10 BEST FOODS to eat in Hong Kong (and exactly WHERE to get them) | THE CLASSIC HONG KONG FOOD TOUR

WELCOME TO HONG KONG!
Whether you're just coming to visit, or you've just moved to Hong Kong or you're moving out of Hong Kong and want to make sure you haven't left any stones unturned before you leave, this is the tour! This is what you have to eat in Hong Kong before leaving! The MUST EATS of Hong Kong. These are the most classic, well known, and famous Hong Kong dishes and foods. Make sure to try out these foods at their most famous restaurants respectively to really get in the ultimate Hong Kong food experience.

All these restaurants are super well known so don't worry if they look off the beaten path because they're not. Also, whoever tells you these places are hidden gems are clearly lying to you LOL English menus are available at all these places with the exception of Joy Hing so don't worry. This Hong Kong food tour is meant for you to do it yourself so it shouldn't be intimidating. This food tour is also within a small area (the more touristy areas of Hong Kong) so you'll be able to do it within a few hours though I would recommend you spilt it up before two days as there is quite a bit of food.

Once you've done this, come back and we'll go through the more hidden gems of Hong Kong but start here first so you get a basic food foundation of the flavours of Hong Kong. =) If you go straight to the hidden gems without a base, you'll won't really understand why those are hidden gems, if that makes sense.

EDIT: Just doing my tour guide training and there's a correction. Cookie crust arrived in Hong Kong in the 1940's and puff pastry in the 1950's.

ABOUT US
Meet the Bags Packed Family: Jonathan and Kelly, along with our three adventurous children. Nine years ago, we embarked on an incredible journey, leaving our home in Alaska, USA, behind to explore the world. As teachers, we were fortunate to find amazing opportunities in Chennai, India, where we spent two enriching years. Seeking new experiences, we then made our way to the United Arab Emirates.

Just as we were settling into our UAE life, the pandemic struck, but it didn't dampen our spirits. Instead, we saw it as an opportunity for another chapter in our journey. We moved to Indonesia, where we currently hold teaching jobs, and it has been a time of learning, growth, and connection.

As a family, we thrive on traveling and embracing the unknown. Adventures are our way of life, and through our experiences, we aim to inspire our children to be confident in meeting new people, trying diverse cuisines, and immersing themselves in different languages and cultures.

Hong Kong Street Food Tour — Roasted Meat and Amazing Dai Pai Dong Experience!

►Subscribe to my videos:
►25 Must-Eat Dishes in Hong Kong:
►Hong Kong Travel Guide for Food Lovers:

On Day 38 of our Round The World Trip for Food with Star Alliance, I wanted to make it a full on Hong Kong street food tour. We first started with some amazing Hong Kong roast meat, then had lunch at a legendary Hong Kong dai pai dong street food stall, and then continued on to a local Hong Kong dai pai dong for dinner.

00:50 Kwan Yu Roasted Meat (君御燒味) - Starting off the morning, we first ate at Kwan Yu Roasted Meat (君御燒味), a small and friendly Cantonese roasted meat restaurant. I ordered roast pork, char siu, and also got a soy sauce pigeon on the side. Everything was good, but the soy sauce pigeon, a local Hong Kong delicacy, was the best. Nothing like starting off a Hong Kong food tour with some roasted meats! Total price - 81 HKD ($10.44)

What is a dai pai dong? A dai pai dong officially means a restaurant with a big license plate, but it refers to usually open air cooked food stalls, or Hong Kong street food stalls.

7:20 Sing Kee (盛記) - One of the legendary Hong Kong street food dai pai dong’s located right in the heart of Hong Kong central is Sing Kee (盛記). They serve all sorts of stir fried dishes that you order to make. I ordered a plate of sweet and sour pork ribs, chicken with ginger and spring onion, and clams in black bean sauce. The street food stall has an amazing atmosphere, slotted between sky rise buildings within an alley. The chef was pretty friendly, and when I was taking photos, he offered me a taste test of the sweet and sour ribs, right out of the wok. Sing Kee (盛記) is an amazing Hong Kong street food stall to eat at when you’re in Hong Kong. Total price - 169 HKD ($21.79)

13:27 Chan Kun Kee (陳根記) dai pai dong (Thank you to: for this recommendation) - Finally for dinner, I decided we needed to take a little food mission to Fo Tan Station, Wo Che Estate, Sha Tin, Hong Kong, in search of a properly local Hong Kong dai pai dong experience. The restaurant was tucked back into a neighborhood, far removed from the everyday hustle of Hong Kong. Yet in the midst of the condos, there it was, Chan Kun Kee (陳根記), an incredibly huge open air restaurant serving all things Cantonese food. I ordered the drunken chicken, fried fish, mantis shrimp, and a spicy fish pot. The food was awesome, and the loud and hectic Hong Kong environment was perfect. This was a stop on today’s Hong Kong food tour that was well worth getting off the eaten path for. Total price - 402 HKD ($51.83)

It was an amazing day of eating Hong Kong street food on this food tour. I don’t think I can choose a favorite meal or dish of the day, they were all so delicious!

Hong Kong Food Tour - Breakfast, Bamboo Noodles Won Ton, and Chinese Dai Pai Dong Feast!

►Hong Kong Travel Guide for Food Lovers:
►25 Must-Eat Dishes in Hong Kong:
►Subscribe to my videos:

On Day 37 of our Round The World Trip For Food, we continued the food tour of Hong Kong starting with a classic Hong Kong breakfast of lemon tea and a beef and scrambled egg sandwich. We then had some delicious bamboo pounded noodles and wonton, and then continued to have dinner at a famous dai pai dong.

