Think back 10 years ago. Had you heard of Cape Verde? Not quite African and not quite Portuguese, a vibrant mix of both worlds. The islands of Cape Verde are as beautiful as they are mysterious. It was the transatlantic slave trades that put these islands on the map and ten years ago, TUI put them on the tourist trail and the industry boomed. It's no surprise but the constant beat of traditional music, turquoise seas, sandy beaches, world-class surf and surreal lunar landscapes. I've been given the opportunity to travel 2,700 miles across the Atlantic to visit Sal, an island steeped in history and natural wonders, where suddenly there are more tourists than locals. I want to engage with its people, absorb its unique culture and at this most critical time in our planet's history, dig deeper into the reality of tourism and learn how we as tourists can improve the way we travel to ensure a sustainable future for an industry we all love. We've been guided along the way by two amazing charities; the TUI Care Foundation and the Travel Foundation who work closely with local businesses and hotels. This trip was to become one of the biggest eyeopeners of my travels to date. So let's go back to the beginning. At Holiday Extras we believe in making simple choices to improve the way we travel, to find solutions that benefit the environment and lessen our negative impact on a destination so our journey began in an airport lounge at Gatwick, ideal if you're trying to avoid buying plastic whilst filling up on delicious food before your flight. We chose to fly direct to Sal with TUI Airways, the world's most carbon efficient airline. And upon landing we were met by our prefect transfer driver who took us straight to our greener hotel on the southwest coast of the island. So we're starting our day having breakfast with a view. It kind of reminds me of what the moon would look like. It's very rocky but that view is just gorgeous and we're not wasting any time, we're starting today with an island tour and this is with the company called Explore CV, and I'm really looking forward to seeing what today has an offer. Booking an excursion on a trip can be the highlight of any holiday but we want to emphasize the importance of finding a responsible tour company. Explore Cape Verde were recommended to us by the Travel Foundation for being passionate about the island's wildlife, whilst providing eco-conscious excursions. We booked on an island tour and our tour guide Jordi was a knowledgeable marine biologist. The tour started in the coastal town of Santa Maria at the fishing pier which is the soul of the island. Jordi showed us around and explained that the fisherman returned around 11:00 a.m. every morning to their wives who are waiting at the pier ready to sell the catch. If it's the locals fisherman's it is a sustainable fishing we also sell the rights for the European Union to fish here in Cape Verdean waters. Cape Verde got its independence in 1975. As a former Portuguese colony, they absorbed the Portuguese influence and their blood. Mixed with the Africans who settled here, essentially created their own race Creole. It's like cultural to jump from the pier. If you come here and you didn't jump you cannot say that you've been in Sal. The no stress lifestyle here it seems the whole time. Next up we visited a natural reef, a popular feeding area for lemon sharks and a place for tourists to safely see them in the wild. You can rent water shoes to protect your feet from the rocks and carefully wade in to watch them hunt. Jordi's care and consideration for the sharks was very clear, insisting we keep a fair distance as not to disturb them. Other guides let their groups go as far as they wanted, some even chased the curious parts which reminded me of the importance of booking with a responsible company.

Cape Verde Travel Guide - An African Adventure

Cape Verde Travel Guide - An African Adventure

Cape Verde is a country in West Africa. It comprises a group of islands of the Atlantic Ocean, west of Senegal. It is part of the region of Islands collectively known as Macaronesia. Cape Verde has won a positive reputation in promoting what is considered the most stable democracy in Africa, a standard of living higher than most African nations, and one of the most politically liberal nations on the continent, and in the world.

Jutting up from the Atlantic, some 500km west of Senegal, this stunning island chain has a captivating blend of mountains, beaches and peaceful seaside villages. On Santo Antão, craggy peaks hide piercing green valleys of flowers and sugar cane, ideal for epic hikes. São Vicente is home to the cultural capital of the islands, Mindelo, which throbs with bars and music clubs. On Sal and Maio, undulating windswept dunes merge with indigo-blue seas on unspoilt beaches of powdery white sand. Meanwhile, far-flung Fogo and Brava in the southwest offer their own enchantments, from surreal volcanic landscapes, to sparkling bays framed by towering peaks. Throw in the constant beat of music that Cabo Verde is famed for and the renowned morabeza (Creole for hospitality) of its people and you’ll see why many have come – and never left.

Cape Verde’s climate is tropical, with a warm, dry summer. As a part of the greater Sahel region of Africa precipitation is meager and falls between the months of June to February, peaking in September. Some islands see almost no rain, these are Sal, Boa Vista and Maio; these are arid. The islands with the most rain fall are Santiago, Fogo and Santo Antao, but are nonetheless semi-arid.

