Entering DUBAI during COVID-19: What does it look like to arrive in Dubai during the pandemic?

IMPORTANT:
As the situation remains dynamic, always refer to the most updated information before your travel. Here is the link for the COVID-19 travel advisory at the Emirates website:

Special credit to my avgeek and planespotter friends who provided some of the meaningful footage you see on the video:

01:58 – Take off from Heathrow by planespotter Ethan @aviation_ethan (
02:04 – Cruising over Germany by planespotter Julia Muller @planespotterin.dus (
03:13 – Landing at Dubai airport by fellow avgeek Ibrahim Alshamsi @ibrahimalshamsii (

What does it look like to arrive in Dubai during COVID-19?

In this week’s video we are actually coming back from the trip that we went together last week. If you didn’t watch it, you can see it right here:

This video reflects the travel experience on 15th of July 2020 from London Heathrow to Dubai, the first Emirates A380 flight out of Heathrow since lockdown.

We are flying back to Dubai and I’m going to show you not only the flight experience but how does it look like to arrive in Dubai airport and go through all the COVID-19 procedures.

You asked for a review of economy class during the pandemic and hence I booked my return in emirates economy class this time.

Here is a summary of the steps I went through on this flight:

1) Hygiene kit: every passenger on an Emirates flight these days receives a hygiene kit containing a 4-ply mask, gloves, sanitizing wipes and sanitizing gel

2) Health declaration form: all passengers are required to fill in a health declaration form, which also outlines the rules and regulations for arrival as well as during the stay (refer to the link above for the most up to date information)

3) Upon arrival, desks have been added immediately prior to immigration. The agent verifies that you have all the required documents (ie. passport / emirates ID / health declaration form / resident permit to enter the UAE) and enters the information into the system. A PCR test kit is provided with a label which carries your name and a tracking number. Once you receive the items, you proceed to immigration normally

4) After immigration and hand luggage scanning, there is another check point where they verify that you had both the PCR testing kit as well as the health declaration form

5) The next step is to undergo the PCR test. A set of booths has been set up in the luggage claim area and a nurse conducts the nasal swabs utilizing the labeled kit you have been given

6) Once your test is completed, you receive a sticker on your passport “PH” and that is how you are granted clearance to proceed to the luggage belts before leaving the airport

7) All passengers awaiting a COVID-19 test result must remain in isolation (at home at a hotel) until the results are out. My results took 22 hours to be ready from the time of the swab collection (1am on 16/07/20) to when I received the SMS from Dubai Health Authority DHA (10:59pm on 16/07/20). Once you receive the negative results, you are free to leave isolation and enjoy Dubai, following all the precautionary measures the city has defined (use of masks in all public spaces and respecting social distancing guidelines).

The entire process from landing until leaving the airport took me approximately 90 minutes, including all my instagram distractions and a stop at Dubai Duty Free. Hence I believe that this is a realistic estimate for anyone arriving in Dubai these days.

This experience once again reassured my confidence in going back to the sky. From my business class review last week, I think Emirates delivered on the 3 points: Physical Safety, Emotional Safety and Value for Money – the last two being higher in Economy class than in Business class.

Special thanks to all the EK2 Economy crew on 15/07/20 - You really made my day!

Dubai entry procedures during COVID-19 UPDATED

The procedures for flying Emirates to Dubai and other destinations continue to change frequently.
Always refer to the below link for accurate and updated information prior to your date of travel:

By now I have already re-entered Dubai twice since the pandemic. I made a video about arrival procedures before and this one is an update. The experience I share here is a reflection of a trip I made to Egypt using Dubai as a connection and then retuning to Dubai after a short visit to Egypt.

The video is split into the 4 stages of the passenger journey:

00:47 BEFORE YOU FLY

- VISA: Dubai is open and the visit visa policies have been reestablished (see below).
Dubai Visa Guide:

- Travel Insurance: Emirates now covers every passenger for COVID-19 but some destinations still require you to present proof of medical insure that covers other eventualities other than COVID. It is the case for Egypt and I had to procure insurance in order to be allowed on the flight.

