The History of Burkina Faso
The history of Burkina Faso is a fascinating journey through the rise and fall of powerful empires, colonial rule, and a quest for independence and self-determination. The region that is now Burkina Faso was once inhabited by ancient civilizations, including the Mossi, Lobi, and Gurunsi, who established prosperous kingdoms and cultural legacies.
In the 19th century, European colonial powers began exerting influence over the area. The French established control over the region, known as French Upper Volta, in the 1958. During colonial rule, the people of Burkina Faso faced exploitation and resistance against oppressive policies.
The quest for independence intensified in the mid-20th century, and on August 5, 1960, Burkina Faso (then known as Upper Volta) gained independence from French colonial rule. Subsequent years witnessed a series of political changes, with periods of military rule and democratic transitions shaping the nation's trajectory.
In 1984, the country's name was changed to Burkina Faso, meaning Land of Incorruptible People, symbolizing a commitment to national unity and progress. Since then, Burkina Faso has faced various challenges, including political instability and security threats, but the spirit of resilience and determination continues to shape the nation's path towards a brighter future. As Burkina Faso strives to build a prosperous and harmonious society, it honors its historical roots while embracing the opportunities of the present.

The history of Burkina Faso | Burkina Faso documentary | World Of Knowledge ????

Burkina Faso is a landlocked country in West Africa that covers an area of around 274,200 square kilometres and is surrounded by Mali, Niger; Benin, Togo, Ghana and Ivory Coast.

The July 2019 population estimate by the United Nations was 20,321,378.

The country's official language of government and business is French.

Roughly 50% of the population speaks the Mossi language natively.

A country called Republic of Upper Volta was renamed Burkina Faso on 4 August 1984 by erstwhile President Thomas Sankara.

Its citizens are known as Burkinabé .

The Republic of Upper Volta was established on 11 December 1958 as a self-governing colony within the French Community and on 5 August 1960 it gained full independence with Maurice Yaméogo as President.

After protests by students and labour union members, Yaméogo was deposed in the 1966 coup d'état, led by Sangoulé Lamizana, who became president.

His rule coincided with the Sahel drought and famine, and facing problems from the country's trade unions he was deposed in the 1980 coup d'état, led by Saye Zerbo.

Encountering resistance from trade unions again, Zerbo's government was overthrown in the 1982 coup d'état, led by Jean-Baptiste Ouédraogo.

The leader of the leftist faction of Ouédraogo's government, Thomas Sankara, was made Prime Minister but was later imprisoned.

Efforts to free him led to the 1983 coup d'état, in which he became president.

DISCOVER BURKINA FASO: 10 INTERESTING FACTS YOU SHOULD KNOW ABOUT IT

Burkina Faso is a landlocked country in West Africa, surrounded by six other countries: Mali, Niger, Benin, Togo, Ghana, and Côte d'Ivoire. The official language of Burkina Faso is French, although many other languages are also spoken, including Moore, Jula, and Fulfulde.

The history of Burkina Faso can be traced back to the 11th century, when the Mossi Kingdoms were established in the region. The Mossi people were skilled farmers and warriors, and their kingdoms expanded to become some of the largest and most powerful in West Africa. They traded with neighbouring tribes and were known for their ironworking and textile industries.

In the late 19th century, Burkina Faso became a French protectorate, and the Mossi Kingdoms were gradually incorporated into the French colonial empire. After a long struggle for independence, Burkina Faso gained its freedom from France in 1960. The country's first president, Maurice Yaméogo, established a one-party state, but he was overthrown in a coup in 1966.

In the years that followed, Burkina Faso went through a series of coups and political upheavals. Captain Thomas Sankara seized power in 1983 and embarked on a program of social and economic reforms, including land redistribution, free education and healthcare, and a campaign against corruption. Sankara's government was popular among the country's youth and the poor, but it was also criticised for its authoritarianism and human rights abuses.

Sankara was assassinated in a coup in 1987, and his former friend and ally, Blaise Compaoré, took power. Compaoré ruled the country for 27 years, during which time Burkina Faso became a key player in regional politics. Compaoré was overthrown in a popular uprising in 2014, and the country has since gone through a period of political transition and consolidation. Today, Burkina Faso remains one of the poorest countries in the world, but it is also a vibrant and dynamic society with a rich cultural heritage and a commitment to democracy and human rights.

In this video, we will discover 10 interesting facts about Burkina Faso that will inspire you to visit this amazing country.

ANCIENT FERROUS METALLURGY FIELDS OF BURKINA FASO

Burkina Faso, located in West Africa, is a country with a rich cultural heritage that dates back centuries. One of the most fascinating aspects of its history is the ancient ferrous metallurgy fields that can be found throughout the region.

These metallurgy fields were used by the people of Burkina Faso to produce iron tools and weapons as early as the 8th century CE. The sites are characterized by the presence of slag heaps, furnaces, and other structures that were used in the iron-making process. Many of these sites are still visible today and have been recognized by UNESCO as important cultural heritage sites.

The ancient iron industry in Burkina Faso was an important part of the economy and culture of the region. The iron tools and weapons produced at these sites were used for hunting, farming, and warfare.
