Bariloche in Argentina is located at the northern end of the region Patagonia and serves as the perfect gateway to start our adventure. Surrounded by lakes and situated close to the Andes you can go for big variety of activities. While it is one of the largest ski ressorts in South America in winter it turns into a hikers paradise in summer.

Rather than hanging out in the city itself we used it as a base to drive around the 7 lakes, hike & camp to the Tronador and climbed our way up to Frey, Cerro Campanario and Catedral. With this we can give you a bigger picture of the area and you can easily use this video as a Bariloche Guide for your own trip!

This part of the trip was executed within 1,5 weeks by using the local buses and a well planned itinerary after we flew in from Buenos Aries - following I list all the places we visited & Things to do in Bariloche:
- Chocolateria Rapa Nui
- Cerro Campanario
- San Martin de los Andes
- Circuito de los 7 Lagos
- Villa La Angostura
- Center of Bariloche
- Villa Catedral
- Cerro Catedral
- Refugio Frey
- Refugio Otto Meiling
- Cerro Tronador
- Pampa Linda
- Glaciar Castaño Overo

I'm excited to share all our experiences in Patagonia over the course of the next 8 weeks with you. In the next episodes we will Hitchhike the Carretera Austral, trek through the most impressive mountain ranges, ice hike over the glaciers of the southern Patagonian Icefield and meet impressive characters along the way.

The Patagonian Expedition is a 95% self funded video documentary project following my trip in 2012/2013. Our aim is to show you the beauty of the rather unknown parts in Patagonia alongside with the famous spots.

Beside beautiful landscape you can expect loads of information and our personal experiences and struggles along the way.

A DAY IN BARILOCHE ARGENTINA - How to get around and see the lakes!

A DAY IN BARILOCHE ARGENTINA - How to get around and see the lakes!

Our final video in Patagonia! It’s been an incredible few months exploring this beautiful part of Argentina including Ushuaia, El Calafate, El Chalten and now Bariloche but all good things come to an end and in this video we make the most of our last day in this beautiful region.

As we said goodbye to our hire car (hire cars are notoriously expensive in this part of the world so two days was all we booked) we hopped onto the local bus from the centre of Bariloche to head out into Circuito Chico again and explore some more of the Lake District of Argentina. We started off by taking the bus just 5km outside of the city to Cerro Otto cable car which of course took us up to some incredible views and we wandered around and ate our packed lunch out in nature.

We arrived back down and missed the bus so took a taxi over to another area in circuito chico where things didn’t quite go as planned but we were luckily helped out by some friendly Argentinian people who also happened to be exploring the area. We found our way over to a small and super friendly kayak and dive centre and decided t get out onto the water for the last few hours of daylight. We are so glad we did, it was peaceful with absolutely no one else out there and the scenery of the Patagonian mountains in the background of the lakes was the best! We couldn’t have asked for a better way to enjoy our final sunset in Patagonia.

Upcoming Videos!

Join us next time as we arrive in the city of Mendoza right in Argentinas wine region where we of course waste no time searching for some great Malbec whilst doing a self guided wine tour on bikes! What could possibly go wrong?

HOW TO SEE THE 7 LAKES IN BARILOCHE, ARGENTINAS LAKE DISTRICT!

HOW TO SEE THE 7 LAKES IN BARILOCHE, ARGENTINAS LAKE DISTRICT!

After our crazy, eventful and long journey to get to Bariloche, you can see it here if you missed it: we wasted no time planning a few days out to see this beautiful place. This is our second day exploring Bariloche with our hire car and the best way to see the 7 lakes!

This route is beautiful and we had a lot of fun driving through these beautiful Patagonian views (makes a change from hiking!) This route of the 7 lakes is accessible for all and although you can do a bus tour from Bariloche, a private hire car is definitely the best way to see the lakes and the roads are smooth and easy to drive.

As always we hope you enjoy the video and for those planning a trip we hope this helps give you an idea of how you’d like to go about exploring the 7 lakes in Bariloche.

Exploring Patagonia's Autumn Wonderland | Bariloche, Argentina (travel vlog)

Patagonia in the fall is one of the most beautiful seasonal changes I have ever witnessed. In March/April, the small leaves of the Lenga trees turn every color from scarlet to maroon, like a crimson tide washing up the sides of the jagged mountains.

Wanting to see the beauty of nature up close, I explored the Patagonian Andes on foot, winding through gilded forests alongside crystal clear alpine streams, spotting mushrooms and birds, and climbing up on top of rocky ridge lines, even soaring through the sky with a parachute, getting a bird's eye view of the hundred lakes nestled below hundreds of snowcapped peaks. I got caught in a snowstorm and saw the world's largest flying bird in the wild, the Andean Condor.

The months I spent in Bariloche were incredible. I didn't show it in the video, but I made a couple of really good friends, whom I shared many wonderful experiences with. I also spent a lot of time in the cabin- once winter came, it was pretty cold and snowy and the roads and trails were treacherous. Bariloche is one of those places that I hope I venture back to one day.