- PCR test: All passengers flying to or through Dubai must present a negative certificate during check in and it will only be accepted if your arrival to Dubai falls within less than 96 hours from the time you took the test. I witnessed passengers being denied boarding because they were counting 96 hours from the result - WATCH FOR THIS!!! Emirates also holds a list of authorized laboratories around the world (see below). If you don't find the country you are flying from on that list, just make sure it is from a highly reputable lab.
List of approved laboratories :

2:14 CHECK IN

- Present your travel documents (PCR documents, insurance if applicate, visa etc)
- Sign a Health Declaration Form, confirming that, to the best of your knowledge, you do not have COVID-19 symptoms

2:32 ONBOARD

- Travel Hygiene Kit and Mask Usage: Emirates offers you a travel hygiene kit containing masks, gloves, sanitizing gel and sanitizing wipes. Mask use is mandatory throughout the entire flight (except when eating or drinking) and gloves are also compulsory during security if you are connecting.

- Quarantine Undertaking Form: The crew distributes a form, where you basically commit to complying to the regulations which include for example downloading the app and quarantining while you await for test results (if you need to re-test) or if you test positive at any stage of your trip.

3:38 AT DUBAI AIRPORT

For most passengers, there are no further procedures. Once you land, you will go through immigration and exit the airport, with no need to quarantine. You will simply follow the precautionary measures which Dubai has in place (ie. everyone must wear masks in public spaces and maintain social distance).

- PCR Re-test: despite presenting a negative certificate prior to boarding, you must take another PCR test if you are flying from selected countries. Both Egypt and Brazil are on that list, so I had to re-test. There are Emirates personnel guiding you after you disembark to make sure that you get your test done if you need to. There are also two check points before you exit the airport where they verify your boarding pass and the stickers which confirm that you have taken the test if you need to.

- Quarantine: If you need to re-test, you must also remain in isolation until the results are out. You are allowed to take your transport but should not leave your home or hotel. The results usually come out in less than 24 hours. in my first entry in July, it took 23 hrs and this time it took 17 hrs.

I hope this video clarified many of the questions you had when I released the previous video. I also hope that it helps you make a well informed decision about whether or not you are comfortable with traveling these days.

My experience after 13 flights, 4 countries, 7 airports and 5 PCR tests since July 15th, has given me confidence that the environment to which we are exposed (airports, planes) is way more controlled than what it was back in February, when COVID-19 had been spreading.

Flying during a Pandemic with Emirates Travel Hygiene Kit

Thailand, Bangkok: BKK airport was completely empty and with most flights cancelled. This pandemic is totally killing the business. Emirates decided to offer all his passengers a Emirates Travel Hygiene Kit that contains masks, glows and hand sanitizers. I flew Emirates with a Boeing 777, Economy class during this crazy pandemic / COVID times. My flight was BKK - DXB (from Bangkok to Dubai).

A big thank you to Alex / Reporterfy Media, for hosting me here in Bangkok

DUBAI LOCKDOWN OPEN: how to travel to Dubai in 2020 and places to visit

Our video today was split into two parts:
00:26 : Rules and regulations for entering and visiting Dubai
03:30 : Join me for a ride in my car as I take you through the best sites in Dubai - Dubai Marina, Bluewaters island and Ain Dubai, JBR, Palm Jumeirah, Atlantis, Sheikh Zayed Road, Mall of the Emirates, Burj Al Arab, Jumeirah Beach, Dubai Water Canal, Burj Khalifa, Downtown Dubai, Dubai Mall, Dubai Frame, Dubai Creek Harbour.

