Florence in a Day: Hidden Gems & Top Attractions

Trastevere, Rome in a Day: Hidden Gems & Top Attractions

Hey guys, Sean here from The Roman Guy.

We’re here in Roma Termini station, it’s 6:05 AM and we have the 6:15 AM train for a Rome to Venice day trip.

We generally suggest you spend at least one night in Venice, but not every vacation has time for that. We understand so we’re going to show you how to see Venice in a day.

Venice is made up from 118 island and is home to over a quarter million people. The historical center itself and what we call the main island, is home to just around 55,000 residents.

With an average of over 30 million visitors per year, it’s a great idea to plan your day well.

Venice is about 15 times smaller than Rome, and all the top things to do are within walking distance from one another.

Venice is in the Veneto region of Italy, on the Adriatic Sea. By train it’s about 3.5 hours from Rome, 2 hours from Florence and 2.5 hours from Milan. Don’t get off at Venice Mestre, Venice S. Lucia is your stop!

From Venice Santa Lucia train station you can either take an expensive water taxi which is really cool, or the vaporetto which is like a boat version of a bus. You can take number 2 which will take you straight to St Mark's Square.

You can buy your tickets right outside the train station, and a single journey will cost you 7.50 euros as of 2018. Remember to validate the ticket before you get on board. The ticket is good for 75 minutes after you validate it and you can hop on and hop off as you go. The trip to St Mark's Square takes about 30 minutes.

St Mark’s Square is one of the most important and most recognizable squares in all of Italy. If you’re planning on going inside St Mark’s Basilica, you can either buy tickets online or book a guided tour to skip the line. Don’t show up without a ticket, or you’ll spend your day in Venice waiting in line.

Remember that entering St Mark’s Basilica, you’ll be entering a holy place, so make sure you have your shoulders and knees covered.

On the right hand side of St Mark's Basilica, you’ll find the Doge’s Palace. The special itinerary tour takes you to the once famous cell of Casanova and you also get to go across the Bridge of Sighs which is super cool!

You can visit the Doge’s Palace every day from 8:30am to 7pm April through October or until 5:30pm November to March.

This clock has been keeping time in Venice for over 500 years and built in the late 15th century.
Venetian legends hold that when the clock was revealed, it was so beautiful that the Doge had the clockmaker blinded so he could never create anything to rival it.

If you’re a lover of great views, definitely check out the Campanile or Bell Tower, open only April through to October.

Most people just think it’s the Libreria Acqua Alta is just a quirky store with gondolas inside but there’s actually a method to the madness. The name translates to the Library of High Water, most books are protected in bathtubs or even a gondola. This is because the canals flood and it’s the best way to keep the books protected.

Now we’ll head for a casual lunch at Osteria al Portego. In Venetian bars they sell something called Cicchetti, different mixed foods; fish, meat, all kind of fried items…

The Rialto Bridge is one of the most recognized attractions in Europe, let alone Venice. It was actually first built as a pontoon bridge in the 12th century. Later they rebuilt it out of wood but it burnt down a few times and collapsed on even more occasions. Finally they completed what you see today in 1591.

Nino & Friends is a cool little shop that we happened to stumble upon, they had the best cookie I’ve ever eaten in my life.

This city is a fishing village, so definitely walk through the fish market, which is a great picture of the local culture.

The Jewish Ghetto in Venice is the oldest Jewish ghetto in the world. It was created here in 1516.

In the Jewish Ghetto neighborhood you can find many cicchetteria and restaurants such as Mezzopieno, Bacaro dai Morosi and Birreria Zanon.

At this point, check your watch, see what time it is and start making your way back to the train station.

???????? First JEWISH GHETTO: Venice's Revitalized Historical Old Town {Budget Travel Italy}

The first Jewish Ghetto was established in 1516 after it was decreed all Jews in Venice were to live in one small designated area.

While residing in cramped and undesirable conditions, Venetian Jews continued to contribute to the Republic's society and economy. Known and desired for their banking skills, the role Jews played in the city state's commercial activities gave rise to Shakespeare's inspiration for The Merchant of Venice.

Matt walks through the neighborhood with Isaac, a local tour guide, to get a taste of life behind the gated community all those centuries ago.

The Jewish Ghetto, Venice Italy

Join me on this walk through the Jewish Ghetto in Venice Italy. On our walk we will pass the Gam Gam Restaurant, Gam Gam Goodies, a Judaica store, a kosher bakery, an art gallery, and the square where the historical synagogues are still standing from 500 years ago. Two were having active services when we visited. Then we cross over the Pente de Ghetto Veccio into the main Jewish Plaza. The Beit Chabad is there as well as 2 holocaust memorials. We had lunch at the Ghimmel Garden Restaurant; excellent food, beautiful atmosphere, but disappointed with the iced coffee. Definitely recommended. A little more touring around the plaza brought us to Banco Rosso, said to be the oldest remaining pawnshop/bank. Enjoy this tour, and please comment below to share your own experiences touring the Jewish Ghetto. Ciao!

