The 5 Best Luxury Okavango Delta Lodges, Botswana.

The Okavango Delta is one of Africa's most stunning wilderness areas and is home to a diverse array of wildlife. There are many lodges in the area, but here are five of the best:

Mombo and Little Mombo Camp: A luxury safari camp that will fulfill your wildest dreams.
Revel in Mombo's chic sustainability. The Okavango Delta has some of the best game viewing on Earth. This luxury safari camp is in a prime position - where the main Okavango River splits into its primary channels. Discover what some say is Botswana's best year-round game-viewing destination, with thrilling predator-prey interaction dominated by big cats.

Xigera Safari Lodge: Xigera Safari Lodge offers 12 beautiful suites, each resting effortlessly in this wild landscape. Amid this remarkable setting, Xigera's design aesthetic is wholeheartedly dedicated to celebrating African art, design, and creativity. Each piece has been handcrafted and inspired by the incredible natural surroundings in Botswana; every experience can be tailor-made to your wishes… an entirely new imagining of the African bush.

Duba Plains Camp: Duba Plains Camp, the epitome of the Botswana safari, sits in the heart of the Okavango Delta. The private 33,000-hectare Duba Plains reserve is a palm-dotted island, flood plains, and woodland matrix. This is the area that Great Plains Conservation co-founders, National Geographic filmmakers, conservationists, and explorers Dereck and Beverly Joubert chose for their home base for filming.

The camp at Duba Plains offers five bespoke suites. The camp design ensures it blends into the landscape while evoking the classic African safari style of the 1920s. All the rooms are on raised recycled railway sleeper decking. Each suite affords guests stunning views of the surrounding floodplain and the steady stream of wildlife parading past. Each suite has a lounge area and beautifully appointed en-suite facilities: a flush loo, double vanities, indoor and outdoor showers, and a luxurious bath. Ceiling fans and an environmentally friendly air-conditioning system over the bed ensure a comfortable climate. Enjoy your private verandah, complete with a plunge pool and shaded sala.

Jao Camp: Where Earth meets river meets wetland lies Jao. Surrounded by riverine forests and vast floodplains, Jao is the archetypal Okavango Delta camp and a lush haven for wildlife. Boat in when the waters rise or travel by game drive vehicle when summer warms the land. At Jao, the endlessly dynamic waters provide a continuous element of surprise and all manner of experiences to explore this Botswana paradise.

Sandibe Camp: In the heart of the Delta, on the edge of a waterway, you'll find Sandibe Okavango Safari Lodge. Situated on a diverse, wildlife-rich, private concession, Sandibe has exclusive traversing rights over a vast 22,500 hectares (55,600 acres) of wildlife land bordering the Moremi Game Reserve.

The inspired organic design of the lodge melts into the surrounding forest canopy of wild palms and gnarled fig trees. Trees will shade you as you approach the lodge; an intriguing curl and sweep of shingled wood come into view, resembling a giant-scaled pangolin at rest. Stairs open onto the high ceilings of the copper-toned, glassless guest area overlooking the Delta. The wooden deck stretches beyond the roof from this central dining area, while the upstairs bar and lounge extend along an elevated walkway to a viewing platform.

A series of decks descend to the forest floor culminating in a log boma, with a small gym and private massage sala close by. Interior finishes showcase Botswana's artisans' craftsmanship and feature intricate basket ware, sculpted wooden tables, and unique feature pieces. While the main guest area is within the forest, the twelve guest suites peep out from beneath its canopy. Raised above the papyrus-lined banks like golden weaver nests, each is a cocoon of privacy with breathtaking views, a private plunge pool, and a cozy fireplace.

Brunch with Dereck & Beverly Joubert

Dereck and Beverly are award-winning filmmakers, National Geographic Explorers-in-Residence and wildlife conservationists, who have been filming, researching and exploring in Africa for over 30 years. Their mission is the conservation and understanding of the large predators and other key wildlife species that determine the course of all conservation in Africa. They are the founders of the Big Cats Initiative with National Geographic, which currently funds 149 grants in 27 countries for the conservation of big cats.

