The Hobbiton Movie Set is a significant location used for The Lord of the Rings film trilogy and The Hobbit film trilogy, serving as a stand-in for the town of Hobbiton in the Shire in both trilogies.
A 'Hole' new attraction has been unveiled to the public recently at the Hobbiton Movie Set in Matamata. Visitors can now venture beyond the door and inside an authentic Hobbit Hole.
A guided tour starts with a drive through our picturesque 1,250 acre sheep farm with spectacular views across to the Kaimai Ranges.
Take a look at Bag End, where Frodo and Bilbo’s adventures began. Get lost among the hobbit holes and visit the Green Dragon Inn, the mill and the Party Tree. Listen to spell-binding tales of how Hobbiton came to be.
Tours depart daily from the Shire's Rest Cafe, 501 Buckland Road Matamata.

We were always wondering, is the HOBBITON MOVIE SET WORTH A VISIT? As you may already know, the Hobbiton Movie Set is a 2 hour ride from AUCKLAND, New Zealand and it can make for a GREAT DAY TRIP, but should you visit?
Steve is HUGE TOLKIEN fan, having read the books and watched the Lord of the Rings and the Hobbit, so this was a huge bucket list item for him when we visited Auckland, New Zealand. I had not seen the movies in a while, so he wanted to see if I would appreciate it as much as he did.

What is Hobbiton Really Like?
Guess what? We visited Hobbiton, one of the most famous places in New Zealand.
Wether or not you are a fan of Lord of the Rings Trilogy or The Hobbit Trilogy you must have heard about the Hobbiton and Hobbits right? It's location? New Zealand!
Now let's get into the information.
Where is the Hobbiton located?
It's located on a family run farm about 8 kilometres of Hinuera and 10 kilometres of Matamata, in Waikato, New Zealand.
How much does it cost to visit?
We paid, in October 2022, 89 (eighty-nine ) New Zealand dollars per person, this included transport from the main entrance to the actual place, a guided tour and a beer in the Green Dragon Pub (there's a non alcoholic option).
Can you visit Hobbiton by yourself?
No, you can't. Hobbiton is located in a family farm and the only way to get there is by a bus provided by the tour company which is owned by the family.
Where to stay the night?
If you have a vehicle where you can sleep you can check Rankers NZ and CamperMate app for the most up to date places nearby. If you are looking for a homestay or hotel your best bet would be Matamata or a homestay nearby (you can google this as we don't have this information).
Is Hobbiton worth visiting?
Absolutely, it's a magical and beautiful place.

Today we had the opportunity to visit the Hobbiton New Zealand movie set. Kara and I are both BIG Lord of the Rings and Hobbit fans so when we started to plan our trip to New Zealand we knew we wanted to visit Hobbiton! While RVing around New Zealand we stopped close to the town of Cambridge, New Zealand where the Hobbiton movie set is located.
The entire area around Hobbiton makes you feel like you're in the movies! Hobbiton is surround by green rolling hills dotted with sheep. We were lucky enough to camp only a few minutes away from the movie set. It literally felt like we were camping in the Hobbiton movie set! After staying the night only a couple minutes down the road, we woke up early to take one of the first tours around the Hobbiton movie set. We usually don't pay for tours like this… However, the tour around the Hobbiton movie set was totally worth it!! If you're on the North Island of New Zealand you should definitely take the time to take a tour around Hobbiton!
