Highpointing: Mount Elbert, the highest point in Colorado - Rooftops of America

Support the channel!

We're starting out this season with a big one! Mount Elbert is the highest point in Colorado and the third highest state highpoint. It is also the first 14er in the quest for 56. We took the south trail up the mountain which made a longer day, but the weather was excellent. Leadville has a fascinating history and is one of the highest incorporated cities in the the United States. It experienced the west when it was really wild. Join us as we explore America and go highpointing!

Mt. Harvard to Mt. Columbia Traverse, with maps & route description

My ascent of CO. collegiate 14ers Mt. Harvard & Mt. Columbia via their long & rugged connecting ridge on July 19, 2021. Mt. Harvard is Colorado's 3rd highest mountain, and was one of the first collegiate peaks to be named. Mt. Columbia, though less famous, is a fine mtn. in its own right. This journey takes me through the picturesque forests and alpine environs of Horn Fork Basin, to the lofty summit of Mt. Harvard, through the boulder-strewn off-trail stretches along the connecting ridge, and to the top of Mt. Columbia. At the beginning I discuss some of the history surrounding these mountains, and toward the end I explain how in terms of endurance stats and route-finding, this was one of the harder routes I have done. The length and ruggedness of the route has the potential of being a surprise to people, so beware. As always, included are maps and route description. Anyway, enjoy the footage! For my climb of neighboring collegiate 14er Mt. Yale: For my ascent of collegiate 14er Mt. Princeton: For the list of all my high mtn. climb videos: Below is a table of contents I have put together for this video:

He Found Freedom in the Desert ????????

As far out as one can get in the continental United States is a place tethered to nothing other than the open skies, dramatic landscapes, and a deep feeling of freedom. Removed from the stresses and restraints of the cities is a community living by their own rules. Today, we meet up with a local character named Will, who shows us what living out here is like in rural Utah and why he can't imagine it any other way.

Hiking to the highest point in South Dakota (Black Elk Peak)

Yup! We are still in South Dakota and hiking to the top of Black Elk Peak. The view of the Black Hills and Needles highway are so cool! ;) We didn't know much about this hike before (or really after) but loved it! I don't think we will get over how beautiful, and peaceful South Dakota is. It is no wonder it has become within our top 3 favorite states.

Colorado Centennial - Fletcher Mountain - Day Hike

Elevation: 13,958 (NAVD88)
Rank: 60 (Centennial)
Trailhead: Blue Lakes
Class: 2
Hike Date: July 18, 2019

Fletcher Mountain is a tall mountain in the Ten-Mile range just outside of Breckenridge. It’s just 40-some-odd feet short of being ranked as a 14er. After a long and snow-filled winter, I headed to the Blue Lakes Trailhead in an attempt to summit this centennial. Unfortunately, the snow at the peak was too steep and loose, so I turned around just 76 feet from the summit. While this technically makes this trek a fail-teener, I learned a lot on the way and enjoyed the experience. And at the end of the hike, I think that is what matters.

Mt. Yale - ascent of the collegiate peak along its SW slopes route, with maps & route description

Footage from my hike to the top of Collegiate Peak Mt. Yale on September 5, 2019 via its standard SW slopes route, along with maps and route description. This is a class 2 hike to a summit with a spectacular vantage point.

Mt. Evans - Summit Ridge, with map & route description

Footage from my climb along the high and scenic upper route to the summit of Mt. Evans, during an ascent from Echo Lake on July 17, 2019. This finish to the route has great views, some engaging climbing, and gives a better sense of Mt. Evans and its surrounding peaks. Includes map and route description. For my entire Mt. Evans play list:

*Note: In my narration and in the written caption from roughly 4:14 to 4:19, I mention the gentle southeast slopes. It is actually the northeast slopes I am talking about here, which I refer to accurately elsewhere in the video, including on the maps. (Oops)

Winter Backpacking Gear Test -- Solo Backpacking Trip on the Centennial Trail, SD

On November 2nd I went out on a section of the Centennial Trail near Mount Rushmore and the Harney Peak to test out some winter backpacking gear and prepare for snow and cold temps. There was little to no snow at the time. After having a really bad backpacking experience last March, during a blizzard, I was determined to learn from that experience and not to make the same mistakes again. No...I'll just make all new ones this winter. LOL.

Some major things I addressed on this trip were my sleep system, shelter, food, cook kit, clothing layers, maps/GPS, lighting, drinking water and some cold weather common sense.

Since I'm not allowed to have a campfire out in the Black Hills National Forest or pretty much anywhere in South Dakota, I have to get creative in how I do things.

I started my trip at the Calumet Trail Head on the Centennial trail right on the banks of the Sheridan Lake. It was pretty much all uphill both ways without a paddle for the rest of the trip. Because of one of the worse snow storms we've had in 30 years, the trail is littered with big trees that have split down the middle of cracked at the base and just fell over. This combined with some major elevation gain made for a challenging trip.

I quickly learned my GPS track file was old and outdated when the trail became obscured by debris and I no longer saw trail signs for miles. Always check these track files with updated maps to verify your route. I saw some really beautiful country and bushwhacked through a lot of places very few people get to see.

After the Calumet or Flume Trail Head I headed to the Samelius and then the Big Pine Trail Heads a total of 10 miles...camping near Big Pine up on a hill from the trail. The next morning I headed to the Willow Creek Trail Head about 3.5 miles from my campsite and proceeded to get totally lost up on a mountain side following that outdated GPS track. In all fairness, the Willow Creek Trail system was missing some very important go this way trail markers. LOL.

The temps started out at 28 degrees and went up to low 50's the first day. At night in my tent I recorded a range of 42 through 49 degrees...very comfortable. 2 days later the temp dropped to low low 20's. Guess I got lucky.

Total weight of my pack ended up at 43 lbs. with gear, water and food. It's a little heavier than I'd like but I was comfortable and had all the amenities to enjoy my time outdoors. 10 lbs. of that weight was water; 8 lbs. in my pack and 2 lbs. on my shoulder strap. And I drank it all. :) I did however; discover a perfect water source just 1.5 miles from my campsite. But there are very few water sources out here that can be depended upon year after year so I always bring water unless I'm absolutely sure.

Thanks for watching guys and if you have any questions about this gear ie...certain items, their weights and my experience with them, just drop me a comment or a PM.

This is KdawgCrazy...stay safe and get outdoors.

Mount Meeker via the Loft

A friend and I hiked to Mount Meeker yesterday. Easily top 5 hikes of all time.

Mount Meeker is a Centennial peak - the highest 100 peaks in Colorado. Meeker sits right next to Longs Peak which is the the only 14'er in RNMP.

We climbed to a place called the Loft. It's a col between Longs and Meeker (the lowest point of a ridge or saddle between two peaks).
From there we scrambled to an incredible summit block at 13,916'.

We hit the trail at 4:30a and saw the sunrise over Chasm meadow which was pretty cool. All told we hiked 13 miles with 5000' gain.

The Largest Organism on Earth is in… COLORADO!?

When you think about the largest organisms on Earth, you probably imagine elephants, blue whales, or some other animal. But did you know that the largest single organism can be found in a place you probably didn’t expect: Colorado! See why hiding in the mountains outside of Crested Butte on Kebler Pass there is a giant which only recently became known as the largest single organism on Earth....
