Haarlem, Netherlands (Holland) travel video

travel videos & photos at: with text, maps & links.
The historic city of Haarlem is one of the most attractive destinations in the Netherlands. We show the main neighborhoods you want to have a look at when you're visiting Haarlem, a real Dutch treat. In the center the market square with the great church towering over, and just below there is a series of pedestrian lanes lined with shops and cafés that are very charming, and there are little side residential lanes here as well. Haarlem is only 15 minutes away from Amsterdam by train, so it makes an easy day-trip, but this small city is so fascinating you might want to spend a night or two to fully enjoy the experience.
Many of these brick buildings date back 400 years to the 17th century when Haarlem was at its peak of prosperity. They were homes and workshops and warehouses of the merchants. Today there are a lot of bars and restaurants and then it becomes a shopping street.
And this leads us right into perhaps the most charming street in Haarlem and maybe the cutest lane in the country.
Kleine Houstraat. You won't get lost here because it's a small district and the streets are rather straight and run at right angles to each other, but there's plenty here to keep you busy for a full day just wandering around. Walk along some of these connecting streets like Anegan, it's almost like a wide shopping mall that joins up three of the other main shopping streets.
You'll find the shoppers and workers are friendly and ready to talk.
There is frequent train service every 10 minutes between Haarlem and Amsterdam. However if you come on day trip you're probably not going to be getting to the ends of some of the shopping lanes and into the interesting little back streets or to the museums. If you spend a night or two you'll have plenty of time.

Haarlem, Netherlands: Herring and Heritage - Rick Steves’ Europe Travel Guide - Travel Bite

Watch the full episode: Haarlem is a “Dutch Masters” kind of town, with plenty of 17th-century architecture. Dodge bikes down narrow lanes to discover some of Haarlem’s gems — pickled herring, masterpieces by Frans Hals, and, at 100 feet high, Holland’s greatest pipe organ. Presenting a tour of the Netherlands
0:00 Introduction ; 03:26 Haarlem; 04:31 Alkmaar; 05:45 Leiden; 06:38 The Hague; 07:48 Delft; 08:54 Rotterdam; 10:11 Utrecht; 11:35 Gouda; 12:22 Maastricht ; 13:43 Conclusion
Starting with a visit to Haarlem, then to Leiden, doing a few day trips out from there. Then to Delft for three more nights and excursions to The Hague, political capital of the nation.
Then to Rotterdam the great modern city of the Netherlands, continuing to Utrecht, a university town with a large historic center and then to Maastricht in the southern part of the country. I'll also be going up to the Alkmaar cheese market which is a lot of fun.
This video is a summary of the trip through the Netherlands. We will be presenting short segments about each city here, but we have 22 movies providing a lot more details about these places so be sure to look for them in our collection.
See the 23 Dutch movies here:
Traveling between cities was so easy because the Netherlands has got perhaps the best train system in Europe. It's phenomenal. The trains are clean, fast, frequent and not expensive. This is a small country, so the cities are relatively close together, you can get from one to the next and 15 or 30 minutes usually. This superb rail service in itself makes a good reason to visit this country, shift for it really does eliminate some of those logistical problems of travel, just getting around. It is so easy with these trains.
Some call it Holland, but the country is The Netherlands. Holland is two provinces in the Netherlands.

Haarlem, Netherlands weekly outdoor food market

travel videos & photos at: with text, maps & links.
It's Saturday morning in the Dutch city of Haarlem, Netherlands and the open market is in full bloom. It's one of the larger and more lively market squares in all of Holland. Market day in a European city is generally a lot of fun. You get a chance to mingle around with the locals then have a look at the produce, and the cheese and the fruits and different clothing items for sale, participating like a resident – and maybe you'll find something good to eat.
It's no surprise this big event is at the central market square right in the middle of town next to the big church.
When traveling it's not always easy to strike up conversations with the locals but on market day everybody is ready to talk, so by all means have some chats with the vendors.
If you don't find anything to eat at the market there are a number of cafés all around the market. There's a beautiful corner bar here – people kicking back watching the parade of people going by, having a drink or having a meal. It's a perfect spot for a break before plunging back into the market.
The buildings all around the market square are beautiful and historic. Most of them date back to the 1600s. You've got the old meat market, you've got the weighing house, the City Hall, and the big church, the Grote Kerk, there is an archaeology museum and some former residences of the nobles.
Well you can see how much fun this market is but you've got to be here on a Saturday to catch all of this action. So if you can possibly arrange your schedule, if you're staying in Amsterdam and you're around on a weekend, by all means come on over to Haarlem and have a walk around the market and then see the rest of town.
We have more movies about Haarlem so be sure to have a look at our YouTube channel and subscribe so you can be notified about all of our recent uploads. We've also got a series of films about the Netherlands covering many of the highlights of this beautiful country, stay tuned.

