Hong Kong to Beijing by high-speed train from US$157

A journey from Hong Kong West Kowloon to Beijing West on train G80, 2,441 km (1,516 miles) in 8h56, showing stations, train, classes, food & scenery. For Hong Kong to Beijing train times, fares & tickets see

This was a relaxing day's train ride right across China at up to 300 km/h (186 mph), which as you can see isn't too fast to appreciate the views. The sheer scale of China's high-speed rail infrastructure is breathtaking, with a growing network and vast new stations. I hope the scale of some of the stations comes over in the video.

Arriving in Hong Kong by high speed train

This video shows what to expect when you arrive in Hong Kong by high-speed train from China. It shows the immigration process and the local transportation options in Hong Kong.

After getting off the train in Hong Kong, you need to pass the Chinese exit immigration and the walk to the Hong Kong entry immigration.

The transportation options shown are the taxi, subway and Airport Express. We do not cover buses in this video.

Go to the official website of the Hong Kong subway for a detailed map and other fare information:

If you need to catch a flight in Hong Kong, you can ride the Airport Express train located near the train station. Note that some airlines allow you to check-in for your flight at the Kowloon station. You can check-in many hours before your departure (even the day before) so that you can explore Hong Kong or go for dinner before heading to the airport. Go to this website for more information about the Airport Express and the in town check-in:

Hong Kong High Speed Rail vs flying to Beijing

I will find out whether it is worth traveling from Hong Kong to Beijing by the brand new high speed train.

Firstly, high speed rail fares are fixed all year round. A round trip ticket to Beijing in second class costs HK$2474, even in the peak season or if you are travelling on a very short notice. Meanwhile, a round trip Economy Class ticket to Beijing costs nearly HK$2700 with Cathay Pacific outside the peak seasons, and will obviously cost way more in the peak seasons, or if you need to make a last minute booking.

Hong Kong Airlines is cheaper, but there are a number of drawbacks for flying with them. While there are 3 flights per day, the first one departs way too early, so you have to get up at maybe 4am and spend a few hundred dollars on taxi fares to the airport. The next two flights arrive too late, so you will be forced to spend more money booking an extra night at your hotel. In any case, you will not be saving any money!

Let’s also consider the costs of travelling to and from your point of arrival in Beijing. You can take the subway straight from the Beijing West Station and it will only cost you 3 or 4 Yuan to reach the hotel. Whereas you need to first take the Airport Express into town from Beijing Airport before you can transfer to the subway, thus costing you 25 Yuan each way.

In the end, only flying with a budget airline will be cheaper than taking the high speed train, but would you really want to do that?

Secondly, let’s consider the total time taken to go from your home to your hotel in Beijing. Assume that you live on the western half of Hong Kong Island (i.e. Kennedy Town, Central or Wanchai). You should be able to quickly catch a taxi and be at the West Kowloon Station in a quarter of an hour or less. If you arrive at the station 45 minutes before your train departs as advised by the government, in order to have ample time to go through both Hong Kong and Chinese immigration and wait for your train, you would have been off within an hour of leaving your home.

On the other hand, it takes way longer to reach the airport. My personal best is 50 minutes after leaving home, and that is by taking the Airport Express. It is obvious that taking the bus will be even more time consuming. So it would be fair to assume that it will take an hour to reach the airport on average. Add the recommended 2 hours you need to arrive at the airport in advance to check-in, and you would have taken off 3 hours after leaving home.

Once you have arrived by train, you are free to take the subway to your hotel. Since the station is very close to the city centre, it shouldn’t take longer than half an hour. Meanwhile, you have to clear immigration and collect your baggage upon arriving at the Beijing Airport. The time taken may vary, but I will not be surprised that it will be an hour before you enter the Arrival Hall. If you decide to take the Airport Express into town, it takes half an hour to reach the Dongzhimen Station. From there, you need to exit the Airport Express station and walk over to the subway station before you can change trains. So all in all, you can easily take over an hour to reach your hotel.

Another thing of note is that mainland airports are notorious for their delays, and they are getting more serious over the past few years. Flights departing from the Beijing Airport were delayed by an average of 72 minutes in 2017, so you should also take that into account when planning your flights. In the meantime, high speed trains in China are rarely delayed.

In conclusion, taking the high speed rail to Beijing is not that much slower than flying, and it is cheaper and way more reliable. Therefore, it is more than a viable choice for those heading up to the capital. If China Railways were to start an overnight sleeper service it would be perfect!
