How Expensive is Costa Rica? | Travel Budget for 2 Weeks
I was in Costa Rica a bit over two weeks as a solo traveller. Just how much did that cost? In this video I go through the complete cost of the entire trip.
I divided the budget into five sections:
- Getting to Costa Rica (flights, ESTA, tests)
- Accommodations (hotels and hostels)
- Activities (everything from canyoning to rain forest hikes and diving)
- Transportation inside Costa Rica (shared shuttles, airplane, taxis, etc)
- Eating and drinking (not the biggest expense but not insignificant either)
I also list a total summary of the entire trip. How much was the total in the end? Well, you'll just have to watch the video to see, right? But let's just say that my wallet was whimpering a bit.
If you want to get practical travel budget information about visiting Costa Rica, this is the video for you. But you can also get hints about places to visit, activities to do, and hotels you may want to visit.
Aside from the five categories listed, I also added an Extra section to my travel budget. That's because of a flight delay which caused an extra overnight at Miami, and re-booking a lot of transports at an additional cost. I've filed for compensation from Finnair, but they are - of course - ignoring it completely (boo! boo!). Just so you know.

Is Costa Rica Expensive? | How Much We Spent In 1 Week In Costa Rica
Is Costa Rica expensive? Here is a breakdown of EXACTLY what we spent during our first week in Costa Rica, so you can decide for yourself!
We spent this week in Montezuma with a group of 6 friends, but these prices reflect the cost per person.
• $19 on Transportation
• $52 on groceries (we cooked many meals in!)
• $120 on eating out (including alcohol and 1 fancier dinner)
• $77 on a Day Trip to Isla Tortuga (this included the boat ride, snorkel, drinks, and lunch - it was a full day tour!)
• $268 on accommodation (we rented a house on a hotel property and split the cost between 6 people)
TOTAL: $568
