Why the government prefers Heathrow

This short animation provides background and rationale for the government’s support of Heathrow’s north-west runway as the preferred option for south-east airport expansion. The government’s draft NPS, Airports National Policy Statement: new runway capacity and infrastructure at airports in the south-east of England, lays down the planning policy framework which the applicant for a new north-west runway would have to comply with in order to get development consent. It also sets out the need for additional airport capacity in the south-east and the reasons why a north-west runway at Heathrow is the government’s preferred scheme. For further information see:

Airspace changes explained – Heathrow airspace and future operations consultation

We want local communities to tell us what we should take into account when designing new flight paths – both for expansion, and to make better use of our existing runways.
In this consultation, we are presenting the geographic areas within which flight paths could be positioned. We are asking what local factors should be taken into account when developing new flight paths within these geographically defined areas known as ‘design envelopes’.

The design envelopes presented cover both:

- Potential flight paths for an expanded Heathrow i.e. with a third runway; and

- Potential new flight paths for some arrivals to make better use of our existing two runways i.e. prior to the operation of a third runway.

Heathrow Expansion under fire!??

Parent Company of BA, IAG, has criticised Heathrow’s preferred masterplan for expansion, blaming high costs, more than double than the figure that Heathrow hopes to keep the budget, with a costly infostructure being ‘unutilised’. This is all very valid, but this may be risky for the group with the biggest presence at the airport. They are really playing with fire! But what and who is behind all this fuss? Well, you’ll have to watch to find out!

Heathrow CEO responds to Airports Commission conditions

Heathrow has today announced it will meet and, in most cases, exceed the conditions set out in the Airports Commission’s recommendation for Heathrow expansion.

In July last year, the independent Airports Commission unanimously and unambiguously recommended expanding Heathrow, after a three year, £20 million study into the best option for maintaining the UK’s global aviation hub status.
