BIKES FOR BIKEPACKING - how I set up my bike after 75,000 kilometres

In this video, I go through my bicycle setup for bikepacking and bike touring and talk about what makes a good bike for going out on bike trips. It can be difficult to know how to choose a bike for bikepacking, as there are so many choices, but this video should be useful for both beginners and advanced riders. I run through my complete set of component choices and offer several tips and tricks for improving your bike setup, making it more capable, reliable, and comfortable.

I've been cycling around the world since 2015, covering around 75,000 kilometres (46,000 miles) through 71 countries. In that time I've had three different bicycles, but my current bike is by far my favourite. See below for the full list of specifications, and check the various links for more information.

*** If you would like more help with any aspect of bikepacking, I do offer a consulting/coaching service, generally on a 1 to 1 basis. For more information:

How to use TFL London Cycle Hire - Santander Cycles

The London Cycle Hire scheme is a great and affordable way to get around London. Joolz shows you how to use them in this video and gives some helpful tips on what not to do.
Most Londoners call them Boris Bikes after Boris Johnson who was the mayor of London when the scheme was initiated and they have sponsors who change periodically. At time of filming it was called the Santander Cycle Hire scheme or Santander Cycles.
If you do it right you only have to pay two pounds to hire it for 24 hours but you must only use it in 30 minute stages unless you want to be charged more money. Each 30 minutes is free but if you don't dock it you get charged another £2 per 30 minutes. If you like these guides do please subscribe to the youtube channel and sign up for more at the website!

How Much Motorcycle Gear Do You Really Need?

The Essential Guide to Any Motorcycle Traveler - Online Course:

What is the most important motorcycle gear?

With this video I will probably hurt some feelings, especially to gear lovers, but I will take that risks. I want to share with you my personal experience and I hope that you will listen. Stay with me!
So the idea for this video came from one picture of funny comics that I found in internet. I upload it in Facebook and Instagram and we had a lot of fun. Many people recognized themselves in this funny cartoon.
What is shows actually is guy who just bought engine guard, mounted and find out that there is more protection for light, side panels, crash bars and decided to order everything converted the bike to a real tank. Anyway, you can see it in my Instagram anytime.
Yes, it is funny, but actually I have some close friends, who do exactly the same all the time. I keep saying: “Stop buying and start riding”, but they just don’t listen. They are what they are!
What I want to do now is to stop you before you become that person! If you already are, I respect your choice, but please go and watch something else, I have about 300 videos in the channel, this one is just not for you. Anyway, let’s go to the point, how much gear we actually need? Good question, is in it?
I will never believe someone who talks about healthy food, but is always sick, to a fat fitness instructor, or poor man talking for business success. I always thought that when we want to convince somebody, the best way is to show some personal examples. That’s why I decided to show you what I have and use all the time and I hope that this will help you to take the right decisions.

How to Carry Bikes Inside Your RV - the Bike Gurney!

If you have questions about this, you can check out the full write-up and ask away, on our website, here:

I've tried lots of ways to transport our bicycles *inside* our RV. This one is by far the easiest, and the best thing I've come up with for it. Basically, it's a gurney that you secure the bikes to while they're outside, and then you roll the whole enchilada inside the RV. We even use the gurney for bike storage when they're outside the RV.

It's super easy, and not too difficult to build if you're handy. I've got a couple more notes for building one on our website - linked above.

10 Tips to Prepare any Motorcycle for Long Trips

The Essential Guide to Any Motorcycle Traveler - Online Course:

Let's see what I have to check now…engine, antifreeze, oil, tires…do I really need this? Not really! In this video, I will tell you 10 tips that will help you prepare any motorcycle for a long trip, stay with me!
The very first thing you have to do is to ask yourself a few questions: Where the trip will be, how long and on what terrains? Are you going to sleep in the tent or you will book hotels? When you know the answers you will have a clear idea of what you will really need. For example on a long trip, more than 10,000km you have to change the oil, the tires and maybe to carry some spare parts.
On the other hand on the weekend trips, you can go with only your credit card and you will be okay. This will help you to prepare the bike and the luggage more efficiently and stop wasting time and money for things that you don't really need.
No more talks let's go to the tips:
1. Service the bike before the trip
I cannot stress enough how important this is! Everything you do before the trip will help you during the trip. It is that simple and still cannot get why some riders miss it!
2. Spare parts
This is something that will require you to have at least some basic knowledge of your motorcycle. Learn it now so you don't need to do it later. The manuals are usually a very good starting point but you can always find more than enough information online.
3. Comfort is everything
That's right, the comfort is everything! It is so important not only for your ass, as you might think at the moment but also for your safety.
4. Navigation
No doubts that on a trip the navigation is something very important. It doesn't matter what option you will choose to use, a proper GPS or your telephone make sure that you set it properly. The right position has to be as high as possible right in front of your eyes without blocking the road of course.
5. Luggage
With the luggage options, you will find so many different opinions and what is most important is that they all will be right. What you will choose will depend only on you and the type of trips that you plan to have.
6. Safety
I told you once that safety is just an illusion and I will stay behind my words but there are a couple of things that you can do to improve your safety on the road.
7. Motorcycle security
To protect your motorcycle is very important, especially when you travel abroad. You have to do your best to protect it because no one will do it for you. Because it is a long discussion I will recommend to go and watch a video that I made a long time ago. The audio is terrible but the information is priceless. You can watch it here.
8. Plan the route carefully
I talk about this in many videos but I will do it again! Make a plan and follow it. I don't mean to be so strict with all traffic lights and exactly the km but you should have a basic idea of how the trip will be executed. Don't listen so call experts that will tell you to go without any plans in the name of the adventure. This could finish very badly for many of you!
9. Make a backup plan
Having a backup is equally important as the main plan. This will give you peace of mind if something goes wrong and you don't have to stick without any idea what to do now.
10. Double-check everything
Yes, this will be my final tip, go and double-check everything and I will repeat again: Everything you do before the trip will help you during the trip!

Motorcycle Crash Bars, Crash Protectors – Are they really worth it?

Motorcycle Crash Protectors – How to choose the right model?

The Essential Guide to Any Motorcycle Traveler - Online Course:

Let’s talk about the motorcycle crash bars – do they really worth it? Well, the answer is yes and no! It’s really depends from the bike and from the accident. I don’t have a simple answer for you, but I can tell you what I think, stay with me!
The usual advice will be – if you plan to travel the world, you definitely will need it. In the case of accident they will protect your bike from serious damages. That statement could be truth, but also could be totally wrong.

There are few types of motorcycle crash bars:

Sliders – they are usually recommended for sport bikes. They are massive metal cylinders, or another shape, mounted to the frame or to the engine and idea behind is that if you slide down they will keep the important parts of your motorcycle untouched.

The second type, much bigger then sliders and they are made from bended pipes. Designed to protect the engine, the radiator or cylinder heads. There are many different options, sizes and models. The most famous is on GS 1200 boxers.

The third type, more likely to be used on adventure bikes. They are design to protect the engine, but also the sides of your motorcycle. You can find many videos and picture evidences that they really work. There hundreds of brand and models on the market so you can choose the one you like the most.

There is another one type, in last few years become more popular; mostly after the new GS 1200 Adventure was launched. It’s combination between the bottom and the top part. The idea is to protect your motorcycle from any crash. You can see it now on new Honda Africa Twin and on KTM adventure as well.
