► More street food in Uttarakhand:

Welcome to Haridwar, a popular pilgrimage destination in Uttarakhand where devotees throng to seek divine blessings by taking a dip in the holy Ganges. This sacred city has some great street food that keeps the masses active and going. We were there to explore the street food scene in these busy lanes. Our host for the day was Mr. Jain who is the owner of the famous Jain Chat Bhandar. We are highly grateful for his support. An avid foodie and a genial gentleman, Mr. Jain took us on an immersive walk down the streets guiding us about the popular eats.

We started with the famous Surya Ki Dal. It's morning time and a crowd had gathered to buy a plate of this nutritious snacks. It was a boiled moong dal dish that has been spiced up with some spices. Eating it out of leaf plate added to the taste.

Next was the turn of a very old sweet shop that specializes in traditional sweets like milk cake, lauki ka lauj, khoya burfi, rabri etc. We were impressed by the quality and taste of these popular fares.

From there we went to Bhagwati Chole Bhandar for tasting the adda and chole ka paani. Adda is bun soaked in Chole ki sabzi. They serve it with chutney, ginger julienne, fresh coriander. The snack was followed by the channe ka pani which is a spicy yet hearty broth made from the leftover water from the boiled chickpeas.

We crossed over to the opposite side for Paan, in order to cleanse our palette and prime them for more food. Then we went to Thakur Raghubir Sigh ji kachoriwala for khasta kachori and sabji. Served in leaf bowl, it was a treat. But their kheer mohan was too sweet for us.

We then took a Nimbu shikanji break at Shiv Soda before arriving at Mathura wale ki prachin dukan for their delicious puri sabzi platter. The desi ghee fare consisting urad dal puri, pumpkin and potato sabzi was quite gratifying. We followed it with tiny potli samosas and chandrakala.

Our next shop was the famous eatery of our host. Jain Ji is loved not only for his playful treats but also for his genial personality. We were touched by the endearing manner in which he introduced us to his bestsellers. People are crazy about his kanji vada, magic chaat and dahi patashe and so are we. The best part of the eating experience here was the malu leaf bowls in which these dishes were served.

Our next target was Mathura Wale Ke malai samosa, rabri and chocolate burfi. The khoya stuffed malai samosa and rabri were simply toothsome. The chocolate burfi had the taste of real chocolate.

While walking towards our next stop Har Ki Pauri ghat-for Ganga Arti-we stopped by a cart selling star fruits and couldn’t resist ourselves from taking a bite of this nutritious fruit. The sour ones are rich in vitamins.

Soon it was time to witness the marvellous aarti or prayer ritual where the holy Ganges river is worshipped with mantras and huge lamps. The vibe of the collective faith of the devotees thronging the ghat was a surreal experience.

After this divine encounter we went to Guru Vaisnav bhojnalaya for a proper traditional meal consisting of roti, rice, dal, seasonal vegetable preparation, papad and raita. We enjoyed every morsel of this home styled desi ghee meal that was prepared over wood fire stove.

After filling our stomach with all the goodness of the wholesome meal, it was time to grab a glass of hot milk and call it a day. Haridwar surprised us with its delightful treats and its friendly locals. Do make time for visit to this city and soak in its spiritual and culinary atmosphere. Till the next time keep walking keep exploring.

RATLAM Food Tour - FAMOUS Ratlami Sev + BHUTTE ki Kachori + KELE ka Samosa (& Tikiya)

► Subscribe to Delhi Food Walks:

► More Street Food in Madhya Pradesh:

Historically known as Ratnapiri which translates to as ‘The City of Gems’, Ratlam is situated in the north western part of the Malwa region of Madhya Pradesh. It is referred to as the city of three S i.e. Sev, Sari and Sona (gold). Moreover, it is also a significant railway junction of the Indian Railway. The place has a huge foodie populace hence in this episode we are here to explore its wonderful street food scene. In this journey we are joined our hosts Ratlam Wale and Chirag Rai.

We started with central India’s traditional breakfast dish Poha from a popular joint Saklecha Nashta point. It was fluffy and light on spices. But the toppings of sev, fresh coriander, pomegranate seeds and chopped onions made it a tasty affair.

With the rains making a sudden appearance, we rushed to this busy tea stall named Bajrangi Tea stall to satiate our tea craving. Furthermore, just like Bhopal and most other cities of central India, Ratlam too is a tea loving city. The crowd here was a testimony of its amazing service. The tea was indeed very energizing but their much loved saffron coffee was just decent.

Our next destination was Gordhalal Sev Wala, a fifty year old shop that specializes in the famous Ratlami sev. These gram flour based tiny deep fried snacks were truly appetising and fun. Here in Ratlam it is eaten all the time and with most of the dishes. According to the owner, the climate and the water of Ratlam gives it the distinct character.

Next was the turn of a wholesome Dal Bati and Bafla Thali from the popular Vyas Dal bati. There was crushed Bati and Bafla along with sweet and sour dal, papad and chutney. The platter was delicious and value for money.

After that we tasted a simple and light Sabudana khichdi from Sabudana Bhandar. Like the Poha this too is a preferred breakfast dish across central India. We liked it sweet and sour taste that was quite satisfying.