Border Crossing & Things to do in El Chaltén, Argentina (Patagonia Expedition #05)

In the 5th episode of the Patagonia Expedition we are doing the 2 day border crossing from Villa O’Higgins to El Chalten and explore the best Things to do in El Chalten.

The Carretera Austral is a 1200km long road in the south of Chile which connects the most remote areas of the country. The ruta 7 is a paradise for adventure seekers as it is a mostly unpaved road which brings you to the lesser known parts of Patagonia in the stunning Los Lagos and Aysen Region.

Our plan was to get from Puerto Montt till Villa O’Higgins by thumb to get in touch with locals and fellow adventurers along the way. After finishing this adventure in the last episode we wanted to get to El Chaltén in Argentina with a visit to the O’Higgins Glacier and an overnight stay at the Farm Candelario Mancilla.

To do the border crossing from Villa O’Higgins to El Chaltén one first needs to take a boat to cross the O’Higgins lake and get to Candelario Mancilla on the other side. We opted in for the additional boat excursion to see the O’Higgins Glacier and have some whisky with ice from the Southern Patagonian Ice Field.

The next stretch we needed to hike for 22km to Laguna del Desierto where we took another boat to cross over to the southern shore where we spend the night camping before hitchhiking the remaining 37km to El Chaltén.

El Chaltén is the trekking capital of Argentina and one of the best spots for hiking and climbing in Patagonia. From the several hiking options in this area we chose the popular hike to Cerro Torre and Laguna Torre first before hiking to Fitz Roy and Laguna de los tres on another dayhike.

This part of the trip was executed within 1week by using altogether 2 boat, 1 bus and one car - following I list all the places we visited & Things to do in el Chalten:
- O'Higgins Glacier / Bernardo O’Higgins National Park
- Southern Patagonian Ice Field
- Candelario Mancilla
- Villa O'Higgins
- O’Higgins Lake / Lago O’Higgins or Lago San Martin
- Cerro Torre and Laguna Torre
- Monte Fitz Roy and Laguna de los tres / laguna sucia
- Lago del Desierto
- El Chalten

I'm excited to share all our experiences in Patagonia over the course of the next 6 weeks with you. In the next episode we will hike the Huemul Circuit in El Chalten, Argentina and meet impressive characters along the way.

BARILOCHE ARGENTINAS INCREDIBLE LAKE DISTRICT! Driving and hiking in Circuito Chico!

BARILOCHE ARGENTINAS INCREDIBLE LAKE DISTRICT!
Driving and hiking in Circuito Chico!

After our crazy, eventful and long journey to get to Bariloche, you can see it here if you missed it: we wasted no time planning a few days out to see this beautiful place. Starting by hiring a car from Da Car (lovely guy, we walked in and hired the car for the next day) for 48 hours we planned to drive around circuito chico (small circuit) which is a route that takes you around Argentinas incredible lake district! It really is incredible, so beautiful and calm and full of exciting places to stop off to suit all ages and abilities along the route.

We like many who visit the area wanted to get up high to get the best views so we started of at Km 17 and got on the Cerro Campanario which is a 7 minute chair lift that takes you straight up to what National Geographic have voted as one of the top 10 views in the world. It did not disappoint, we feel honestly so lucky to be seeing these places we can hardly believe our eyes, but the jaw dropping sights didn’t end there, we were about to be amazed multiple times in one day!

Our second stop along circuito chico was to do a short hike to the viewpoint of Llao Llao peak, the hike takes around 45 minutes uphill in the heat along a tree shaded (thankfully) trail and it’s so worth it and more peaceful of course than the top of Cerro Campanario (which you can also hike up if you wish). At the peak of Llao Llao we were once again spoiled with a different view overlooking the Llao Llao peninsula and the whole “Circuito Chico” loop. You can also see Lakes Moreno, López and Capilla peaks and the Tristeza branch of Nahuel Huapi lake.

We could have stayed there all day in the sunshine sitting on some peaceful rocks drinking in these Patagonian views but we made our way down to find another beautiful spot to watch the sun go down, before making our way after dark to the famous Patagonia beer garden for dinner and to sample some local beer. We drank our beers from our authentic Patagonia cups and watched as the scenery changed from Lakes and mountains to darkness, filled with the most beautiful starry sky out in the middle of nature! Wow.

Top 10 Places to visit along the Carretera Austral, Chile

In this video guide I summed up my personal top 10 places to visit along the Carretera Austral in the most beautifula part of Chilean Patagonia

The Carretera Austral is a mostly unpaved road that connects the most rural part of Patagonia in the very south of Chile. Tourism in this area is not as pronounced as it is in other parts of the country, as regular bus routes, accommodations and detailed info is hard to find.

But in this seclusion lies the attraction and a special charm. During my last trip I met very few travelers from Europe and North America. The locals welcomed me warmly and most attractions were not crowded.

After traveling this route twice via hitchhiking I thought it is about time that I put together a handy Carretera Austral guide which highlights the main sights along this 1200km long road. The video shows you my favorite places to visit from north to south, starting in Puerto Montt and finishing in Villa O’Higgins.

