Hiking Torres del Paine Circuit & W in Chile (Patagonia Expedition #08)

Our last destination is the Torres del Paine National Park in Chile where we hike the circuit including the popular W trek in 8 days - here is what happened.

For weeks we prepared physically and mentally for our trekking adventure in the Torres del Paine National Park in Chile. For me it was the second time doing the full circuit trek after I did the circuit back in 2013. The Torres del Paine circuit is also called the „O“ due to the shape of the trail - it also represents the extension of the „W“ trek which is most famous hiking route in Chile.

Before heading into the park we prepared in Puerto Natales where we bought all supplies needed and planned out our trip and route. We took the early bus into the park and left all the stuff we didn’t need for the trek at the Hotel Las Torres where we were supposed to stay after the finish of the trek.

This part of the trip was executed within 8 days and this is what we saw:
- Torres del Paine National Park
- Hotel Las Torres
- Campamento Serón
- Refugio Dickson
- Southern Patagonian Ice Field
- Campamento Los Perros
- Glaciar Los Perros
- Puerto Natales
- Campo Hielo Sur
- Campamento Paso
- Glaciar Grey / Grey Glacier
- Refugio Grey
- Refugio Paine Grande
- Campamento Italiano
- Mirador Britanico & French Valley / Valle Frances
- Refugio Los Cuernos
- Refugio Chileno
- Campamento Torres (CONAF)
- Lago Nordernskjöld
- Base Las Torres
- Valle Ascencio
- Lago Pehoe
- Paso John Gardner

I'm excited to share all our experiences in Patagonia in this video series. In the next episode we will do more tours in Torres del Paine National Park and meet more impressive characters along the way.

The Patagonian Expedition is a 95% self funded video documentary project following my trip in 2012/2013. Our aim is to show you the beauty of the rather unknown parts in Patagonia alongside with the famous spots.

Beside beautiful landscape you can expect loads of information and our personal experiences and struggles along the way.

Day Tours in Torres del Paine, Chile (Patagonia Expedition #09)

In the last episode of the Patagonia Expedition we show you all possible day tours in Torres del Paine including the popular full paine tour and finish with a boat excursion to the Grey Glacier

After doing the full circuit hike in Torres del Paine we stayed for 4 days more at the Hotel Las Torres to explore the other sides and viewpoints of the national park we haven’t seen yet. One of the best options to see various sights in just one day is the Full Paine tour in Torres del Paine which follows the road inside the park and takes you to some very stunning viewpoints e.g. at the Pehoe lake and the Lago Grey.

At the end of the road you can opt-in for a boat excursion on the Lago Grey to see the Grey Glacier up close. The boat trip isn’t cheap but the views to the glacier are incredible! Other great day tours are:
day hike to the base of the torres / mirador base de las torres
day hike / horseback ride to the top of Cerro Paine (aka Huella de Puma)
half day tour to Laguna Amarga & Laguna Azul
horseback ride along the Lago Nordernskjöld
day hike to Refugio Los Perros

This part of the trip was executed within 4 days and this is what we saw:
- Torres del Paine National Park
- Hotel Las Torres
- Cerro Paine
- Hosteria Pehoe
- Southern Patagonian Ice Field
- Salto Grande
- Laguna Amarga
- Laguna Azul
- Campo Hielo Sur
- Glaciar Grey / Grey Glacier
- Refugio Grey
- Hotel Lago Grey
- Lago Nordernskjöld
- Base Las Torres
- Valle Ascencio
- Lago Pehoe

HIKING THE O TREK IN PATAGONIA (UNGUIDED) // CHILE TRAVEL VLOG

What is the O Circuit, or the O Trek? Well, it's a 120(ish) kilometer trek through what is arguably the most beautiful part of Patagonia, Torres del Paine National Park. The O Trek got its name for the shape of the route which includes the commonly-known W-trek (we explain it better in the video). Over 10 days we hiked the O Trek while carrying all of our own gear and food, and this video tells the story of what that was like. It includes epic views, lots of blisters, new friends, many mice encounters, warm food on cold days, a lot of pain, a lot of joy, and some serious determination.

Whether you have stumbled upon this video because you are looking into hiking the o trek or w trek, or you simply want to see what it takes to trek for 10 days in Patagonia, we are glad to have you! We had an incredible time braving the 100km winds to see grey glacier and pushing ourselves to our limits to make it to Los Torres before the rain came. We had so many highs and lows during this trip and hope you enjoy watching!

What 10 days in TORRES DEL PAINE in Patagonia looks like & how does it work? | No W Trek!