Cape Verde is formed by 10 main islands and about 8 islets. The main islands are :

Santo Antão
Great hiking.

São Vicente
With the cultural capital of Mindelo.

Santa Luzia
Santa Luzia is uninhabited but can be visited as a day trip from São Vicente.

São Nicolau
Rural mountainous island based on agriculture. A quiet and relaxed get away.

Sal
Has great beaches, water sports and resorts aplenty.

Boa Vista
Even nicer beaches. Great scuba diving

Maio
Even more nice beaches.

Santiago Island
The first island settled in Cape Verde. It holds the current capital Praia, the original capital Cidade Velha, and the bulk of the nation's population.

Fogo
A spectacular volcano island which erupted as recently as November 2014.

Brava
A small island only accessible by boat and is a great place to get away from it all.

There are plenty of hotels and guest houses throughout the archipelago. Though the largest hotels are based on the islands of Sal (Riu Funana and Garopa hotels--1000 rooms combined), and Boa Vista (Riu Touareg--881 rooms). Cape Verde has fantastic fresh seafood. Tuna is common, as is Wahoo - a white fleshed fish with similar texture.

There are ferry services between the islands. Depending on the distance between the islands you are going from and to, flying can be significantly shorter but also significantly more expensive.

A lot to see in Cape Verde such as :

Pico do Fogo
Deserto de Viana
Monte Verde, Cape Verde
Praia da Atalanta
Sotavento Islands

Serra da Malagueta
Chaves Beach
Praia de Santa Mónica

Hilton Cabo Verde Sal Resort - December 2017

We spent our December 2017 vacation at the Hilton Cabo Verde Sal Resort. Cape Verde is a relatively new tourist destination compared to the Canary or Mediterranean islands. I'd say it's a mix between the forementioned islands and Africa. The Hilton on the island of Sal had only been open a month or so before our stay, there was still some small construction going on and the staff were in progress of being trained. None of that really bothered us that much as there weren't that many tourists clogging up the place at the time. This video shows the common areas, beach, rooms and restaurants, including the Bounty beach restaurant. If You'd like guaranteed good weather on Your next vacation I highly recommend Cape Verde and the Hilton. PS! The island is small and You can experience all touristy stuff in one day. The rest of the time You can best spend by the pool or on the beach.

30 Things to do in Cape Town, South Africa Travel Guide Video Transcript:

Today we’re taking you around one of our favourite cities: Cape Town, South Africa.

We first visited Cape Town in 2015 as the final stop on a monthlong trip across South Africa. However, by the time we arrived, we only had a couple of days to spare and the weather was less than ideal, so we didn’t get to see very much.

We knew we had to return to do the city justice and also film a proper Cape Town travel guide for you guys. This time around, we gave ourselves a full week to spare.

Our days were packed with sightseeing, and with visits to restaurants, chocolate shops, wineries and gin distilleries, so without further delay, let us show you 30 things do in Cape Town, South Africa.

And that’s a wrap for our week in Cape Town, South Africa. We hope you enjoyed following along and that this guide gave you a few ideas of things to see, do and eat in Cape Town. As always, if you have any other suggestions for fellow travellers, feel free to share those in the comments below. In the meantime, wishing you happy travels and see you next time!

Going Around Maio Island Safari Style | Sailing Galopin in Cabo Verde | Winded Voyage S5 | Episode 5

Maio, a new island and a new home for us. We go around Maio Island by foot and discover great street food. Then we are taken along with a local guide named Maurizio in his classic Land Rover. We're going around Maio Island safari style. And finally Peter rents a car and Jen and Aleck rent off-road quads and we go off the beaten paths. Due to Covid, there are hardly any tourists, and we have amazing spots like beaches and dunes all to ourselves. It's the best of the quiet island. Sailing Galopin in Cabo Verde Africa.

CAPE BRETON Travel Guide ???? | Things to do in Cape Breton, NOVA SCOTIA, Canada ????????

Hello and greetings from Cape Breton, Nova Scotia where in this travel guide we plan to highlight some of the top things to do for visitors! We recently spent a week road-tripping the island and what an adventure that was! This was our fourth summer exploring Nova Scotia, and this time around we focused on southern Cape Breton, specifically the area between St. Peter’s and Port Hastings. Here is our Cape Breton Travel Guide covering some fascinating things to do in Nova Scotia, Canada.

I think this is a really interesting area to visit because it is very accessible. Port Hastings is the first town you hit if you’re crossing via the Canso Causeway (the only land access point to the island!), so it’s a logical starting point, and it makes a lot of sense for travellers who want to see a bit of Cape Breton without having to drive too far.

