Helsinki, City Tour - Finland 4K Travel Channel

Helsinki is the capital of independent Finland, since 1917. Before it was under the Swedish and Russian rule. The capital region has a population of approximately 1.4 million inhabitants, which is about one-quarter of the population of Finland. The second day of our stay, we choose a Hop-on Hop-off bus for a Helsinki City Tour. We get on the bus at Aleksanterinkatu and drive to the Senate Square. After we have passed the South Harbor, from where the ferries leave for Stockholm, we continue to the West Harbor.
From here, the big cruise ships and the ferries sail to Estonia. Before this, we pass the marina in Merisatama and Cafe Ursula. In Eira, there is a small bathing beach, one of the few in the urban area.
Past the Saluhall, where a secondhand market takes place, we reach the temple mountain with the Temppeliaukio church. It is one also known as rock church. The church was carved 5 to 8 meters into the rock. With the copper domed roof, it reaches a height of 13 m. From the outside, it is hardly recognizable. You only see the rock hill. The architects Timo and Tuomo Suomalainen built the church in 1969.
We continue to the Sibelius Monument. Johan Julius Christian Sibelius was one of the most important Finnish composers. He lived in Helsinki from 1865 to 1957. His popularity reaches far to Berlin, Vienna and New York. The monument, created by Eila Hiltunen in 1967, symbolizes an organ.
We take a walk to the next place of interest, the Olympic stadium. Built between 1934 and 1938, it should serve for the Olympics in 1940, which was canceled due to World War II. The tower is 72.71 m high. This corresponds exactly to the distance of the Olympic gold-winning throw of the Finnish javelin thrower Matti Järvinen, in 1932. From 2016, the stadium will be completely renovated and reopened in 2019.
Once again we choose the bus and drive to the Finnish National Museum. The Parliament building is just a few meters away. But at the time of our visit, it is behind a printed protective covering. On the opposite site is the Musiikkitalo (House of Music), a concert hall that is open, so we can take a look. We leave the building on the other side and reach a large square.

Suomi (Finland) Vacation Travel Video Guide

Travel video about destination Suomi in Finland.
Suomi: The Land Of A Thousand Lakes. No other European country is as influenced by the interplay of both water and land as Finland. The impressive beauty of its unspoiled scenery is plain to see and yet most of Finland, despite each wonderful aspect of its natural landscape, is still sparsely populated. Its endless forests truly make Finland one of Europe’s last great wildernesses. Only in Finland’s modern capital of Helsinki does the population exceed more than a hundred inhabitants per square kilometre. The city’s cathedral has become one of the most famous landmarks in Helsinki that, along with the general ground plan of the entire city, can be traced back to a Prussian. Carl Ludwig Engel was the man responsible for the building and design of the Old Town and Classical Helsinki was born. Due to their strategic location the islands of Suomenlinna just outside Helsinki played a central role in the country’s defences and were transformed into a huge fortress. Finland particularly lives up to its reputation as ‘The Land Of A Thousand Lakes’, in Karelia, where huge forests have created a prosperous paper-making industry. Saimaa Lake is the fourth largest lake in Europe and covers an area of four thousand three hundred square kilometres and together with several adjoining lakes it is the largest body of lakeland in Europe. In the 1920’s the local media spread the word that Santa Claus did not live at the North Pole but in the extreme north of Finland. Since then the Santa Claus Village has become a huge commercial success. The Santa Claus Post Office is open throughout the entire year to both young and old alike and several shops offer a large range of souvenirs. With around a hundred and twenty thousand inhabitants, Oulu is the sixth largest city in Finland. Unlike the solitude of Lapland the popular shopping centre of Rotuaari has all the atmosphere of a major city. The extreme north of Europe is one of the last great natural habitats of this otherwise densely populated continent. Thus the magnificent splendour of Suomi lives on right up until the present day.
Situated in the extreme north of Europe, this land of a thousand lakes and endless forests is one of the world's last great natural habitats.

DNA of Helsinki

Helsinki, the capital of Finland, is a vibrant seaside city of beautiful islands and great green parks. The city’s rhythm is laid back yet at the same time refreshingly active.

The Finnish people’s DNA is the most diverse in all of Europe. Extremes are literally in our blood.

In honour of Finland’s centenary celebration, we’ll extract Finnish people’s DNA from the extreme points of the country. The cello metal band Apocalyptica will then turn the genetic data into an original piece of music.

The Symphony of Extremes premieres in late 2017.

What makes Finnish DNA so special and how the DNA is extracted into the music?