Thinking about planning a trip to Patagonia? Here's how I spent 10 days in Torres del Paine National Park in Chile without doing the W Trek or O Circuit. We also share with you, how to get to the park, where to stay, and the operators to consider.

Splitting time between Hotel Las Torres and Chile Nativo, we got a chance to do everything from hiking Mirador Las Torres/Base of the Towers, kayak Lago Grey, go horseback riding, see pumas in the wild, hike the hidden gem Cerro Paine, and more!

Why not the W Trek? As it turns out, you can actually see a lot of what the W Trek offers by doing day trips instead of the gruelling 5 or more days. This 10 day Patagonia itinerary shows you that you actually get to see a lot more by not doing the W.

Patagonia - Torres del Paine, Chile, Trekking the 'O' Circuit

Map:
Scenery: ★★★★★
Difficulty: ★★★★★

Day 1: Welcoming Center - Refugio Dickson
Day 2: Refugio Dickson - Refugio Los Perros
Day 3: Refugio Los Perros - John Gardner Pass - Refugio Grey
Day 4: Refugio Grey - Paine Grande - Lake Pehoé Trail
Day 5: Paine Grande - Valle del Francés - Refugio Francés
Day 6: Refugio Francés - Valle del Francés - Refugio Los Cuernos
Day 7: Refugio Los Cuernos - Refugio Chileno - Base Las Torres
Day 8: Refugio Chileno - Base Las Torres - Welcoming Center

Most people stay the first night at Seron. I recommend that you skip it and hike to Dickson on the first day and spend more time in the other sections as the trailhead to Seron is the least interesting section. However, you need to be comfortable hiking 20 miles a day to do so.
I made the Campsite/Refugio reservations with some buffer time to hike Valle del Francés and Base Las Torres twice in case of the bad the weather.
It worked well for Valle del Francés. I didn't see anything when I first hiked Valle del Francés as it rained. The clouds cleared up next day and I could see amazing views.
Unfortunately, it didn't work for Base Las Torres. Although I hiked to the Base Las Torres twice and stayed there for 4 hours, I didn't have luck to see the clear view of the Towers. I couldn't wait there forever as the trail to the Base Las Torres was closed at 2pm from Refugio Chileno and the rangers came up to Base Las Torre and asked the hikers to go down at 4pm.
I recommend that you allow yourself plenty of time as the weather is unpredictable.

W TREK CIRCUIT ???? Trekking in Torres del Paine

This is our most popular trip in Torres Del Paine; we hike the whole W trail, from hut to hut. We include bedding so you don’t need to bring a sleeping bag, but you need to carry a backpack with your personal belongings.

We start and finish in Puerto Natales, so if you are in Punta Arenas, you’ll need to take a private transfer or a public bus to Puerto Natales (3 hours).

The trek starts around noon on Day 1 from Puerto Natales.
The Refugios (mountain huts) are cozy with sharing rooms (bunk bed style) and communal bathrooms.

The trek includes a private bilingual guide and private transfer in/ out from Puerto Natales.

We hike to the lookout point of the towers on day 2 (you’ll just need a day pack because its a round trip hike from the same hut, approx. 8 hours). Day 3 we hike to Cuernos, here you can upgrade to a private cabin with free access to an outdoor hot tub. Day 4 its on to the French Valley and the Pehoe Lake.

The last day we hike to Glacier Grey and connect with a boat to navigate in front of the glacier, before we take the private transfer back to Natales.

You will finish in Puerto Natales around 6.30 PM, in time to take a public bus or private transfer to Punta Arenas.
We can open a departure for any date (we already have several in our website) and share the group with a maximum of 8 guests.

Believe or not they enjoyed a record week of sunshine and no wind.

The trails around the jagged mountain peaks in Torres del Paine form one of the world's most classic trekking routes!

Torres Del Paine O Circuit

Patagonia has been on the bucket list for a while and deciding to hike in Torres Del Paine national park is not as easy as meeting up at a trailhead, throwing on a backpack on and walking in the woods for 8 days, Sierra style. Do we hike the Torres Del Paine highlights in 4-5 days along the W, or see everything that park has to offer with the 6-11 day O or Q circuits? The W route is the most popular and hits the highlights of Torres Del Paine in 4-5 days. Let’s call the W, the Disneyland of Torres Del Paine. Due to time constraints but not wanted to compromise or miss even one view, we decided to pack 120 km, 75 miles with side hikes, along the entire O circuit in the minimum recommended 6 days. We picked the days, books the camps and it was done. T-1 month to Chile for the trip of a life time.
