An eight day trek through the Simien Mountains, Ethiopia

Read the blog of this trek at:

The Simien Mountains are situated in the remote northern hinterland of Ethiopia and are the eroded remains of an enormous supervolcano which formed 30 million years ago. The north western part of the volcano has been heavily eroded by the tributaries of the Tekeze River, resulting in a 1,000m high escarpment. Below this dramatic escarpment the landscape has been eroded into towering buttes and mesas, volcanic pinnacles, gaping gorges and gullies. The Greek poet, Homer, fancifully imagined these landforms to be ‘The chess set of the Gods’.

Hiking in the Grand Canyon of Africa - Simien Mountains (Ethiopia)

The Grand Canyon of Africa is located in the Simien Mountains National Park (Ethiopia).
In the middle of the rainy season we are trying to hike to Sankaber and Gitch camps following the edge of the Canyon. We are unsuccessful as the path is too muddy. However we have some interesting encounters: a band of Gelada baboons (monkeys) and a shoeless kid at 3150 meters!

The Grand Canyon of Ethiopia! The Simien Mountains National Park in Northern Ethiopia is an exotic setting with unique wildlife and breath-taking views on a landscape shaped by nature and traditional agriculture. The natural beauties of this region have always filled visitors from Ethiopia and abroad with awe. Gentle highland ridges at altitudes above 3600 meters above sea level (m asl), covered with grasses, isolated trees (Erica &bored) and the bizarre Giant Lobelia (Lobelia rhynchopetalum) are found on the high plateau that ends abruptly at 1000- to 2000-m deep escarpments.

The margins of this high plateau consist of precipitous cliffs and deep, canyon-style gorges. In some places, the escarpment forms small elevations that offer splendid natal lookout points. The spectacular views from the observation points at Gidir Got and lmet Gogo in the center of the Park offer unparalleled panoramas along the high plateau and down to the lowland areas. Given the right meteorological conditions, views reaching up to a hundred kilometers over the valleys and the terraces of the Tekeze lowland basin are no exception. Geologically speaking, the entire highlands of the Simien mountains consist of dark Trapp basalt and bright, soft turf. They alternate and constitute a massive complex that is more than 3000 m thick. This complex was formed by volcanic eruptions in the Tertiary Oligocene-Miocene Age some 20-30 million years ago; ever since, it has been going through processes of uplifting and erosion.

The main attraction of the Simien Moumains National Park is its biosphere: the steep cliffs and the cool climate at the altitude of the Erica tree line (3600 to 4000 m ash) have created conditions that are appropriate for the survival of an ibex species (Capra ibex wee) endemic to the Simien Mountains. Despite the severe restriction of their habitat over the last centuries, several hundred animals have survived up to the present. Apart from the Walya ibex, many other animal species are found in the Park, for example the endemic Simien fox or Ethiopian wolf (Canis .071817,51-3 simony’s), several birds of prey, the endemic Gelada baboon ( Theropithecusgelada), the Klippspringer (Oreotragus omotragus), and the bush buck (liagelphus scriptus). The rareness of these species formed the backbone of the concept for conservation of the area, which led to the establishment of the Simien Mountains National Park in 1969. Simien mountain national park the Frist park national in Ethiopia.
simien mountain established in 1966 and 1978 the world heritage site in Ethiopia.

The human population living in the area adds to the distinctiveness of this special natural environment. The traditional lifestyle of the rural population and their survival in a rather harsh climate and with scarce natural resources make for the most striking impressions a visitor will have when trekking in the Park and its surrounding rural area.

Ethiopia - trek in the Simien Mountains

From Addis Ababa we travel to the ancient city of Gondar then on to Debark and the start of the trek to Ras Dashen the highest summit in Ethiopia.

Frustrated hike in the Ethiopian Mountains (Simien)

In this video we give up in our attempt to hike on the Simien mountains. The weather was horrible and the tracks impassable so we were not able to ride with our 4WD and therefore we did not have enough time to perform the planned trekking to Geetch and Chennek camps.
To increase our frustration the day we withdraw from the mountain the weather is excellent: sunshine and no rain at all.

