Top 10 Things to do on St Helena Island

My Top Ten Things To Do on St Helena Island

During my seven months on St Helena I have had the opportunity to explore this wonderful remote island in the South Atlantic. Only 4500 people and 1000s of miles from Brazil or Angola/Namibia. It is truly remote. The Saint people are some of the most warm and welcoming people I have ever had the pleasure or living and working with.
This is my top ten things to o on St Helena Island when you are here.

Saint Helena – wildlife and heritage

Watch the three-part Britain's Treasure Islands documentary series on BBC FOUR, starting Tue 12 Apr 2016 21:00. (repeated Wed 13 Apr 2016 20:00).

This mini-documentary explores the wildlife, culture and history of the remote island of Saint Helena, a UK Overseas Territory in the Atlantic. We discover Longwood House, where Napoleon Bonaparte was imprisoned for the last six years of his life after the Battle of Waterloo. And we find Saint Helena's unique wirebird and follow its confirmation. Saint Helena is home to many unique plants and arguably the island's greatest treasure; its unique arthropods (more than 400 of which occur on Saint Helena and no where else on Earth).

This film is one of forty mini-documentaries made from the footage not used in the broadcast series.

A drive across Saint Helena: Blue Point to Half Tree Hollow

Saint Helena is only 10 miles across at its widest, but it's so rugged that it feels way bigger. This is a roughly half-hour drive (sped up 8x) from Blue Point across Sandy Bay Ridge to Half Tree Hollow.

1204 St Helena

Another video from our circumnavigation on our 12.5 metre steel yacht which started in April 2005 at Southsea Marina in the UK and ended back there in November 2013. It was a blast.

During our crossing of the South Atlantic from Namibia to Brazil, we stopped off in St Helena for a few weeks, here is a memento of our visit in April 2014, a beautiful island.

RMS St Helena Farewell from St Helena February 2018

This Video is an informal record of the events between 1st & 10th February 2018 when the last remaining Royal Mail Ship to actually carry the Royal Mail departed for on her last scheduled voyages to Ascension and Cape Town from Saint Helena.

The video's target audience is all those Saints and Adopted Saints that could not be on Island to see these historic events and is shot as if you were stood there with no tripod (Too heavy for the 20kg on the flights to St Helena), so please bear this in mind when viewing

There is no fancy music or commentary - just a few captions to indicate key events.

For those on St Helena I have left a copy of the Video at the Saint FM Studio by kind permission of Tammy Williams where can copy the File - You will need a USB stick with at least 3.2GB space on it.

Update: February 2019:

The RMS was sold shortly after withdrawal to MHG and acted as a Armoury ship to anti piracy operations in the Indian Ocean until October 2018 as the MNG Tahiti . She was then sold to a new group and renamed St. Helena and she returned to Portland (UK) that month for a 2 year refit. It was announced at a launch aboard the St. Helena in the Pool of London on 31st January 2019 that there will be a new type of motorsport starting in January 2021 called Extreme E where the St. Helena will be the Mobile paddock and home for this exciting new eco friendly series. A great upcycling of this Iconic ship See these videos: and

Jacobs Ladder, St Helena Island

A video from one of the most isolated places on the planet, St Helena Island in the middle of the South Atlantic.

Climbing Jacob's Ladder in St. Helena

Jacob's Ladder is a staircase comprising 699 stone steps, from sea level in Jamestown up to the top of Ladder Hill (183 m). The way is steep (44 degrees!) and the day was hot, but I walked to the top in 8 minutes. The island record is 4 1/2 minutes. I enjoyed my time on tiny St. Helena, a beautiful little island in the middle of the South Atlantic, more than 1,000 miles off the coast of Namibia.
