Half Dome | The Best One Day Hike In Yosemite National Park

#Yosemite #HalfDome #California

THE FINAL HIKE OF OUR TRIP! We lucked out like I said and snagged two permits to hike the infamous Half Dome! We were so excited to find out we pulled permits and after a whole day of hiking previously, we woke up early and made our way through the mist trail and on to the cables of Half Dome. This has to be one of the best hikes I have ever done and one of the most popular day hikes in all of Yosemite National Park. This hike was truly special. We got to travel along the mist trail to see Vernal and Nevada Falls before making our way into the backcountry and onward to the cables.

I have to say I was so happy with how this hike turned out. The cables are no joke but you can do it! Just make sure you try and bring gloves. We met a couple that dropped there set before we made the ascent and couldn't have been happier with the extra support. The views at the top are truly amazing and it is a place that not too many people get to see in a given day.

Yosemite is truly a magical place and I can't believe it took me 31 years to get here! I know the next time I visit it will be much, MUCH sooner! Thank you all again for tagging along with us through our journey throughout Yosemite Valley and for all the videos that I have put out in the past. This has become a passion of mine to bring you guys all the footage of our adventures and I can't wait to see where my girlfriend and I are headed to next!

But, I just want to thank you all again for watching, and have a GREAT REST OF YOUR DAY!

Yosemite National Park | 4K HDR

#athomeinwildspaces #Yosemite #HDR #Dolbyvision

Yosemite National Park is considered one of the Crown Jewels of the United States national park system. Home to icons like Half Dome, Yosemite Falls, El Capitan, the stunning Merced River, Vernal and Nevada Falls, among other wonders like no other place on earth.

Yosemite Valley has been called most beautiful place on earth. While that is certainly debatable, this is a remarkable, even sacred landscape and now you can enjoy it from home in stunning HDR.

Few people will ever see Yosemite like this, up close, intimate, and with reverence. Remember that places like Yosemite cannot survive without the support and mindfulness of the public.

When visiting, prioritize the health and wellbeing of Yosemite National Park. We hope you enjoy taking an HDR tour of Yosemite. For more information on hiking Half Dome, the Mist Trail, or Yosemite Falls make sure to watch our companion virtual hiking guid videos.

Hiking to Half Dome in Yosemite National Park

Hiking to Half Dome in Yosemite National Park

One of the most iconic California hiking trails is the hike to Half Dome! This is a 14-16 mile hike with a 5,000 foot elevation gain. I left before dawn and returned around sunset taking 12 hours to complete. While I was not able to get a permit for the cables from the daily lottery, it was a beautiful hike seeing Vernal Fall and Nevada Fall and getting a great view from the almost-top!

Hiking Half Dome, Yosemite National Park, California, USA in 4K

On Sunday August 16, 2020, I was fortunate enough to win the permit lottery at recreation.gov to hike and climb the cables at Half Dome in Yosemite National Park in California. The hike began just before 6 am on Tuesday, August 18, 2020. The hike is 17 miles (22.7 km) roundtrip and gains an elevation of 4,800 feet for a final elevation of 8,842 ft.

We started at Happy Isles via Mist Trail which led us to Vernal Fall. We continued upward to Nevada Fall and arrived just around 8:30 am where we had a short rest and breakfast picnic with new friends. We continued along near the backpackers camp around the base of Half Dome into the forest filled with beautiful redwood trees. We arrived at the base of the subdome climb which is one of the most challenging areas before the cables with many steep steps and switchbacks before arriving at the top of the subdome before the cables.

I began the final cable ascent around 12:30 pm with peak heat and sunshine and had a successful summit just after 1 pm. After walking around the summit and taking photos and celebrating with new friends, we began our descent around 1:30 pm, just two hours before my hard stop of 3:30 pm.

It is always recommended to bring at least a gallon of water and plenty of food for this trip. I personally suggest at least a gallon and half of water if possible, especially in the summer. Although physically challenging, being mentally prepared for the long trek back down is highly suggested.

Half Dome Hike - July 2017 4k

Quick edit from a recent trip to Yosemite. Shot on a GoPro Hero 5 @ 4k pro-tune settings. Edited and color corrected in Adobe Premiere Pro.

Hiking Half Dome - Half Dome Hike is an iconic Hike at Yosemite National Park

Half dome hike is an iconic hike at Yosemite National Park! Hiking Half Dome is really tough and needs a hiking permit. The half dome cables were up.

