What Happened Inside the Airplane Graveyard?
I visited Mojave, California which is a famous airplane graveyard in the desert. More than 100 planes are stored here and it is end of the line for most planes that arrive in the graveyard. I went inside an ex Thai Airways B747-400 to take a look at the interior, much to my surprise the interior had been kept intact. Then I step inside an ex-Qantas B747 and found my way to walk on the 747 wing! I could almost touch the winglet!
Then we drove to Victorville to meet up with an airplane scraper Huy, Huy gave us a tour and explained how they tear down airplanes using an excavator. The useful parts, such as the engines, the avionics and the interior, are usually stripped out for sale . We went inside an ex United B747-400 and ex Singapore/VIM B777-200 to take a look.

Aircraft Boneyard in Alice Springs.
COVID-19 has turned airports into ghost towns and reduced global air traffic to a tiny fraction of what it normally is. But in this dusty outback in the Northern Territory, the plane population is booming.
Billions of dollars worth of passenger jets are waiting out the pandemic in the Asia Pacific Aircraft Storage facility near Alice Springs, where the dry climate is ideal for preserving them until they’re needed again.
Singapore Airlines and Cathay Pacific are among the airlines that have sent much of their grounded fleet there, including mighty Airbus A380s.

Surreal. Beautiful. Sad. Hopeful. Inspired.
This will go down as one of the most incredible experiences in my life. As an avid avgeek and keen photographer I’ve always dreamt of flying over and photographing an aircraft graveyard. I still hope to do so one day.
This was different though. What we have up in Alice Springs at the moment is not an aircraft graveyard. Rather it is a covid induced parking lot. And that’s very different.
These aircraft are not here because they have reached the end of their economic and productive life. On the contrary, most of these aircraft are in the prime of their life. They’re here because the industry and the world has no use for them. Covid has decimated the global tourism and travel industry and these aircraft, just like the empty airports, closed travel agencies and the empty desks at our office are the visual sign of that.
Each aircraft represents hundreds, if not thousands, of lost jobs, lost dreams and careers that have ended prematurely. They also represent the thousands of families who have been kept apart by this damn virus.
But then as our flight continued I began to see hope and with it my energy and optimism grew.
What we have here are the building blocks of recovery. As vaccination rates increase our world is finally starting to open up it is these aircraft that will help reunite families and restore jobs, hope and dignity to millions around the world.
Each aircraft represents thousands of new jobs and a step towards bringing the world closer together.
An aircraft is pretty useless as city bus. Passionate travel industry people are rarely suited to careers elsewhere. Our challenge now is to bring back both and to rebuild in a better and more sustainable way. Personally, it’s a challenge I look forward to being part of.

Aircraft Parking at BNE - April 2020
Right now it is a plain of planes at BNE. Our team have worked together with air traffic control, airlines and teams on the ground to create 100 aircraft parking spots across the airport including the old runway, now Taxiway Papa. We also brought forward the decommissioning of our cross runway 14/32 to create space for aircraft at this time. We look forward to seeing these beauties take to the skies again where they belong. BNE remains open and we are working with all our BNE community to be ready to go when recovery is possible.

Little history on Pinal Airpark: The airfirld was originally built in 1942 to train soldiers for the ongoing war, WWII. Between '42 and '45, over 10,000 soldiers were trained here including over 2,000 Chinese soldiers. Many barracks, still seen today, held these soldiers. After the war was over, the airfield went dormant for a few decades until, similar to Victorville (

• Mojave Airplane G... ), the world needed somewhere to store unneeded aircraft who had been retired. Northwest Airlines was the first airline to store some aircraft here before the TWA 747-100 landed here for the last time in October of 1996. Since then, thousands of aircraft have landed here...some leave after long term storage like the the Dream Lifter we saw, whereas some never leave similar to the ANA 742s, NWA 742Fs, the TWA 741, and, many more due to the pandemic, such as the SAS A343 and many others.