To do the Ruta 7 properly I recommend about 2 weeks - following I list all the places I visited & Things to do along the Carretera Austral:
- Fjords, Hornopiren, Pumalin Park, Chaiten
- Queulat National Park, Queulat Glacier, Puyuhuapi
- Rio Futaleufu, Futaleufu
- Cerro Castillo, Villa Cerro Castillo
- Marble Caves & Lago General Carrera, Puerto Rio Tranquilo

Travel Patagonia by Drone in 4k (Best of the Patagonia Expedition)

For me Patagonia is one of the most beautiful travel destinations on earth, to showcase this I created a montage of the best drone footage from my recent trip.

Over the course of 2 months I traveled Chilean as well as Argentine Patagonia from north to south to produce a documentary series called The Patagonia Expedition together with my friend Kristin Addis. The trip started in Bariloche (Argentina) and went via the Carretera Austral (Chile) down south to El Chaltén (Argentina) and finally to Torres del Paine (Chile).

It wasn't easy to travel with all the camera gear beside the other equipment we needed, especially considering all the camping stuff (tent, sleeping bag, cooking equipment etc) but I wanted to capture the beauty of traveling through Patagonia the best way possible.

Throughout the trip we got in touch with locals, stayed longer in one spot to really get to know the place and did all kinds of tough outdoor activities. Due to my former travels I already knew most of the places, got in touch with local friends and tourism businesses to help us create these videos. Not to mention the physical preparations which enabled us do all this activities under those partially tough conditions.

We are very grateful for all those experiences, new friendships and cooperations with locals as well as park rangers!

DRONE LAWS IN PATAGONIA
Please consider that all shots were filmed considering the drone laws in Argentina and Chile at the time we filmed there. Moreover we got special permissions by park rangers in some of the locations such as National Parks or filmed on private property with the permission of the owner (e.g. Torres del Paine).

Furthermore I'd like to point out that I took several weeks of practice in training spaces in Europe to ensure safe flights in Patagonia with my drone, especially due to the harsh weather and wind conditions.

In order to protect nature and wildlife in this sensitive part of the world I highly recommend to follow these rules as well if you plan to do something similar. Is the 7 Lakes road in Bariloche, Patagonia worth doing? (The TRUTH) | ARGENTINA | RTW Trip, Vlog20

Today I joined a tour to do one of the most popular activities in Bariloche, Patagonia. The 7 lakes tour is usually high on everybody’s list of things to do whilst in Bariloche, but after the tour it turns out I have a somewhat different opinion to most people.

…………………..

AUTUMN in PATAGONIA ???????????? | Hiking and Horse Trekking in Bariloche, Argentina

Autumn in Patagonia is a magical time of year and we arrived in mid-April just in time to enjoy all the fall foliage!

In this video we'll show you how we spent our first few days in Bariloche. This time around, we opted to stay in the outskirts of the city at Estancia del Carmen which overlooks Lake Gutierrez. It was a beautiful spot and we were surrounded by nature.

Since we were so close to the lake, we opted to do a horse trek around Lake Gutierrez, which was a lot of fun. We got to trek through forests, open plains surrounded by mountains, and along the lake's crystal clear shores.

We also hiked up to Laguna Verde via the Neumeyer Mountain Refuge. That was a breathtaking hike and the red autumn colours really made the green lagoon pop! Autumn is a great time of year to do this hike.

And for anyone interested in doing these excursions, we booked them through Vivencias Travel once we arrived in Bariloche.

We hope you enjoy this introduction to autumn in Bariloche, and we'll see you soon with more adventures in Patagonia!

Hiking the Huemul Circuit in El Chaltén, Argentina (Patagonia Expedition #06)

In the 6th episode of the Patagonia Expedition we are taking you with us on the tough 4 day Huemul Circuit hike close to El Chalten.

Now we decided to also hike the Huemul Circuit - a challenging multi day trek which I already completed 3 years ago. Though it is a tough trek it totally pays off with the incredible views you get: from the glaciers of the Patagonian Ice Field to the turquoise waters of the Viedma lake.

This part of the trip was executed within 4 days and this is what we saw:
- Southern Patagonian Ice Field
- Cerro Torre
- Monte Fitz Roy
- Laguna Toro
- Galciar Rio Tunel Inferior & Rio Tunel
- Paso del Viento
- Viedma Glacier / Glaciar Viedma
- Cerro Huemul / Vuelta Huemul
- Paso Huemul
- Lago Viedma
- Bahia Tempanos
- Bahia Rio Tunel
- Campo Hielo Sur
- El Chalten

I'm excited to share all our experiences in Patagonia over the course of the next 6 weeks with you. In the next episode we will visit the Perito Moreno Glacier near El Calafate, Argentina and meet impressive characters along the way.

Emotional and physical ups and downs hiking in Bariloche, Patagonia.

In one day, we climbed and descended TWO mountains. This video encompasses the panoramic highs and the bug bitten lows.

Bariloche is in the northern Lake District of Patagonia, on the Argentinian side. It's a wonderfully snug little town surrounded by the most fabulous trails and hikes.

We caught a bus to Cathedral and then hiked up to Refugio Grey for the first night and across to Refugio San Martin on the second night. It's a tough but rewards route, I'd highly recommend.