Haarlem 4K The Netherlands ????????

Enjoy my virtiual walk in Haarlem 4K The Netherlands !

Haarlem Info:
For an enjoyable day out at the shops, relaxing, taking in the culture or dining out, Haarlem is the ideal city. It is a lovely place to spend time, with its beautiful station, the canals, buildings and atmospheric shopping streets. Haarlem attracts many tourists and is just a short distance from the seaside resorts of Zandvoort and Bloemendaal. With a total of 19 inner courtyards, Haarlem certainly deserves the title of Hofjesstad van Nederland, the Inner Courtyard City of the Netherlands.
There are also numerous fun activities for the little ones to do in Haarlem.

The location and surrounding area of Haarlem
Haarlem has an excellent location - offering both connections to the motorways for Alkmaar, Amsterdam and Schiphol Amsterdam Airport, as well as the tranquillity of the beaches and dunes.

Places to visit in Haarlem
Haarlem city centre is surrounded by canals. Right in the centre is the Grote Markt market square with its beautiful buildings, such as the Town Hall, the Vleeshal former meat-hall and the St. Bavokerk church.
The three main shopping streets, Barteljorisstraat, the Grote Houtstraat and the Zijlstraat are very well-known to Dutch people, because they can also be found on the Monopoly game board. They are definitely worth a visit. To the east of the city is the district of Spaarnwouderbuurt, where Haarlem’s only remaining city gate is to be found. While in the district, do not forget to visit the national monument De Koepelgevangenis panopticon and the De Adriaan windmill.
To cross the Spaarne river there are two monumental swing bridges that connect the banks to each other, the Gravestenenbrug and the modern Lange Brug, both ideal locations for taking photographs.

A seemingly endless sea of blossoms - not far from the beach and the sea: in spring, the landscape between Haarlem and The Hague resembles a huge, colorful painting. And right in the middle is the Keukenhof, one of the largest flower parks in the world. On her journey through southern Holland, Andrea Grießmann also stopped in Leiden, in the porcelain town of Delft, she met the painters Rembrandt and Jan Vermeer, in The Hague she followed the traces of the royal family and saw the modern and at the same time old Seaside resort Scheveningen.

Walking in Haarlem, The Netherlands [4K] | Exploring Haarlem City Center

Haarlem is a city and municipality in the Netherlands. It is the capital of the province of North Holland.

Haarlem is a charming city featuring great culture, cafés, shops and restaurants. As well as being home to some of the Netherlands’ best museums and world-famous art, it is regularly voted as one of the country's best cities for shopping. There’s plenty to keep you entertained – including river cruises, weekly markets and more.

With its ancient buildings, cobbled streets and winding waterways, the medieval city of Haarlem is one of the most photogenic destinations in the Netherlands. Easily reachable by train, just 15 minutes from Amsterdam Central Station. Haarlem beats with its own vibrant pulse, overflowing with a rich history, epoch-spanning architecture and a thriving cultural scene all of its own.

TRAVEL VIDEO OF HAARLEM NETHERLAND

Haarlem is located on the river Spaarne, about 20km west of Amsterdam. It has been the centre of the tulip bulb-growing district for centuries, for which it bears the nickname bloemenstad (flower city). This charming city embodies the Dutch word “gezellig”, with its many canals, restaurants with terraces, quirky boutique shops, windmills, and medieval architecture.

Haarlem’s history dates back to pre-medieval times, however, it was on November 23, 1245, that Count Willem II granted Haarlem city status (stadsrechten). In 1270, a defensive wall was built around the city to keep it safe from sieges from the surrounding area of Kennemerland. Haarlem prospered and in the 14th century, the city was the second-largest city in historical Holland. At the end of this century, a 16.5-meter high wall and a 15-meter wide canal were built to improve the city’s defenses.

The Spanish army besieged Haarlem on December 11, 1572. The city managed to stand against the whole Spanish army for seven months but ultimately had to surrender. Many defenders were slaughtered, and properties were plundered.

Teylers Museum was the first museum in the Netherlands. Its collection includes art, fossils and minerals, scientific instruments, and coins. The building itself is a work of art as well, the Oval Room will have you in awe. Another museum worth mentioning is the Frans Hals museum, which houses about a dozen paintings by Dutch master Frans Hals, as well as works by other renowned Golden Age artists, including Jacob van Ruisdael and Jan Steen.

This street has won the honorary title “Best Shopping Street of the Netherlands” twice already. It is also part of the “Gouden Straatjes”, or the Golden Streets of Haarlem. The other six are: Schagchelstraat, Warmoesstraat, Gierstraat, Koningsstraat, Zijlstraat and Anegang. Most major shopping chains are located on the street of De Grote Houtstraat.