The Jouberts have made over 25 films for National Geographic, published 11 books, half a dozen scientific papers, and have written many articles for the National Geographic Magazine. Beverly Joubert is also an acclaimed photographer and her international exhibitions have further helped to raise awareness for the plight of big cats across the world.

Their films have received international recognition with major accolades including 8 Emmys, a Peabody, Wildscreen Panda Awards and a Lifetime Achievement Award at the Japan Wildlife Film Festival, to name but a few. The Jouberts were also awarded the World Ecology Award alongside Prince Charles and Richard Leakey, and in 2009, they were inducted into the American Academy of Achievement with the likes of Archbishop Desmond Tutu. In the 2013 Jackson Hole Film Festival Dereck and Beverly won the Outstanding Achievement Award. In 2011, Dereck and Beverly were honored with the Presidential Order of Meritorious Service by the President of Botswana, for their work within the country. In 2014 Dereck and Beverly won the prestigious lifetime achievement award from the SAFTA's.

In recent years, the Jouberts have expanded their conservation outreach through another business venture, ‘Great Plains Conservation’. Dereck is CEO of the company, and together with their business partners, they have found a way to bring together conservation, communities and conservation tourism to fund large tracts of land that can be protected for the local wildlife and the surrounding communities. Today that land totals about 1 million acres in Africa.

Botswana Vacation Travel Video Guide

Travel video about destination Botswana.
Botswana is the largest natural paradise in southern Africa. Limited tourism, a combination of untouched wilderness and the comfort and luxury of a handful of safari camps, makes this Africa’s model country. Our journey begins in nearby Zimbabwe that is located close to Botswana’s northern frontier at Victoria Falls that is undoubtedly one of the most impressive natural wonders in the world. Eighty kilometres west and we have crossed the Botswana border and arrive in the first large city in the north of the country, Kasane, that is located on the Chobe River and marks the country’s frontier with Namibia. In addition to growing tourism the fishing industry is also important to Kasane’s economy. The river contains an abundance of fish and so the local fishermen are provided with a good income to support their families. Since 1915 Ma-Un has been Botswana’s main city and until the beginning of the 1990s was only accessible via dusty gravel roads, a border town on the edge of a vast wilderness. The state run Moremi National Park that extends for around a hundred thousand hectares is the largest nature reserve in the Okavango Delta. It is located on Chief’s Island, the largest island in the region. In recent years further private wildlife reserves have been established that are well worth a visit and are also strictly controlled and protected natural habitats. Amid the African wilderness we arrive at a luxurious lodge that is not only the ideal starting point for many safaris but also provides a good degree of relaxation after an exhausting day out. Suddenly two members of the San Tribe approach the lodge. These ‘Bushmen’ will accompany us on our journey into the Kalahari Desert that is also their home. Elephant herds on the Chobe River, the vast wilderness of the Kalahari and the mystique of the Okavango Delta help to make Botswana one of the last great paradises on Earth!

Epic Botswana Adventure

This epic bush safari follows the magnificent Chobe River as it snakes its way through Botswana where you will detour to observe the incredible Okavango Delta and end at the salt pans of the Makgadikgadi National Park.

Your adventure begins at the Chobe River, the jewel that flows through Botswana, Nambia and eventually greets the Zambezi in the east. Home to the greatest concentration of wildlife in the world, it's easy to see why. The crisp, flowing waters are teeming with fish that feed crocodiles, birds of prey and draw game from miles around. This congregation in turn attracts the attention of Africa's top predators, among them the lion, leopard and cheetah and the massive African elephant, there to assert her dominance as the largest land mammal of them all. The Chobe draws a whole ecosystem to it's banks and you will be the spectator.

Mid-safari you will meet the mighty Okavango Delta, one of the most surprising natural phenomena in Africa. Once an ancient lake, the earth's gradual tectonic shift has transformed the Okavango Delta into a depressed trough in the northern part of Botswana that collects almost 12 cubic kilometers of rain water each season, a blessing to the numerous wildilfe that rely on these annual waters as they migrate in search of new grazing lands and a fresh water supply. No where else in the world will you see such a large body of water with no source. The marshy Okavango homes hippopotamus, elephant, the crocodile and more birdlife than you could ever hope to photograph.