Travel has been suspended worldwide since the spread of COVID-19 and the declaration of the pandemic back in March.
Like most countries across the world, the Emirate of Dubai in the UAE also closed its borders from 25 march 2020.
Earlier this week Dubai announced that it will once again open for visitors from 7 July 2020.

Emirates also released a very motivating and optimistic video - if you have not seen, here is the link:

As the city prepares to reopen, it is doing so carefully and responsibly. Therefore there are certain steps to be followed by visitors wishing to come enjoy all that Dubai has to offer as a destination.

Below I list the steps to follow as you prepare to visit Dubai:

1) Obtain a visa: nothing new here. The rules apply as they did before lockdown. if you need a visa, I recommend you process via your airline, hotel or travel agent as it is much simpler that way. if you are not sure whether you need a visa, you must consult official information such as the official Dubai Visa Guide - link below.

2) Purchase a travel medical insurance valid in the UAE, if you do not have international coverage. Once again, this can be obtained when booking your ticket or closing a package with your travel agent.

3) Take a PCR (polymerase chain reaction) test, which is a test that identifies the virus RNA, determining whether the person is infected. It is carried through collection of nasal sample and has a high reliability. The test must be performed maximum 96 hours prior to the start of the trip and will need to have a valid certificate to present before exiting the airport on your arrival to Dubai. Visitors also have the choice to perform this test at the Dubai Airport upon arrival.

4) Sign two declarations - a) stating that you are symptom free; b) stating that you take responsibility for bearing all costs associated with medical expenses related to an eventual quarantine and treatment while in Dubai;

5) All passengers arriving in Dubai must be screened and have their temperature checked. Passengers displaying fever or flu symptoms will be required to take a PCR test even if a test has already been performed in the country of origin;

6) All visitors are required to download the COVID-19 DXB APP and keep it activated for the duration of the stay in Dubai;

7) All visitors are expected to comply with rules and regulations associated to the prevention of COVID-19 contagion, including the use of masks and maintaining social distancing;

8) If you are found to test positive at any stage during your stay, you will be required to quarantine and undergo treatment as necessary. This must be covered by your medical travel insurance.

I hope this helps you plan and prepare your trip to Dubai. as we would say here: Yalla! Come! We are waiting for you :)

Shocking Business Class Flight to Dubai - Dubai Arrival Procedures

After a spectacular Lufthansa B747-8 flight in First Class, it turned out that my Lufthansa A330 flight from Frankfurt to Dubai would be a shocking contrast to my previous one.

There was no hot food, no pillows, no blankets and very limited drinks on this flight. It didn’t feel like this was a Lufthansa flight at all. Find out what happened during the flight!

I also give a comprehensive review of the Senator Lounge in Frankfurt Airport during my transit. The good news is the high-quality food and the showers in the lounge are coming back.

At the end of the video, I have shared the Dubai arrival procedures. Watch the video to see all the formalities and requirement in a step by step guide.

For more information, here is the up-to-date entry and transit procedures for Dubai and Abu Dhabi:

The New Normal of Airline Travel - What’s Changed?

I have observed 5 ways that commercial air travel has changed, since the COVID-19 pandemic began.

1. Airlines are retiring 4 engine, less fuel efficient, airplanes such as the B747 and A380.

2. As a result of lower demand and removal of the B747 and the A380, there are less or almost no First Class seats available.

3. Airplanes are cleaner now than ever. There is strong emphasis on the hygiene of air travel at the moment. Does social distancing really work in the air?

4. We are seeing drastic changes in how the in-flight service is conducted. Some airlines are downgrading their in-flight meals significantly. Hot meals and trays are being replaced by sealed and pre-packaged cold snack boxes. I will discuss the different in-flight service standard of British Airways, Turkish Airlines, Singapore Airlines, ANA, Emirates, Qatar Airways and Etihad.

5. Flying will become a necessity only for those who need to, it won't be for fun any more and will not be as easy as before. A lot of cumbersome paperwork, travel approvals and Covid tests are needed for international travel at the moment.
