Hiking up to Tigers Nest in Bhutan

The complete guide to hiking to the Tiger's Nest, Bhutan (EP1 of Bhutan)

Hey. This is the first video we made for our Bhutan trip - Tiger’s Nest, and we can’t wait to share it with you all!
The Monastery is the most sacred place for Buddhists and the most important landmark for tourists.
We hiked up to 3000m and were rewarded with magnificent mountain vistas, incredible architecture, intricate sculptures, and fascinating mythology tales.

We had heard about it so much- a place for the Buddhist to pay a pilgrimage in his lifetime, a temple with mystical legends, an unusual architecture that build in a cave at a remote location, the spectacular view of the surrounding mountain ranges and a sight o immerse in the Bhutanese culture and spiritual beliefs.

We also write an accompanied blog post. There is much more information there and with numerous images. Here is the link:

Tiger’s Nest in Bhutan - Trekking to the SPECTACULAR Monastery on a Cliff! (Final Day in Bhutan)

Tiger’s Nest Monastery in Bhutan is one of the most famous attractions, and the beauty is mind-blowing!
►Subscribe for more videos:

On Day 19 of our food and travel trip to Bhutan, we dedicated the entire day to trekking to Tiger’s Nest Monastery in Bhutan (Paro Taktsang in Bhutanese Dzongkha), which sits literally on the edge of a cliff. The hike takes about 3 - 4 hours or so, and since I wanted to beat the main crowds, my wife and I left from the hotel quite early to get a head start. It worked out quite well, because we were some of the only people on the trail that early in the morning. The fresh air was amazing. We wound our way along the trail, and soon we could get amazing views of Tiger’s Nest hidden in the clouds and on the side of the cliff.

The trail, although steep, isn’t really dangerous in any parts, as long as you keep your eye on the trail and don’t try to get too close to the edge. At the top of Tiger’s Nest Monastery they don’t allow any photography, so you have to check in your bag. We walked around the monastery for a little while, ate some snacks, and then headed down.

Despite Tiger’s Nest Monastery in Bhutan being one of the most famous attractions and icons of Bhutan, it really is spectacular.

It’s typically recommended that you visit Tiger’s Nest at the end of your trip to Bhutan so that you acclimatize better to the elevation.

The Most Spiritual Hike! (Tiger's Nest, Bhutan)

???? My JUST GO APP is here! Connect w/ travelers for free:
✅ SUBSCRIBE for more travel videos:

WOWOWOW! I just completed the most amazing, spiritual and life-changing hike up to the famous Tiger's Nest near Paro, Bhutan. It's my last day in the country of Bhutan, and this has absolutely been the highlight thus far.

Tiger's Nest is the name of a 17th Century Monastery complex, which has 9 temples and sits on top of a very steep cliff overlooking Western Bhutan. It's one of the most remarkable places I've seen in all of my travels.

At the start of the 12km hike, you can't anything because of the low hanging clouds, which swallow the green mountains. As you hike up and up, you will find a variety of Buddhist temples, waterfalls, and prayer flags decorating the sidelines. Monks are seen everywhere practicing their rituals, as this is one of the most sacred sites in all of Buddhism. The fact that it's currently rainy season makes this hike 3X as hard, as we trekked for hours and hours uphill in sloppy wet mud.

And then, BOOM, the first sight of Tiger's Nest is something I'll never forget. Ever. BHUTAN IS AMAZING!!

Thank you to all of my new Bhutanese friends who made this past week so special for me, and I hope to be back again for round 2 soon!