The surrounding landscape of the Okavango is brush savannah, sneaky waterways and green forest. This is where you will be introduced to the pristine Moremi Game Reserve, where variety means plenty. At Moremi you will have the chance to see the rare Sitatunga and Lechwe antelope. Buffalo, zebra and wildebeest glide nervously through the reserve, always on the look out for the top predator lurking in the shade. Such a diverse part of the world wouldn't be complete without the Wild Dog; one of Africa's most threatened species. The Moremi has made it their mission to preserve this precious pack animal.

Continue south east and you will come to a surreal landscape of dusty, white-baked salt pans of the Makgadikgadi Pans National Park. Remember the Okavango Delta's former glory as part of an ancient lake? The Makgadikgadi salt pans are also relics of a landscape that has been transformed by the earth's relentless passage through time. The Makgadigadi also fill with water during the wet season, drawing migratory birds such as the Great White pelican to this temporary oasis. While the salt pans might seem stark or even brittle during the peak of the dry season, wildlife can still be found steaking their place in this wonderfully abundant country.

Botswana: Where to go and what to see

Virtually synonymous with the Kalahari Desert, much of Botswana is flat and dry, covered in thorny acacia trees and home to enormous salt pans and rolling grasslands. Rainfall is highest in northern Botswana where vast open woodlands dominate the environment and several globally important wetland habitats - the Okavango Delta, the Linyanti Swamps and the Chobe River - support huge numbers of animals.
Botswana is a haven for wildlife and several of its protected areas - the Chobe National Park, the Okavango Delta and Moremi Game Reserve in particular - rank among Africa's best game-viewing destinations. Botswana's Kalahari parks are some of the wildest and least developed in the region but offer excellent opportunities for game viewing, especially in early summer when several local zebra migrations occur.

Botswana's wildlife highlights include Africa's greatest concentrations of elephant, fantastic bird watching, abundant predators and the continent's largest population of African wild dog. Botswana's lions are particularly famous for their size and their ability to prey on large animals such as hippo, buffalo and even young elephants.

The evergreen jewel of the Okavango Delta is at the heart of Botswana’s safari attractions, flanked in the east by the rolling savannah of the Savuti and the teeming elephant paradise of the Chobe.

The Mongoose Mafia of Jao

Jao Island, where the prestigious Jao Camp is beautifully located, has its own characterful mob of banded mongoose that have earned a place in many visitors’ hearts. These endearing small carnivores are a real treat to watch and get to know. They are highly social and live in colonies, being most active by day. They are highly territorial and social cohesion is maintained by amazing vocalisations, scent marking and social grooming amongst the group. The adult males also act as babysitters of the young pups. They are incredible as they go about their business, a rather frenetic scurry all over the place, foraging mainly for invertebrates located with their acute sense of smell. Be sure to look out for Jao mongoose family on your next visit.

Zimbabwe Safari Webinar

This special webinar introduces our Zimbabwe Safari, with Trip Leader Mark Butch Butcher as guest presenter. A superb safari guide, Butch holds the highly coveted Zimbabwe guide license and was a winner of Guardian Travel’s prestigious Ethical award for 2014. Deeply committed to wildlife conservation and the surrounding communities, Butch has been at the forefront of the most innovative conservation programs in the country, involving villagers in the protection of wildlife, and ensuring that they benefit from safaris. Endlessly energetic, hugely entertaining, and limitless in his knowledge of Africa’s wildlife, Butch is a force of nature and an absolute delight to travel with.

Come along and savor lantern-lit dinners in the bush, sundowners aboard a vintage railway car, visits with local schoolkids (you’ll even learn a few words of their click language), game drives with the flexibility to get out and hike, and paddling canoes on the Zambezi. Zimbabwe is the ultimate safari destination—wonderfully wild and still utterly uncrowded. Our exciting—and active—adventure brings you to an extraordinary array of environments, with phenomenal wildlife experiences throughout.