00:29 Sun Hang Yuen (新香園 堅記 Thank you to Josephine for this recommendation) - For breakfast in Hong Kong we headed over to Sham Shui Po and went to a classic Hong Kong cafe and restaurant called Sun Hang Yuen (新香園 堅記). I ordered my usual hot lemon tea, a glass of black tea with a half of a lemon chopped up inside. It was wonderful. We then had a beef and scrambled egg sandwich, which was surprisingly much better than I thought it was going to be. The bread was toasted wonderfully and the beef and eggs on the inside tasted so good, fried in what I think was butter. Total price - 33 HKD ($4.25)

4:58 Sham Shui Po market - After eating breakfast we walked around the Sham Shui Po market, a local fresh wet market in Hong Kong. The market was busy and stocked with everything you could imaging that goes into Hong Kong food.

6:29 Kwan Kee Bamboo Noodle (坤記竹昇面) - There are many famous restaurants in Hong Kong that serve egg noodles and wonton, but I really wanted to find a restaurant that specialized in bamboo kneaded noodles, which is becoming harder and harder to find in Hong Kong. So finally I found a place called Kwan Kee Bamboo Noodle (坤記竹昇面), a new restaurant that uses the owner's family recipe and technique for making his noodles. I was hoping to get to see the noodles being made, but unfortunately they weren’t making them at the time we got there to eat. Nevertheless, the noodles were still made using a bamboo pole to knead the dough. The noodles were amazing, had such a fantastic texture to them, and the wontons were equally as delicious. It was a fantastic noodle eating experience in Hong Kong. Total price - 84 HKD ($10.83)

13:11 Mong Kok, Ladies Market - Mongkok is one of the most famous areas in Hong Kong for shopping, and we walked around the area for a little bit. Ladies Market is a walking street flea market where you’ll find everything from clothes to souvenirs to luggage.

16:40 Tsim Sha Tsui, Tsim Sha Tsui Promenade, Star Ferry - 2.3 HKD ($0.30) - After walking around Mongkok we took the bus over to Tsim Sha Tsui to walk around and enjoy the views of the skyline of Hong Kong.

18:26 Tung Po Restaurant at Java Road Market (Thank you to Charles for this recommendation) - For dinner, we went to Java Road Market, and to a restaurant called Tung Po, that’s a well known dai pai dong restaurant within the market. They serve a huge menu of different Cantonese and even Thai dishes. My wife and I ordered a couple of different dishes, the highlight of the meal being the razor clams stir fried in black bean sauce. In addition to the food, the ambiance of the restaurant is exactly what you want in Hong Kong. Total price - 464 HKD ($59.83)

26:00 A Symphony of Lights - Finally to end this day of food in Hong Kong we went back to Tsim Sha Tsui to see the symphony of lights show.

Incredible Crispy Roast Goose and Claypot Rice in Hong Kong — HK Travel Food Guide!

On Day 36 of our Round The World Trip for Food with Star Alliance, it was a rainy day in Hong Kong. We started off with some local dim sum, then had incredible roast goose and finished the night with claypot rice.

1:03 Breakfast dim sum at Sam Hui Yat - Thanks to for recommending this restaurant to me. Sam Hui Yat is a Hong Kong neighborhood dim sum restaurant that’s nothing fancy at all, but serves just good tasting, everyday dim sum and yum cha. It’s just a neighborhood hangout, and it’s the type of place I absolutely love. We had a mix of different dim sum, all of which sit at the front of the restaurant slowly steaming and keeping hot until they are ordered and eaten. Everything was good but the lo mai gai, glutinous rice steamed in a lotus leaf was one of my personal favorites. Total price - 102 HKD ($13.15)

7:32 Yung Kee Roast Goose - For lunch we headed to the legendary Yung Kee restaurant in Hong Kong, known for serving some of the best roast goose in all of Hong Kong. There are a lot of stories and drama that surrounds Yung Kee, that I don’t even begin to know all about. But anyway, the restaurant is overall very nice, like a pretty fancy Chinese Cantonese restaurant. The roast goose was absolutely out of this world, with skin that was so crispy and juicy, and a nice blend of salty and sweet in the sauce. Yung Kee is an amazing restaurant in Hong Kong for fantastic roast duck. The chicken and the other dishes we tried were also excellent. Total price - 654.50 HKD ($84.33)

17:29 Four Seasons Claypot Rice (Yau Ma Tei) - To be honest, my wife Ying and I were pretty tired and exhausted from the day, but we decided to head over to Yau Ma Tei for a quick local Hong Kong dinner and to walk around the Temple Street Night Market. Since we were both quite full from lunch, we only ordered a couple dishes including a claypot rice with chicken and mushrooms, and a plate of morning glory with fermented bean sauce on the top. It was a great dinner on this Hong Kong food drink. Total price - 71 HKD ($9.15)

23:12 Temple Street Night Market - Temple Street Night Market is one of the old Hong Kong night markets. There’s not a lot to see or do, but it’s a nice place to browse around at night.

Day 35 in Hong Kong was a wonderful day of delicious Hong Kong food and attraction!

Hong Kong - is it still worth visiting?

Our Hong Kong episode is 6 years in the making. We started in 2018 with a mission to understand how Hong Kong had changed since the handover in 1997. But Hong Kong has endured monumental change in the last 6 years, and much of what makes Hong Kong so unique is fading away. I am determined to highlight what makes Hong Kong magical while I still can. Too much of this amazing city is nearing extinction and deserves preservation and celebration. Like Dai Pai Dong, Hong Kong's distinctive street food culture. There are only around 20 Dai Pai Dong left in Hong Kong and they are not to be missed.

Hong Kong was my home for many years and I have wonderful memories of this place being home. I am a fierce advocate for its identity, its culture, and everything it has and will always represent. So thanks for taking the time to watch, subscribe, and comment on this very personal episode.