Part 3 of the Bhutan series.
I booked a three day tour with Flying Fox Bhutan (

Tucked away deep in the Himalayas, landlocked between the worlds two largest countries is the small kingdom of Bhutan. The land of Dragons. Boasting the worlds happiest people and surrounded by natural beauty this nation of less than a million people remains a mystery to most of the world. While I was in this region of the world I decided to check it out for myself. I booked a three day tour of the country with Flying Fox Tours. On day 1, we explored Thimphu, day 2 we went over the Dochula Pass to Punakha. On my third day we hiked a few hours up to Bhutans most famous historic site, Tiger Monastery. I also planned my trip around attending the nations the nations colorful cultural festival, Par Tsechu. This was the final day of tour in Bhutan, and here’s how it went…

We figured out the only way to experience Bhutan’s famous Tiger’s Nest Monastery ALL alone, and it was SO WORTH IT. This awesome experience was organized by Breathe Bhutan, & we highly recommend them!

We hiked straight up over 4,000 feet (The Bumdra Trek) to a campsite in the middle of the stunning Himalayan Mountains of Bhutan. The reason we wanted to do this overnight hike was so that we could wake up at sunrise and be the first to hike down to visit the famous Tiger’s Nest Monastery. We thought that would be the highlight of the trip, but it turned out to be something entirely different :)

I am Grace on Tour and travel has been my biggest passion ever since I can remember. My very first international trip was done two weeks after I was born. In the summer of 2018 I started posting on this channel as I set off on a trip around Asia before studying a semester in Taiwan. During this time my love for travel grew and I tried to travel to new places during my weekends off from university. Throughout uni I made travel a priority and worked multiple side jobs to fund my travels. After doing my thesis in Hong Kong I graduated in June 2019. At this point I decided to take a gap year and go traveling. My goal was to visit as many countries as possible. I soon realized that travel is what I love and wan´t to keep on doing. I now dream of visiting every country in the world.

Hiking to TIGER'S NEST Monastery + Spicy BHUTANESE FOOD | Paro, Bhutan

???? MyBhutan:
???????? Visit Bhutan:
???? WATCH: More Bhutan Episodes -

After spending a day exploring the beautiful Haa Valley in Bhutan, I began my eighth and final day in Bhutan with a trip to Tiger’s Nest Monastery! Come along with me as I hike to Tiger’s Nest and enjoy some hot and spicy Bhutanese food in Paro, Bhutan!

Tiger’s Nest is a Buddhist Monastery that clings to the side of a cliff near Paro. It’s the number one tourist attraction in the country and is the main thing I wanted to see on my trip. But first, I had to have some breakfast with my friend and guide Tsheten from MyBhutan!

My traditional breakfast consisted of a large, dense wheat ball, super spicy ezay, and chicken curry with chilies. It was a dense and hearty meal perfect for the weather, but it wasn’t my favorite breakfast overall.

Next, we had a two-hour drive ahead of us to Paro. We took the same road we came in on because the only other road in and out of Haa was under construction. Along the way, I saw the second-tallest mountain in Bhutan, Jomolhari. After an hour and 45 minutes, we entered Paro Valley and eventually the city itself.

In town, we stopped at the same shop I stopped at on my first day in Bhutan to buy a mask. I bought a beautiful blue one with skulls around its crown for 8,500 Nu/$112.57 USD. It was so worth the price! Then, we drove 20 minutes to the trail to Tiger’s Nest.

You have to hike the path through a forest to get there. It was brutal and the sun was scorching. I made it to the halfway point 50 minutes in and stopped at Taktsang Cafeteria to have a quick lunch of red rice, scrambled eggs, chili, potato, radish, and dal.

The potatoes were good and hot, while the radish was nice and creamy. I added some of the gravy from the radishes to the rice. I decided to leave the chilies alone and give myself a break from the heat. The scrambled eggs were nice and oily.

It was a lot steeper going forward. I could see Tiger’s Nest and a couple of other monasteries. I got a closer view of three or four of the monasteries I saw earlier. At the viewpoint, I got a gorgeous view of Tiger’s Nest. I wouldn’t be able to film or take photos inside, but this was the experience of a lifetime.

Finally, we made it to the security check, where I had to pack up all of my stuff and put it in a locker.