Cannaregio Ghetto in Venice

The Ghetto is an area of the Cannaregiosestiere of Venice, divided into the Ghetto Nuovo (New Ghetto), and the adjacent Ghetto Vecchio (Old Ghetto). These names of the ghetto sections are misleading, as they refer to an older and newer site at the time of their use by the foundries: in terms of Jewish residence, the Ghetto Nuovo is actually older than the Ghetto Vecchio. The ghetto was connected to the rest of the city by two bridges that were only open during the day.

Visiting Cannaregio in Venice, the old Jewish district. Holiday in Venice, Italy.

Our first day in Venice we strolled through Cannaregio, one of the six historic sestieri, or districts of Venice.

It is the location of the first ghetto, and today is still a Jewish neighbourhood.

Apparently, the origin of the unique name, Cannaregio, derives from the presence of vast expanses of reeds that populated the area before it became inhabited

#venice #cannaregio #ghetto #jewishhistory

We visited the Scala Mata gallery which is exhibiting the artwork of Jewish painter and illustrator Michal Meron. Her brightly coloured paintings illustrate the Jewish history of Venice. One of Michal's well known pieces is the illustrated Torah.

The streets of the Venice ghetto

On 29 March 1516, the Venetian Republic created the first ghetto on a small island in the north-western sestiere of Cannaregio. Five hundred years later to the very day, I went there for the visit you can see in this film. As a historian of the Holocaust, it seemed appropriate to visit on this day as I was so close to Venice in my motorhome.

The decision taken in 1516 to separate the Jews from the other residents of the city was possibly due to the deline of Venice as a power. The Venetians were suspicious of all and foreign embassies such as those of France, England and Spain had also been forced to leave for the area of Cannaregio. This was a former industrial area - such as had existed in the fifteen century and earlier.

Whereas Jews had to live in the ghetto, it was not so bad there as to stop others from joining them. The Schola Canton synagogue was founded in 1531, only fifteen years after the ghetto! People escaping persecution in other parts of Europe ended up in Venice. Two synagogues were built which can be seen today. Jews had to be in the ghetto at night when the doors were locked - and pay for its 'security', however they were free to leave during the day although they had to wear a special badge which marked them as Jews. They were also permitted to be involved in some businesses. Christians could visit Jewish friends in the ghetto.

The population was quickly increased as Jews who had been expelled from Spain and Portugal at the end of the fifteen century joined them.

Looking at it today, you will consider that living conditions were cramped and insanitary - however many people in Europe lived liked this - and especially in Venice where there was little room for horizontal growth. Another problem was lack of privacy as rooms could often only be reached through other families’ living space.

The Venice ghetto came to an end with the Republic of Venice. The decline of Venice had taken centuries but by 1797 the former mighty imperial city was no more. War, disease and emigration had taken its toll and Napoleon finished it off dividing the possessions of the city state between himself and the Habsburgs who got the city itself!

Jews remained in Venice and suffered under the race laws of Fascist Italy which were introduced in 1938. Venice was occupied by Nazi Germany in September 1943 and two major deportations carried people off to the death camps. We can see bronze reliefs dedicated to the victims of the Holocaust in the main ghetto square today.

There are now around 600 Jewish people resident in the former ghetto where Venetian Jewish food can be bought and there are functioning synagogues, cultural centre and museum.

A tour in the Ghetto of Venice

A walk in the Jewish Ghetto of Venice, in the district of Cannaregio. It is the first Ghetto in history, the name itself 'ghetto' has its origin in Venice. The ghetto has three sections, with tall houses called 'skyscrapers'. A glimpse into the five synagogues and into the art galleries and other stores.

VENICE, Italy 4K Walk Overlooked Gems- Cannaregio to Castello

Hello friends! Today, we will take a walk in Venice. Venice is shaped like a fish on the map. We will start at the head of the fish in the Cannaregio to the tail of the fish in Castello. Along the way, we will go to interesting places that are slightly off the beaten path and might be missed by the casual visitor.

I have to admit I struggled with this video as there was just so much beauty and history to Venice. Venice is truly one of a kind and it is charming everywhere you go. In the end, I have decided to split the walks into multiple parts. I hope you enjoy part 1, more to to come soon!

The video was recorded in June, 2022 during hot summer days!

Please check out our other travel tours on the channel including a tour of colorful Burano.

Travel Venice: Cannaregio - The Real Venice

Sonia Gil travels north on the Venetian canals to her favorite neighborhood in Venice, the Sestiere di Cannaregio. She takes us to the Ghetto Nuovo, center of the Jewish Community, as well as some hidden nooks for a glimpse into the realness and joy of a real Venetian neighborhood. Exclusive hotels facing the Laguna Veneta, a stop at a local bar for a classic Venetian cocktail, and a gorgeous sunset make the spirit of Cannaregio ever-welcoming.