We spent our week in southern Cape Breton doing an iconic sail from lake to sea, feasting on seafood at every meal, tackling different hiking trails, and enjoying the warm hospitality the island is known for.

So hit that subscribe button and join us as we explore Cape Breton, Nova Scotia!

Places we visited in southern Cape Breton:

St Peter’s Canal Sailing Tour
The Island Nest
LeNoir Forge
Lennox Passage Provincial Park
The Groundswell Inn
Battery Provincial Park
St Peter’s Coastal Trail
Lockmaster’s Pub
Miller's
Port Hawkesbury Community Trails
The Country Kitchen
Celtic Shores Coastal Trail
Canso Causeway
The Cove
Dundee Resort and Golf Club
MacRae’s Dining Room

The Comoros - East Africa's Island Paradise

I spent ten days exploring the Comoros islands in East Africa (next to Madagascar), splitting my time between Grande Comore and Mohéli. On Grande Comore I visited Moroni, the beaches of the north, Lac Salé, and Chindini.

On Moheli I stayed at Laka Lodge in Nioumachoua, where I swam, snorkled with humpback whales and turtles, and enjoyed Moheli's perfect beaches. A true paradise!

We Got KICKED OUT of our RV Park | Fulltime RV Living | The Downside to Fulltime RV Life

Think there's NO DRAMA in RV life? Think again! Our video highlights what happens when you choose the wrong campground to spend a week relaxing and unwinding! While we do give some consideration to user reviews, we don't always mark a campground off our list just because of a handful of poor reviews! Unfortunately, we paid the price this time and will now consider ALL reviews that pertain to power shortages and general upkeep! Let our mistake save you the drama of dealing with a park manager that thinks your big rig is taking all the power out of their park. One highlight that came from this huge inconvenience, is that our next campground, just outside of Glacier National Park, was able to accommodate us four days early! Thanks to getting kicked out, we got to see Glacier three times instead of just once, which we originally had planned! Oh, and our new campground had plenty of electricity for ALL of the rigs in their campground and was well kept!

Cape Verde - Boa Vista - October 2017

One of the first videos i ever did since leaving the Media scene in 2012. I never knew if i should ever put it onto YouTube because i obviously don't own the music! Thought what the heck! Why not! Luckily it's not been blocked!

This was filmed on a Nokia Lumia 600 i think! Also grabbed it from my Facebook by recording the screen as i do not have the original file anymore so the quality is not so good! Anyways, a Lumia 600... Basically... it was a real challenge! And not much memory on the phone either. I had to keep on flicking through the footage that i had and was very selective. A lot of footage was simply deleted to make space for other things. All apps were deleted from the phone too. It was an epic challenge just to get this amount of video.

I had to plan the story of the movie by writing on their version of paper in a notebook with a pencil! (Brown, cardboard paper!) They do not have the facilities or a lot of things on the island. Paper and basic education equipment is one of these things they lack. They also struggle to grow their own food and what they do grow is not good enough for the hotels, so all that food is imported from Spain. Their biggest export is Salt. Which is great and we did manage to get a free bag on a trip. We still have it to this day and it is amazing on a roast dinner!

This video was of me and my Wife on Holiday in October 2017 in Cape Verde. Although there's no real footage of us. (This was before we were married!) And also before i became a Branch Manager! I had to do the interview the day after i returned from this trip! To put it bluntly, this was the best holiday we had ever been on together and we are hoping to go back in the near future! We hear a lot has changed!

Although the weather at this time of year, which was October, is the hottest for the year in Cape Verde. I was burnt pretty badly as you can see from my feet half way through the video!

The trips we did were the Northern and Southern island trips which are half a day each.

We also saw the Sea Turtles on an evening excursion, however no footage was allowed due to it being a nature reserve and because it was dark, you could not see anything when off roading in the sand dunes due to a lack of light. We saw a huge Turtle lay eggs (looked like the Alien Queen laying eggs in Aliens) and my Wife was lucky enough to hold a baby turtle between her finger and thumb (Mainly because she was the most well behaved female on the trip and listened to everything the guides were telling us as others had conversations between themselves! TIP if you want to go and actually hold a baby Sea Turtle! Pay Attention to what is being said, also wear dark clothing!)

It just stayed there flapping its flippers. Eventually it was released into the ocean and named after my Wife and every other female on the trip. We could track it but unfortunately after checking a few months later i believe it has been eaten by something... :-( I have not told my Wife this...

Music by:

Granger Smith - Backroad Song
The Shires - All Over Again (We ended up walking down the aisle together to this song after we had just got married!)

I do not own the content of the music.