My experience at Tiger’s Nest Monastery was one for the ages! It’s a beautiful, 17th-century monastery and is a must-visit when you come to Bhutan. I suggest starting at 8 in the morning. It’s made up of shrines dedicated to the second Buddha and is incredible. I lit a butter lamp to pray for my friends and family and everyone affected by COVID-19 while I was there.

Then, we had to climb back down to the car. The hike down was more difficult than I anticipated. You have to go super slow because it’s easy to slip. In all, the trip took 4 hours!

From there, we headed to the Rinpung Dzong, which is the fortress of Paro. It was built before Tiger’s Nest in the 17th century. The fortress was gorgeous and reminded me of Punakha Dzong Fortress. Inside are colorful paintings of gods on the walls, courtyards, administrative buildings, and the central tower.

About 160 monks live in the fortress. There was a lower level, where there’s a balcony where you can see a palace in the distance that offers the best view of Paro. You can see the main town, the rice fields, and the river.

There were also roosters roaming the fortress because in the olden days, there were no alarm clocks, so the roosters wake them up in the morning!

Tiger's Nest Hike - Bhutan - Feb. 2024

Tiger's Nest - Taktsang, Paro, Kingdom of Bhutan ** February 25, 2024

Tiger's Nest is a small monastery and temple complex dramatically located and built high up on a cliff overlooking the Paro valley in Bhutan. It is one of 13 small monasteries, or “tiger lairs” where the Buddhist master Padmasambhava, also known as Guru Rinpoche, is said to have meditated in the 8th century.

Padmasambava, which translates as “he who came into being in a lotus,” was a Brahmin royal who spread Tantric Buddhism through Bhutan and Tibet in the 700s, and is seen in those areas as nearly as holy as the Buddha himself.

As legend has it, Padmasambava landed at Paro Taktsang to meditate when he brought Buddhism to Bhutan in the 8th century. He is said to have arrived on a flying tiger which had recently been his Tibetan concubine. He then meditated in a cave high on the mountain for four months after which he subdued the local ‘demons’ and began the conversion of the Bhutanese to Buddhism.

For those without flying tiger concubines, getting to the Tiger’s Nest is significantly more difficult. There is a two hour climb from the valley floor, which is already quite high at 7,000 feet, to the Tiger’s Nest 3,000 feet above— 10,000 feet above sea level. As one climbs the well-maintained but very steep trail over ever more vertical switchbacks, the monastery seems to appear and disappear in and out of the trees and the mists.
After two hours of a long slow climb—going slow is recommended to help manage the pace of the altitude—one arrives at the only beginning of the entrance to the Tiger’s Nest, a rock outcropping overlooking a vast chasm, with the monastery on the other side.

Beneath the promontory of rock, and across the chasm from the monastery, the cliff drops a couple of thousand feet to the gorge below. Carved into the exposed cliff face are stone steps; handrails have only recently been added. This is the way to the Tiger’s Nest monastery.
Despite reservations that visitors may have about navigating the intimidating steps, it’s common to see Bhutanese locals, including mothers carrying small babies, walking up the steps with ease. The steps lead down into the gorge, which provides the separation and isolation the Tiger’s Nest has enjoyed for all these centuries.

As one climbs into the canyon, a 100-meter high waterfall at the deep end of the canyon appears immediately in front, with the path traversing directly across its base. Once down and across the front of the water fall the steps start back up toward the Tiger’s Nest once again, over 700 steps in all.

Visitors can enter the actual Paro Taktsang temples (after removing their shoes and leaving their backpacks, phones, and cameras with a security checkpoint) and climb the several levels within, which contain three temples and a spectacular view. High and deep inside is the site where Padmasambabva is said to have meditated for three years, three months, three weeks, three days and three hours. You can feel the chill breath coming from inside the cave.

The return journey is a bit faster (though tough on knees and shins), but equally dramatic.