From there we reached Kalu Mama Samosa shop. Their highlights were the corn samosa, raw banana samosa and mirchi vadas. All of them were distinctly flavoursome. This place is a hot favorite so don’t miss it if you are visiting Ratlam.

While ambling down the street we came to a very interesting shop with the name Madhya Bharat Bar. On inquiring we realised that it used to be a thriving place long back and its origin dates back to Independence. Now it isn’t functional. Here we tasted their fruit beer which okay but not much impressive.

Our next stop was Satish chaat wala whose chaats are a craze among the locals. Here we tried their three popular dishes- one was the aloo tikki chaat, the other was raw banana chaat and finally aloo tikki biscuit. Everything was delectable. It’s another must try place in Ratlam.

From there we went to their relative’s pani puri shop for some delightful panipuris. The owner was such a generous host that he made us taste all the different flavours of pani puris that was available in his shop. They were just brilliant. We also had the palak chaat at this place. We highly recommend this place to all the Pani puri lovers.

After binge eating the pani puris we went to taste another famous hot beverage the kesariya doodh. The thick and luscious milk is was quite pleasing. The locals love to have it after dinner.

We ended our food tour in Ratlam with a tasty paan from Govind paan shop. The day super gratifying and we could cover most of the popular eateries in the city. We are extremely grateful to chirag and Ratnam wale for taking us around and helping us in our exploration.

LUCKNOW Vegetarian Food Tour - Malai Paan + BASKET CHAAT + Matar + MAKHAN MALAI + KALI Gajar HALWA

► Subscribe to Delhi Food Walks:

In our journey to discover some of the tastiest street foods that India has to offer we found ourselves lost amongst the captivating aromas of kebabs, chat, samosa etc. and the royal glory of Uttar Pradesh’s capital Lucknow. Join us on this veg food tour as we take you through the irresistible options out here.

First Stop- Shukla Tea Stall
We began our day with some kadak chai, pakodi and samosa. The tea is thick and strong is truly what they call “malai maar ke”chai. The pakodi is served here only in the mornings, perfectly crispy and super fresh, these fritters are made with chickpea flour, onions and spinach. But we are living for the samosas served here. Honestly the slight sourness in the stuffing that comes from dried mango powder is truly unique to U.P. Even the shape of the samosa is not you run-of-the-mill triangle but a little more round which allows it to have just a little more stuffing.

Second Stop- Bajpayee Kachori Bhandar
The ultimate Khasta is served at this small shop along with chickpea and potato sabzi. The Khasta is stuffed with dals and is super crisp. We also tried the Kachori and Sabzi and a dry potato sabzi which was topped with mint. Each and every dish we tried was delicious!

Third Stop- Ram Asrey
Here we tasted the Malai Gilori or Malai Paan. It's just a layer of thick cream filled with khoya and dry fruits. It is sweet and very decadent.

Fourth Stop- Ram Asrey
This one was established in 1805 serving an amazing array of sweets. Their speciality is the Malai ki Gilori which is made from slow cooking buffalo milk. Another speciality is the Kaali Gajar ka halwa. The process of cooking this halwa is very long but there is another sweet dish which takes about two says to make. Dudhiya is one of the dishes that seems simple but has complex and time consuming method of cooking. Made with milk, clarified butter, sprouted wheat and dry fruits, this sweet was a super nutritious.

Fifth Stop- Netram Ajay Kumar
Serving classics like Kachori, jalebi and gulgule, this place has been in Aminabad since 1854. We got the Kachori Thali here which includes kachori, dry potato sabzi, pumpkin sabzi, raita, tamarind chutney, potato and pea sabzi, jalebi and gulgule. Everything on that plate was supremely delicious.

Sixth Stop- Jagdish Makhan Malai
Known as daulat ki chaat in Delhi, Malaiyo in Banaras and Makhan Malai in Lucknow. This is made from milk and cream and here they add some cardamom, pistachios and saffron. We also tried the Kesariya Doodh which is below the foamy layer of the Makhan Malai.

Seventh Stop- Royal Cafe
Here we ate a number of things. First was the Palak patta chaat which is a spinach leaf dipped in chickpea flour batter and fried then topped with yogurt, tamarind chutney green chilli chutney and chaat masala, it is super crispy and very flavourful. Then qe tried the nimbu matar, tikki and the famous basket chaat. The basket is made from fried potatoes and the chaat on the whole consists of 25 things in it. There's a different flavour in every bite.

Eighth Stop- Shukla Chaat House
Another name for the humble gol gappa, Batashe, is what we tried here. Here they are filled with matar and mint- imli water. Another dish here is Matara which are crisp and soft tikiya topped with coriander, lemon and crushed batashe for crunch.

Ninth Stop- Pandit Raja Ki Mashur Thandai
This shop has been there since 1936. Thandai is basically cold spiced milk. Here the milk is flavoured at least 18 spices which are put in keeping the weather in mind along with dry fruits too.

Tenth Stop- Chaurasiya Paan Bhandar
Final stop had to be for paan but not just any paan, Maghai Paan. This is made from a special leaf which is available only during the winter season. The speciality of this particular leaf is its texture, it just melts in the mouth.