At least in our way back we could admire the beautiful landscapes of this Ethiopian mountains in a clear day.

Journey Through Ethiopia - Africa Travel Documentary

Ethiopia is one of Africa’s most beautiful and fascinating countries, and a surprising travel destination. From spectacular mountain landscapes and national parks to vast lakes and mysterious deserts. From incredible wildlife to intriguing historic landmarks. From vibrant, fast growing cities to small villages and tribal regions, steeped in culture and traditions.

In this documentary style video, I will show you 10 beautiful places I visited, on a one-month journey through Ethiopia in 2019. I remember the smiles and welcoming attitude of the people, the incredible food, remarkable monuments, the stunning natural and urban landscapes. In all fairness, this was one of my best travels yet.

Sadly, however, at the time of editing this video, Ethiopia is in political and military conflict with the Northern Tigray region, which is causing great suffering to ordinary civilians. Like most people, I hope the relevant authorities can come to an agreement soon, and start rebuilding this beautiful land.

As a result of the conflict, some of the places in this video are currently inaccessible due to high security concerns. Always follow travel advice and consult local guides, to avoid putting yourself and others at risk.

Here’s a brief overview of the content in this video:

We start this journey in the small city of Lalibela, a deeply spiritual town popular with Ethiopian Orthodox Christians. The awe-inspiring monolithic churches are the highlight here, but meeting the many pilgrims is equally, if not more, rewarding. After Lalibela, we venture to the mysterious Danakil Depression, one of the hottest and most inhospitable places on Earth. It’s a bizarre desert landscape, with salt lakes, volcanoes, sulfur springs, and acidic pools. It feels like true adventure travel, but can only be done with experienced tour companies and guides.

The rock-hewn churches of the Tigray region are something unique, and Abuna Yemata Guh may be the most special of them all. This place of worship can only be reached on a steep and sometimes terrifying hike, but rewards travelers with incredible views, and a serene and peaceful atmosphere. The site is managed by several clergymen and priests.

The spectacular Simien mountains offer some of Africa’s best chances for hikes and longer treks, and are also home to the gelada baboons, nicknamed as ‘bleeding heart monkeys’. They live in troops and can live high in the mountains.

After spending some time in the nature, we continue our journey in Gondar, a friendly city with stunning historic monuments. Perhaps even more impressive is Aksum, with some of Ethiopia’s most iconic historic and religious sites, such as the towering obelisks (or stelea), and the Church of Saint Mary of Zion (which, according to legend, is the hiding place of the Ark of the Covenant, in a small chapel).

Addis Ababa is often overlooked by travelers, who rush themselves to the North and South of the country. But the vibrant capital city is an interesting place to spend a couple of days, and serves as a good introduction to Ethiopian culture and food. There are some great areas to be visited, including the famous Mercato, the largest market in Africa.

After Addis, we travel to the South of Ethiopia, which feels very different in many ways. The first stop here is Arba Minch, known for its wonderful Nechisar national park. Here, you can take boat trips on one of Ethiopia’s largest lakes, and spot crocodiles, pelicans, hippos, baboons and other wildlife. The Dorze village is not far from here, and offers a peak into traditional village life. Its friendly inhabitants have created a sustainable form of tourism, and visitors can witness (and take part in) the local economy at work, with cotton weaving, pottery, coffee ceremonies, bread production, and much more.

We finish this journey in the Omo Valley, which is home to many different ethnicities and tribes. It’s important to travel with local guides here, as these destinations often risk turning into so called ‘human safaris’. While tourism can have a positive effect on people’s lives, it’s crucial that it happens in a respectful and meaningful way.

Semien Mountains, Ethiopia - 3 Day Hiking Trip

I've been waiting to go to the Semien Mountains for a long time, it was supposed to be one of my absolute highlights in Ethiopia! We started out early in the morning by heading from Gondar to the National Park entrance, eagerly awaiting for the adventure to begin! On the first day, we hiked for about 3 to 4 hours along the cliffs with beautiful views down the valley! We were also lucky to see some Gelada Baboons! Bus as the hide continued the weather changed ... Check out the video to see what happens!

