IAKWE (HELLO) FROM THE MARSHALL ISLANDS ????????Life is wonderful out here in country #157!

It was already expected that the Marshall Islands would be absolutely stunning (and it certainly is)... but it was unexpected how AMERICAN it feels here!

- They use U.S. dollars.
- They speak (American) English.
- They play basketball.
- They drink Bud Light.
- They use miles and Fahrenheit and feet.

I haven't been home in 6+ months and it is so amazing (and refreshing) to experience this home feeling in the middle of the Pacific Ocean - the Marshall Islands!

WHY are the Marshall islands so Americanized? Find out in today's video!

Just curious -- how many of my American friends had no idea about this? We all know of Hawaii and Guam, but did you honestly know about the Marshall Islands? Comment your thoughts below!

Bikini Atoll, The Marshall Islands

Lost somewhere in the ocean, this island looks like a paradise, doesn’t it? But Bikini Atoll was actually home to numerous nuclear testing programs that turned the picturesque island of Bikini into a radioactive wasteland. The inhabitants were forced to abandon their homes, and even today this remains hazardous for living organisms: the abnormally high level of radiation recorded here can cause cancer.

Between 1946 and 1958, 23 nuclear devices were detonated by the United States at seven test sites located on the reef, inside the atoll, in the air, or underwater.

In 1996, the Bikini Council authorized diving operations as a means to generate income for Bikini islanders currently and upon their eventual return. The tours, limited to fewer than a dozen experienced divers a week, cost more than US$5000 and include detailed histories of the nuclear tests.

Climate change never felt more real to my eyes until I arrived here in KIRIBATI - a small island nation in the Central Pacific Ocean.

The rising sea levels are quickly shrinking this country, which has a peak altitude of 3 meters. It's projected to be entirely underwater by the year 2100.

While many countries are feeling the impacts of climate change, nobody is more threatened right now than the 100,000+ residents of Kiribati.

The question now becomes, how do we prevent the people here from becoming climate refugees? The only 4 options I can think of are the following:

1. Build a higher sea wall (which will cost billions of USD)
2. Buy land overseas for them to relocate (will also cost a fortune)
3. Send more Kiribati citizens abroad (i.e. Australia and New Zealand) for jobs, and they can slowly adapt to a new life
4. Boost tourism in Kiribati so people can see firsthand the effects of climate change, which will also pump money back into the economy

Would love to get your thoughts on what we can do to help the wonderful people of Kiribati. I encourage you all to get creative and share your best solutions below. I will be reading and responding to as many comments as I can, and I encourage you to do the same. This is important.

The MARSHALL ISLANDS + snack shopping + us = A Travel Vlog...?

This video will NOT do justice to the Republic of the Marshall Islands beauty, culture or people. There are plenty of videos on the internet (not enough IMO) that do take a deep look into the complexities that are the Marshall Islands. This video is not one of them.

This video is of two tired people who go get snacks in a grocery store for meals because their room costs more than their budget and then they walk around. That is all. But boy did we enjoy every minute of it.

If you aren’t using United points (which you really should cost wise) and aren’t on a tighter budget - there are SO many things you can do in the Marshall Islands! You can rent cars to explore Majuro more, go on boat tours, go to a nearby atoll with an accommodation there, or you could even go to Enko island and have an overnight stay/day trip! And if you’re going right home after this and don’t live out of a backpack - you could even buy some of the most beautiful hand-made decorations.

Even though it was brief, thank you for having us!

Episode 152
__________
About Us

We met in college and started a five year journey to graduate, get jobs, pay off student loans and save money to travel. After getting married we bought a one way ticket to Greece in July of 2021 and have been traveling around the Globe since. Living abroad definitely brings some unique experiences.

These laidback Youtube videos will be our way of keeping in touch with family and friends as we explore different countries, try new and strange foods (and of course pizza), and see how many times we can avoid airplane fares. These homevideos will be the only souvenir we end up with at the end (only because nothing else will fit in our bags).

Thanks for watching!
