OUR BEST HIKE EVER!! La Soufriere

#LaSoufriere #Lasoufrierevolcano #Stvincentandthegrenadines #Ourbesthikeeverlasoufriere

This has been our best hike ever on La Soufriere! We hiked an active volcano. The last time the volcano erupted was in 1979. The hike was moderate to difficult. We were excited to be hiking La Soufriere and made it up to the crater in 3 hours. It was breathtaking. We spent almost 2 hours at the summit enjoying the crater and the beautiful views. It took us 2.5 hours to hike it back down. Total of 6 hours. Not bad!! We did it.

We hope you enjoyed hiking with us. If you did, please leave it in the comments below.

► WHO WE ARE?

We are Gladys & Kenny, from Long Island, NY. We've always had a passion for traveling. We finally made our dreams a reality. In January 2018 we downsized and take the necessary steps to pursue our dream, to travel full time for as long as we can. We rented our house, moved into our attached studio apartment, and continued to travel on a part-time basis until it prepared us for full-time travel. On June 30, 2019, we left to travel the world full-time. The first stop was Bali, Indonesia. It wasn't a simple decision to leave our friends and family. However, you only live once and we didn't want to live with any regrets. We want to document our journey, so we recently did so with vlogs on YouTube and Social Media.
Join us. It's been one crazy ride so far.

Hii, lovies! There comes a time in life when doing something absolutely terrifies you and everyone -- I mean absolutely EVERYONE -- tells you not to do it. However, sometimes you just need to put the fear away, remain positive and #JustDoIt (Not this though..wait for authorization first). Take life by the horns and ride it! LOL. This wasn't my wisest decision since the #LaSourfriereVolcano here in Saint Vincent and the Grenadines is very much still active but, it was MY decision and, might I add that no one was injured during this hike. Admittedly, this was the best thing I did all year especially given that these past two years have not been easy. When the all clear is given to visit the volcano, I encourage you to do it with #ParadiseAdventures: I met some courageous and amazing #Vincentians. Hope you enjoy! :)

La Soufriere Volcano Hike

At 1,234 m (4,049 ft), La Soufrière is the highest peak on Saint Vincent as well as the highest point in Saint Vincent and the Grenadines. Soufrière is a stratovolcano with a crater lake and is the island's youngest and northernmost volcano. During periods of inactivity, visitors can view the volcanic crater by following a hiking trail that ascends through rainforest to the rim. Soufriere last erupted in April of 2021 and over two years later, the overall infrastructure of the island is still not restored to a pre-eruption state.
We experienced a great day hiking this volcano and the amazing lush, green tropical lands of St. Vincent and the Grenadines. Thanks for watching!

La Soufriere Cross Country Trail in St. Vincent, Saint Vincent and the Grenadines

The La Soufriere Cross Country Trail winds its way from sea level up to the top of the majestic La Soufriere Volcano (4048ft/ 1178m). Granite cliffs reach for the sky, giving way to sweeping valleys and deep gorges and eventually the immense volcanic crater. The walk to the crater is moderately difficult, and takes about two hours uphill from the windward side.

The La Soufriere Cross Country Trail snakes across the width of St Vincent, and can be walked from either the leeward or windward coast. The total trail is approximately 15 km long and offers visitors breath-taking panoramic views of the surrounding land and seascape and close encounters with fauna.

The easiest and most popular walk is a return trip to the crater from the windward (east) side, which begins at the Rabacca trail head near Georgetown - this takes about two hours to get to the summit, and is about 6 km long. The walk is moderately difficult, and a guide is mandatory for visitors. Visitors should be careful at the summit, it is often covered in thick cloud which makes it cold, and the edge of the crater difficult to see. It is recommended that hikers begin in the morning, to give enough time to appreciate the views and get back down before dark.

The leeward approach is longer and more difficult and the trail is more overgrown. Keen hikers can walk the whole trail from coast to coast – about a 6 hour walk. At the summit, there is a small and difficult trail down into the crater which will add an extra two hours to the hike. Please note that the trails do not begin at towns or villages, so it is important to organise transport before you hike.

Biodiversity

The La Soufriere Cross Country Trail is awash with a wide diversity of plants, birdlife and other fauna. Rugged and enchanting landscapes, mild temperatures, fertile volcanic soils and abundant rainfall give rise to a profusion of growth of Coastal Scrub, Montane Forest, Palm Brake and Elfin

Woodland. Floral species of note include the abundant Spanish Ash, Gunstock, Sweetwood, and the endemics: Begonia rotundifolia, the Melastome Tibouchina cistoides, the epiphytic Peperomia cuneata and P vincentinum and the Giant Tree fern.

Designated by BirdLife International as an Important Bird Area in the Caribbean, the volcano’s slopes support populations of forest bird species including rare sightings of the St Vincent Parrot, theWhistling warbler, the endemic race of House Wren, Rufous-throated Solitaire, Purple-throated Carib, Broad-wing hawk, and the Mountain dove. Reptilian species include the endemic lizards and the endemic Red-legged Tree Frog. The Agouti and Oppossum are among the mammals that can be seen from the trail.
