travellers from across India and the world, the Mela in effect becomes the confluence of beliefs, cultures and philosophies from all over the world. Whether it was the Beatles or Gian Pietro Marcella from Italy the mystical and spiritual of India have always remained the tantalizing attraction for the westerners. Gian Pietro came to India eight years ago after an accident that left him paralyzed one of the few things that remained with him was his experience in this country so addictive, so hypnotic he is drawn to it time and again.

Japan The Way of Zen : Zen Buddhism Documentary

Pierre Brouwers has travelled the length and breadth of Honshu – the largest of the islands forming Japan – to provide an in-depth discovery of the “land of the rising sun”. Cities like Kyoto and Hiroshima are fascinating for their history. Everywhere, traditions are very carefully preserved, especially when it comes to festivals. But these days robots have largely replaced workers on car assembly lines and the younger generations lap up the innovations of the 21st century. The population, one of the world’s most dense, finds its balance in the words wisdom and harmony. Not forgetting the word that is the key to it all, Zen.
