Secret Canyon - Sedona, AZ - Trail Guide to backpacking in the Secret Canyon Wilderness

Secret Canyon - Sedona, AZ

Here's a trail guide to backpack the Secret Canyon Trail, located in the Secret Canyon Wilderness of Sedona, AZ. Secret Canyon is a remote and lightly trafficked out and back hike. It can be done as a day hike or an overnight. It features an arch, waterfall, pine trees and amazing views that Sedona is known for, only without all the people. The long and rough road to access the trailhead is a deterrent for many. You can walk down it to the trailhead, but it's a miserably 7 mile (total) slog with full sun exposure, jeep traffic and lots of ups and downs. However, if you can get there, Secret Canyon is a great hike that offers all the good parts of Sedona only with more solitude.

Exploring Sedona for Ancient Ruins

Exploring Sedona for Ancient Ruins

Alright, I will start by saying I am often torn when I make a video on a place. I want to share, but I do not want an area overrun and overwhelmed. I found this location through online research, basically by stumbling across a picture similar to my thumbnail.....It looked interesting, so I kept digging until I figured out where it was. And then I headed out.

And couldn't find it. But in all honesty, I wasn't looking very hard the first time.

This is round two. I went expecting a very well defined and well used trail to a well known ruins site.

That's not what we found. Instead, it was a difficult search involving mistakes, backtracking and trail and error to find a well hidden, lightly traveled and well preserved ruins site.

So I apologize, but I don't want to be the one who spoils this area.

That said, I am not an expert. These are not extremely remote and unknown ruins. This video gives you as much to go on as I had when i found them.

So best of luck if you decide to hunt this incredible area down yourself. Hopefully, by not disclosing step by step directions, it will be empty when you get there, just like it was for us.

Boynton Canyon Trail and the Secret Subway Cave in Sedona, AZ

On our recent trip to Sedona, we made friends with a local on one of our hikes. During our conversations, Renanuel told us about his favorite hike in Sedona, which turns out to be the secret Subway cave that Dustin and I have been wanting to visit. With Renanuel’s directions, we were both excitedly headed to the trail the next day. The secret Subway Cave on Boynton Canyon Trail is such a beautiful place. Photos didn’t really prepare us for how magical this place really is. With respect to Renanuel, we won’t disclose its exact location, but we will give you a few tips for your research.

Passage to another world

In eastern Nevada, there is a Gosiute story that this cave is a gateway to an other world with lush fields and many usual animals. Access is not always available to enter this other world, but it is told that a strange people live in there and will take prisoner and make slaves of any who dare to intrude on their realm.

Hiking to an Amazing Campsite and Ancient Ruins in Sedona

DO NOT WRITE, CARVE, SPRAY PAINT, OR ANY OF FORM OF VANDALISM ON ROCKS, TREES, SIGNS ETC.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------

It's been over a year since Angie and I did this hike but it's still worth sharing...

Our final hike in Sedona was a special one; with the help of a local storeowner in town we were able to find an amazing backcountry campsite that was isolated far from town and overlooking a beautiful canyon. While researching for this hike I found some sources online that made me realize we would be passing by some ruins that were in very good shape so I added that into our plans too. The campsite lived up to its hype, we enjoyed the spectacular views there both in the evening and the morning before hiking back towards the Jeep. On the way back, Angie continued to the Jeep where we had camp already set up from the previous days and I left the trail to hike on over to the ruins, which ended up being one of the highlights of our entire roadtrip through the southwest.

This trail isn't hiked as frequently as most of the trails in Sedona, and even less people go up to the ruins. The entire time we were out there we didn't see another person hiking on the trail, this was especially good because there is really only space for one camp at the overlook we camped at. Maybe if I kept hiking further on when I reached the saddle while searching for my campsites maybe I could have found one up there but I can't say for sure.

Because of there aren't many good places to camp and the vulnerability of ancient ruins I decided not to name any locations or trailheads that we hiked to in this video. If you really want to do this hike you should be able to figure it out with some research, we were able to.

Exploring some ancient ruins in Sedona, AZ, USA

I made this video while exploring the ruins of the Anasazi Indians in the Boynton Canyon area of Sedona, AZ, USA. These ruins are at least 1000 years old and are very primitive but well-thought out and located, to keep from natural elements (rain, snow, cold, sun). The ancient people had no technology, but were able to hike and haul rocks to build whatever they needed.
