Girl in The Glass Box @Rosehill Cemetery Chicago

Rosehill Cemetery (founded 1859) is an American rural cemetery on the North Side of Chicago, Illinois, and at 350 acres (1.4 km2), is the largest cemetery in the City of Chicago. The name Rosehill resulted from a City Clerk's error – the area was previously called Roe's Hill, named for nearby farmer Hiram Roe. He refused to sell his land to the city until it was promised that the cemetery be named in his honor.
It is located in the north east section of the Lincoln Square community area.

The Hidden Truth of Lincoln Park, Chicago City Cemetery

It's hard to believe now but in the mid 1800's Lincoln Park was a remote part of Chicago used as a home for cholera victims and then became a public cemetery for the poor, victims of disease and about 4,000 rebel troops. As during the Civil War Chicago was home to Camp Douglas a notorious prisoner of war facility.
As the city moved north people became uneasy about being so close to so many who had dies of communicable disease. So after Lincoln was assassinated the city decided to dig up the bodies and start turn the area into parkland. What we have today is over 1,200 acres of park hugging the lake. It is home for Peacefest and has a zoo lagoon, conservatory and just about everything else you find in parks. It is also home to some magnificent public art which we are also presenting on this station.
So here's the plaque and as you look around imagine less than 200 years ago it was nothing but swampland and dead bodies.

Chicago's Spooky Spots

Chicago, with its rich history, has a collection of spooky spots and haunted locations that attract those interested in the paranormal. Here are some eerie places in Chicago:

Resurrection Mary at Resurrection Cemetery:

Resurrection Mary is one of Chicago's most famous ghost stories. Legend has it that a young woman named Mary was killed in a car accident after leaving a dance at the O'Henry Ballroom. She's said to hitchhike along Archer Avenue, and sightings of a mysterious woman in a white dress continue to be reported near Resurrection Cemetery.

The Congress Plaza Hotel:

This historic hotel, located on Michigan Avenue, is rumored to be haunted. Guests have reported ghostly apparitions, strange noises, and unsettling experiences. The hotel has a long history, dating back to the late 19th century, and some believe that past guests may still linger.

H.H. Holmes Murder Castle Site:

Infamous serial killer H.H. Holmes built a hotel near the site of the 1893 World's Columbian Exposition. The hotel, often referred to as the Murder Castle, had secret rooms and passages where Holmes committed gruesome murders. While the original building is gone, the site remains a chilling part of Chicago's history.

The Red Lion Pub:

This Lincoln Park pub has a history dating back to the 1880s and is rumored to be haunted. Patrons and staff have reported strange occurrences, including unexplained sounds, flickering lights, and ghostly apparitions.

The Drake Hotel:

Another historic Chicago hotel, The Drake, is rumored to have paranormal activity. Guests have reported encounters with the ghost of a woman in a 1920s-era dress. The legend suggests that she leapt to her death from the hotel after discovering her husband's infidelity.

Bachelor's Grove Cemetery:

Located in the suburbs of Chicago, Bachelor's Grove Cemetery is known for its eerie atmosphere. Visitors claim to have seen ghostly apparitions, floating orbs, and other unexplained phenomena. The cemetery has a reputation for being one of the most haunted in the region.
Remember that these stories are part of local folklore, and personal experiences with the paranormal can vary. Whether you're a believer or a skeptic, exploring these locations can provide a fascinating glimpse into Chicago's haunted history.

Searching For Resurrection Mary

Most of you out there may not know about this legend but it's very popular in the Chicago-Land Area. Resurrection Mary, according to the legend, is a hitch hiker type ghost that will appear on Archer Ave between the Willowbrook Ball Room in Willow Springs, Illinois and Resurrection Cemetery in Justice, Illinois. She is described as a young woman wearing a long white dress and long blonde hair. She would ask the driver to drive to and drop her off at Resurrection Cemetery. When the driver drops her off and let's her off, she disappears into thin air. The legend says Resurrection Mary was a young woman who went to the Willowbrook Ball room with her boyfriend. At some point the two got into an argument about something and then she got mad at her boyfriend and walked home on her own. While she was on her way home, she was hit by a car and died from the accident. Many people in history have claim to have seen the legendary Resurrection Mary. I decided go here and drive on Archer Ave from the Willowbrook Ballroom to Resurrection Cemetery to see if I can find the legendary Resurrection Mary.

Chicago's Cursed Cemetery: A Summertime Visit to Bachelors Grove

A visit to Bachelors Grove Cemetery in Bremen Township, Ill., in August 2013. While there, we encountered a man named Rick who was involved in the cemetery's restoration. I didn't record him, but he spoke with us for about a half an hour about the cemetery's history, the legends, and the politics around its maintenance. Among other things, he told us that a dead deer had been found slung over the fence the week before and that a woman had recently been cut across the neck by barbed wire strung across the entrance. He also said there had recently been found a candle and dead animal on each of the cemetery's grave stones. While not himself a believer in the paranormal, he made it plain that there is good reason to exercise caution while visiting here.

A young couple out for an evening of fun at the The Oh Henry Ballroom in the 1930's. They argue and Mary runs off to hitch a ride home only to be killed by a hit and run driver. Since that time she has been picked up several times always trying to get to the same place Resurrection Cemetery where she is buried!

We have another clip on ChiTownView that digs deeper into the history of Willow Springs.

We also came across this post that documents some other shady goings on along Archer Ave. in this area.