This is one of America’s most iconic, most challenging and memorable hikes. On this hike, you get to walk on some of the best trails, 2 majestic waterfalls, walk through the forest of giant Sequoia trees and the best part is climbing the final 400 feet on the cables and the reward is stunning, you get to see the best view of Yosemite national park. Its Yosemite’s most recognizable landmark with 8500 feet of elevation. Welcome to the one and only Half Dome, YNP. California.

You must have the permits in order to climb the sub dome and cables. You have to apply for the pre-season lottery in the month of March and the result will be announced sometime in April. Apart from the pre-season lottery, there are daily lotteries as well. You have to apply 2 days before the actual hike and they will let you know by end of the day.

You can either take the Yosemite Valley shuttle to stop 16 – Happy Isles – or walk from the parking lot to the Mist and John Muir Trailhead. Right after you cross Happy Isles Bridge, the trail begins with a sharp right turn, following the Eastern bank of the Merced River. The trail is flat and easy to begin but there are some sections with elevation gain. Walking through a forested area with huge boulders to either side is a very picturesque start to your hike. You will pass a sign showing distances of all routes on the High Sierra Loop Trail and eventually reach an area with amazing views of towering granite formations and dense forest to your right.

Not long after you cross Vernal Falls Bridge and just one mile after you begin the trail, you will reach the point in which Mist and John Muir trails split. It’s roughly half a mile from here to reach Vernal Falls. At 317 feet tall and against a flat walled backdrop, Vernal Falls is stunning. You might even catch a rainbow in the spray if conditions are perfect as the waterfall lands in a plunge pool. A little further up you can actually stand right next to the Vernal Fall drop. This is a fenced off area but the view is awesome and well worth a quick stop.

Vernal to Nevada Falls - You’ll hike about 2 miles through tranquil forests and up more stairs alongside another incredible waterfall.

The trail splits near the top of Nevada fall. Go left to continue on Half Dome. After Nevada fall, the trail levels out a little bit for a mile long at the Little Yosemite valley where you can see this beautiful river and tall trees.

After passing a little Yosemite Valley, the trail climbs through forest of Sequoia trees. Occasionally you get to see the glimpse of Half Dome. A steady uphill trail taking you to the sub dome.

Climbing up the sub dome is difficult. The sub dome is comprised of hundreds of stairs before you reach the Half Dome cables. These stairs can be exhausting; I’d recommend taking a break once or twice up the Sub Dome to catch your breath but also to take in the view.

From the top of sub dome you get to see the first close-up view of half dome and the fun begins from here.

This climb can be very intimidating and challenging. Make sure you’re physically and mentally prepared before you begin. The incline is steep and will require you to use your upper body strength to hold on to the cables and pull yourself forward as you climb. This climb is challenging, but the satisfaction and view that you get at the summit makes it all worth it.

Half Dome is an experience like none other. If you have the chance to visit Yosemite National Park and are up for the challenge, do it! You’ll be able to say that you’ve completed one of the best hikes in the world. Make sure you take the proper precautions and don’t push your limits.

4K Yosemite Half Dome Hike June 24, 2020

Half Dome Cables Hike

Half Dome At Night, Part One (4K Time Lapse)

What happens when you and a bunch of friends carry a dozen cameras and a couple dozen lenses into the mountains, and point them all at the same thing from miles away? 15,000 photos, and 27 miles of hiking with 65-lb backpacks, that's what happens.

Here are the results of the first half of our big adventure! Stay tuned for the second half, when we attempt to finally reach the infamous Diving Board...

A big thank-you to Sean Goebel and Kurt Lawson for conceiving this project, and allowing me to be a part of it! I can't wait for our next adventure together; hopefully, it will involve significantly lighter backpacks and slightly less misery.

Check out the photography by these amazing photographers:

Also, a big thanks to David Hunter for joining me on my particular path through the woods and over the hills to these viewpoints. It was by far the most difficult hiking I've ever done in my life; thanks for being such a good co-adventurer! Check out David's work at:

To see more still images and details about this adventure, visit
Licensing of time-lapse footage in 4K or 8K is available, and prints are available of still images.

DISCLAIMER:
In case you think we've dramatized this short 10-mile hike for the sake of Youtube, be forewarned!!! Getting to the spot where we went in this video is NOT easy. It might be a lot easier if your backpacks weigh only ~30 lbs, instead of our 65+ lbs, but you must still have a lot of experience with wilderness navigation and survival before attempting such an adventure. There is no trail, and depending on the time of year, access to water may be a 3-4+ hour hike away, through some of the harshest terrains I have ever encountered. Having said that, the spot we visited is well-known, it's not particularly secret or anything. It's called the Cascade Cliffs, above Little Yosemite Valley.