THE SIMIEN MOUNTAINS HIKE - The Rooftop Of Ethiopia

SIMIEN MOUNTAINS – Trek to “The Roof Of Ethiopia”

Hiking in Simien Mountains was last part of my 1 month long Expedition to Ethiopia. Hiking in attitude almost 4,000 meters just 2 days after I left hell in Danakil Depression in attitude some –150 meters (below sea level) and temperatures above 40 C was demanding - least to say. After overwhelming heat in Danakil Depression all of the sudden here in the mountains temperatures were down to –8 C during the night. For me it was just very pleasant surprise. But the trip was not about temperatures or attitude but about views – and I mean VIEWS!!!

Reputation of Simien Mountains as highest mountains in Ethiopia and possibly one of the highest in Africa, together with pictures of “smashing views” took my full attention in early stages of Ethiopian Trip preparation. Yes Views are amazing – as you can see in presentation but you have to deserve them. It took 2 days hike to come edge of the high point of Imet Gogo where everything around in sight (in distance of some 80-100 km) looked like view from a airplane since cliffs we were standing on were towering some 1,800 meters above surrounding landscape.

Basically no matter how you look at them, Simien Mountains will leave you speechless. Comprising one of the Africa’s principal mountain massifs, the Simiens Mountains are made up of several plateaus, separated by broad river valleys. The whole Landscape is incredibly dramatic. It was formed by countless volcanic eruptions some 40 million years ago; layer upon layer of molten lava was poured until it reached a thickness of 3,000 meters!

I started my trip 1 month earlier on another volcanic mountain massif of Bale Mountains which dominate South-East side of East African Rift, then I’ve spent 2 weeks traveling through Afar Triangle Desert of East African Rift to see Erta Ale and Dallol volcanoes of Danakil Depression and finished my trip in this magnificent mountain massif of North-West side of East African Rift.

Simply to say – Simien Mountains concluded one month long Expedition to Ethiopia which I will never forget as my most exciting trip of my life.

Cheers
Jiri

Dramatic Landscapes of Semien Mountains, Ethiopia's best Hiking Trails (2019)

This is our hike in Ethiopia's beautiful Simien Mountains. The Simiens offer some of the best trails in the world to go for a mountain hike. This is a once in a lifetime experience! A must-see for everybody who loves hiking in the wild!

We started early in the morning at 8 AP to pack our things as we wanted to get early to our next resting place since the weather forecast predicted rain, again :(. The sun was quickly drying and warming us up after the horrendous trip which was the last day. Sadly, even though this was the second day of our 3-day trip, it was also the last one ...

Life in the mountains of Ethiopia | Bale

Forest-covered highlands in Africa sounds like fiction for most. The Bale Mountains National Park is a special paradise where many climates and biomes remain isolated from the rest of the world. Bale has rare beauty everywhere you look. I went with a small group and had unforgettable experiences 3,000 meters plus up in the skies. I wanted to share this trip's documentary with you. Enjoy!

Hiking in the Simien Mountains, Ethiopia

Hiking for 4 Days in Simien Mountains | The Roof of Africa

Simien Mountains Ethiopia: a stunning corner of the African continent.

This region celebrates contrasting landscapes, from deep gorges to towering rocky peaks, arid lands to mossy forests, and inhospitable weather to fascinating wildlife. We take the trails on high narrow ridges overlooking the magical landscape; from dense forests down below to sheer cliffs and soaring escarpments. Simien mountains form the largest continuous area of its elevation in the continent earning the title The Roof of Africa

Spotted some of the endangered Walia Ibex which have been reduced to a single population of about 400 individuals in Ethiopia and whose numbers are still declining.

We reached the summit after 4 days of braving the diverse terrains with steep rocky climbs and extreme temperatures. With an altitude of 4,437 meters above sea level, Mount Bwahit is one of the highest points of the Simien Mountains.

Route:
Sankaber - Geech - Chennek - Mount Bwahit peak

This wouldn't be possible without the help of amazing locals during the planning stage and those I met along the way!
